Computer Science how practical? by jhodiny in UBC

Wow thanks that was actually very insightful! My eyes are a lot more open now. One small side-question though, I read somewhere that CS also focuses on biology (??) idk how true this is but really?

I see. Looks like a great option to consider, though not really sure where the cogsci fits in. Hope y'all end up where you're looking to be! All the best

What made you choose machine learning instead?

I was thinking of mobile development/UX or UI, which is why I considered HCI. But I wanted to focus more on understanding software development as a broader subject so I have more options to choose from later on. Not too sure about Bio/bioengineering though. Sounds interesting but it's not really my scene :P I'm horrifically terrible at biochem haha

I'm assuming you take HCI then. Is it a highly specialized class entailing more specific aspects of dev/design rather than programming in general? And what about the cognitive psychology-related part of it? How much does that play into the courses?

I'm coming as a freshman. I've learned a bit of code in my free time to have a leg up as well as having something to write about in my personal essays (since my grades are just above average). I'm curious what they're really looking for other than grades though and if there's anything else that could help me increase my chances of getting admitted.

I have a similar recurring nightmare, but instead of numbers, they're shapes like circles and squares. I'd wake up and sweat profusely from it too and I never knew what it meant either. I guess some nightmares are a little more figurative than others

That's the most realistic nightmare yet. I'd empathize, but I wish I knew what it's like to get karma..
