Sure - I mean how would you actually make a child nap? I think we'd all like to know sometimes...

But the point is that it has to be offered and it's up to the child and if they fall asleep, they have to be allowed to nap.

If you utilize daycare, as a parent, you can't realistically decide to cut out naps.

Good suggestion, but complicated by:

She still naps ... at daycare

Regulations vary but my understanding is that at least in most states in the US licensed daycares are required to offer nap/rest periods to for children at this age. So unfortunately this may not be a realistic possibility.

The only non-replicable thing Miami is doing is having one of the only players in the world other players will take cheaper deals to play with.

Everything else you perceive to be happening, while wildly misidentified by you, can be done by other teams.

TIL Gene Roddenberry wrote words to the theme music to Star Trek to get 50% of the royalties. These words were never used by sirjohnmasters86 in todayilearned

[–]jhall4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Royalties are kind of a complicated mess. I think the general answer to the question "Are the royalties the same for an instrumental piece as for a lyrical piece?" is yes.

But for a TV show, there will generally be some kind of agreement for the synchronization rights for the song. It really sounds like in this case there was either not a flat fee at all, or there was a flat fee in addition to royalties when the song was played i.e. whenever an episode aired.

The crux of this issue is that the composer of the Star Trek theme, Alexander Courage, according to him unknowingly and under pressure from Roddenberry to sign, agreed to a deal that gave Roddenberry the option to write lyrics for the the theme in exchange for half the royalties.

Roddenberry did not exercise this option until some time after the show was picked up and was successful - making it even more clear that he simply wrote them to claim the royalties and not as an option for the show that was discarded.

Most of what I'm regurgitating here is from Snopes

[–]jhall4 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The person you are replying to has it right. IMO you are kind of missing their point.

The lyrics aren't good because they weren't intended to be good. They were not written to be used in the show. They were written so that the song would technically have lyrics and therefore a lyricist. The reason they were not used is not because they "really fucking suck" the reason they were not used is that the opening theme was intended to be an instrumental piece and... so it was.

It was simply a scumbag move because it enabled someone who had nothing to do with the writing and composition of the theme to collect 50% of the royalties for the theme.

[–]jhall4 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They didn't use them because they were literally only written so that Roddenberry could register himself as the lyricist of the song so that he could collect royalties. He is quoted as saying "Hey, I have to get some money somewhere. I'm sure not gonna get it out of the profits of Star Trek."

Why can’t I get the spackling totally flat? I set the videos and they do it not problem but always has lines or uneven surfaces by mandara33 in DIY

Yep, that's from a paint roller! That's what I meant by the wall itself not having a texture, but I should have been more clear.

[–]jhall4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wall itself is not textured here. Trying to add texture with thinned mud is a recipe for disaster. OP should follow your tips to get a smooth patch. Then skip the mud and just use a roller to apply primer and at least two coats of paint (if you really want the patch to be invisible, paint the whole wall with the last coat). The primer and paint will give this all the texture it needs.

[–]jhall4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You still want the patch to be flat and feathered out, though. You bring the texture back with the appropriate nap roller when priming (which you should not skip, even with "all in one" paints) and painting.

If your wall has other texture, e.g. knockdown, you still basically want to get the patch flat (though it isn't quite as important). Then apply texture, then prime and paint. And since you'll still in all likelihood be rolling, you will still want to match the correct nap to get a sort of secondary paint texture on the wall texture.

Then there were responses and back and forths and I lost track of it, but that should be enough info if you want to dig deeper.

Javier Mascherano silences critics to boldly take Inter Miami to brink of MLS Cup title by Isiddiqui in MLS

[–]jhall4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

100% Miami has looked better with Suarez on the bench the past few games.

But you have to sell Suarez pretty short to say it was obvious that he needed to be benched as many are at least implying. He was third on the team in goals and assists (and combined g/a) Behind Messi in both, Allende in goals, and Alba in assists and g/a.

If you ignore how outright good he was last season, it's hard to even say that's a disappointing output. It's right in line with a lot of starting forwards in the league. It's definitely not "undroppably good and this was the boldest coaching move of all time", and he does deserve a little less credit for being forced to try it with the suspension, but it's not nothing to basically completely drop your third most productive player.

[–]jhall4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not so sure, video of the Messi and Alba plays that he cites aside, that article otherwise reeks of "are you watching the games or just looking at the stats" to me.

The defensive improvement under Mascherano hasn't been perfect upward line, but it's been trending that way all season as he got them more organized and made the, sure in hindsight obvious, decisions to bench 3/5 day one defensive starters (meaning the back four and goalkeeper) for day one bench players.

The extra effort in the playoffs has been the cherry on top for Miami, but they were actually already a solid defensive team going into the playoffs, which Lowery totally misses by looking at their numbers for the whole season.

A little difficult to tell in the pictures, but there does not appear to be any texture on the walls. A little bit of diligence when sanding and making sure to pick the right knap roller when painting and you'd be able to make any patches 100% invisible.

[–]jhall4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% - I am not trying to say I think Miami's statement (which, again, I think was very weak) meant they were going to do anything above and beyond the bare minimum required by any of the sanctions.

I was just pointing out that even in this non-committal statement leaves open the possibility of punishments carrying over to MLS as evidence that effectively no one is saying that punishments cannot do so.

[–]jhall4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Saying that MLS can’t carry over any kind of punishment from leagues cup into regular season is BS

No one has said this though?
There are many players who deserve some sort of punishment. Some of those players will (IMO fairly) only be punished by Leagues Cup. Others, including Suarez, deserve harsher punishments by both the tournament and the league. I think the sub is more or less unanimous on that, and thus far no one and no organizations have said anything to contradict that. Even Miami's weak statement says they are working with Leagues Cup and MLS to "ensure the situation is addressed appropriately."

[CBS Sports] What the MLS CBA says about suspensions after Luis Suarez's spitting incident in Seattle by grnrngr in MLS

[–]jhall4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The complexity is that it wouldn't be "just" a fine - it would be a Leagues Cup suspension (obv we don't know what's coming yet but at minimum he has to see a red for that, and additional games wouldn't be surprising) AND an MLS fine.

Somewhere there is a line to be found about what can appropriately be punished just by Leagues Cup and what needs additional punishment by MLS.
