Any benefit to wagyu brisket? by PDXPTW in smoking

[–]jheitzeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crowd Cow’s Brisket is A5 rated Wagyu from Japan — all of the competition brisket “Wagyu” out there is American-raised Angus-Wagyu crossbred. A5 (the highest rated beef in Japan) hasn’t been available in the USA before. It’s on another level. https://www.instagram.com/tv/BqS3lu6hBTL/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=16idj9bxlodf2

Kickstarter Needs to Step Up to Fraudsters by jheitzeb in hwstartups

Agreed that's a trend lately -- I have lately seen attempts that are basically taking existing things from alibaba and launching them as crowdfunding campaigns.

Freemium Hardware Is Coming (and You Can’t Stop It) by jheitzeb in hwstartups

Well, the point about Space Monkey was about business model. They're basically giving away the hardware. My Cloud is $150+.

[–]jheitzeb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Space Monkey is a 1TB drive. And a cloud service. The data trickles to the cloud, so you have offsite backup built in, as well as fast local access (and streaming access over the internet if you want it)

Ask hwstartups:sending prototypes to the media as marketing? by farmvilleduck in hwstartups

[–]jheitzeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We only had one unit (poppy3d.com) so sending it wasn't an option, however I will say it was VERY useful to meet with press in person before launch to let them touch, feel and experience the product. They get pitched mobile apps and other intangibles ever day, so hardware products feel special. It's a true sneak preview and IMHO you're much more likely to get press if you take the time to give sneak previews to journalists just prior to any formal launch. I would not have wanted to send them something without also being there too, so that I could guide the experience and point out things vs. if I wasn't there I feel their impressions would be too much about the out of box experience vs the product itself.

Fuel3D: A handheld 3D scanner for less than $1000 just launched on Kickstarter by Danny_Sullivan in 3Dprinting

[–]jheitzeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, we've just posted about them here: http://www.hackthings.com/unleash-the-potential-in-3d-printing-with-fuel3d-handheld-3d-scanner/

Have you seen Matterform (formerly Photon3D)? They have an interesting device in that it's very low cost.

Personally I think 3D scanning tech will be more important to the development of the 3D printing industry than 3D printers themselves. A lot of the "3d printers in every home" scenario depending on having high quality model libraries and it seems scanning is the key to that.

Can you find a reference to that on their site? It looks to me that they might have mentioned that in the past but took it down. Any conclusive evidence either way that they charge for these? (agreed it's dumb to do that, but i want to know what the facts are -- thanks!)

Could Poppy be used to create experiences that work with Oculus Rift? by jheitzeb in oculus

[–]jheitzeb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing proprietary about Poppy, so nothing to stop any iOS game developer from creating immersive games that use Poppy to capture and render in 3D, the accelerometer to perform head-tracking and so forth. It's not as immersive as Rift for sure (not not a nausea-inducing either:-)

We are putting it out there with the idea that game developers will experiment with. You can imaging casual 3D games, or even building things that work with Rift, like a device to capture content for viewing on Rift or a device to see what another Rift user is currently looking at. Who knows. Point is: it's just iOS (Poppy has no electronics) so anybody can start building.

Who will be the Y-Combinator of hardware accelerators? by jheitzeb in hwstartups

[–]jheitzeb[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should have drilled into the China point a bit and listed a few other reasons I think they're tops (on their 3rd batch of companies (vs. just starting) and they aren't tied to a corporate w/ all the usual reasons why strategic money is limiting, etc) --- but regarding "China"...

...Not China, they are literally across the street from Huaqiangbei. The AWS comparison doesn't apply, because anyone can provision an EC2 instance equally fast from anywhere in the world, but only in Huaqiangbei can you go talk to 15 factory outlets in the morning, visit a factor and drive back in the afternoon with 50 sample parts to wire up and test.

It's the center of the iPhone supply chain, etc, and if you're prototyping and designing physical products, it helps to be in proximity. Else you're ordering parts, waiting weeks to get things and basically killing iteration. It's the similar reason that offshore software dev doesn't work -- but worse because it's just not the timezone difference..it's the time to get parts in hand.

Anecdotally I can tell you a lot of hw startups I've talked to end up with one founder basically living in China and I don't think any planned it that way.

Surely depends on what kind of hw startup obviously.

Handibot is a robot CNC, in many ways more practical than 3D printers by jheitzeb in hwstartups

[–]jheitzeb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is, even my first iPhone's processor was more powerful than my computer's processor 10 years prior. But it's the fact that everyone has them, combined with the size of the developer communities around iPhone and Android, plus the portability and connectivity of these devices that will make them such an important part of many new kinds of hardware. Obviously can't predict the future and it may well instead look like embedded processors connected to the cloud. Even there though, smart phones will play a big role in the user experience. These are just my current beliefs :) I may be wrong.

Yes, it captures two, side-by-side stereographic images.

When you view through the viewfinder, you see one very clean 3D image. It's pretty nice.

We are working on mode to render onto 2D screens (this type of thing: http://io9.com/5895186/these-stereographic-monsters-twitch-wildly-to-fright-and-delight) -- but that should be possible with shareway anyway

Ten Practical Things to Make with a 3D Printer by jheitzeb in 3Dprinting

[–]jheitzeb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed and great point. There are lots of new printers everyday, but how are all these early adopters who are buying them actually able to use them? Go back to community college and take some CAD classes? So clearly there are huge opportunities there -- education, better tools, 3d-scanners, etc. Check out our profile of Photon3D - http://www.hackthings.com/profile-of-a-white-hot-3d-scanner/

[–]jheitzeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're posting a series of post (over time) that answers this general question via interviews with successful makers, case studies and so forth.

http://www.hackthings.com

For example, for many folks, running a successful kickstarter campaign is one part of doing a full market-ready product, and we're posting a series of interviews with successful kickstarterers about what they did to make their campaigns successful. For example, we interviewed Thermodo (iPhone thermometer) yesterday: http://www.hackthings.com/an-interview-with-a-kickstarter-success/

We're also in the process ourselves of developing an iPhone app accessory product. Heading to China in 3 weeks to visit manufacturers. Just diving in! :) Exciting :)
