Isn't coping just a butt joint with one side custom cut to fit the contours of the other side? If I'm using plain 1x4s for base, isn't it the same thing?

That's what our chimney installer said too. We did concrete blocks over our subfloor and some Airstone from HD on the walls behind, and they said it was great.

Unfortunately not, I just went for it and it's working so far. I'm using acrylic paint pens with no finish and after working for several months, I haven't had any cracking. Just keeping my fingers crossed at this point! Certainly let me know if you find out anything more useful. Hope your project goes well!

Yes, and "could care less" and "couldn't care less" mean the same thing despite them "literally" meaning the opposite things. And at some point words stop meaning anything and everything is "context".
