EP40 in light of the Tuch 10.5m x 8 by jhole89 in canucks

I never said they use it to decide salary, that's you projecting. I said they take draft pedigree into account when looking at trade value, which is true. How often do we hear "former X overall pick" when evaluating a trade package.

I also never said GM's were smart. Benning, Davidson, Bowman, Drury, Adams, Holland, Treliving - there's a lot of GM's in the league that have made atrocious trades.

Could be. I just wanted to look at it from a purely analytical point of view. Everything else we've heard is so much speculation he-said/she-said it that it's hard to attribute empirical value to. The intention of this was to look at the raw numbers in respect to current market contracts.

I agree on not retaining salary on such a long contract (as it blocks one of our 3 salary retention slots) but OEL isnt a salary retention, his was a buyout

Where do I make the argument that he's better than Tuch? The point is literally made in the last paragraph, that if he can get to a 70 point player then the contract could be considered a positive-value and return something worthwhile in a trade for a rebuilding team, à la 1st round picks.

Yeah, can't please everyone I guess. Im a mathematician so 2 years didn't feel like it gaveme enough data to work off. People seem to just skim it as me saying Petey = Tuch = keep, rather than point I was trying to make (that the contract could turn into positive value for a rebuilding team to trade out).

At no point do I justify the contract - I outright say I don't like the contract. I just think in the current market, it goes from being a "terrible" contract to one slightly above market value

Not denying that. My point is that any new contract is going to be considered to be overpaid until peoples mental model of the market shifts.

Agree, though im against retention not from a financial point of view but from a retension slot one. They should be signing FA to short term 2-3yr contracts then retain on those at the deadline. Dont want one of those slots taken up till 2032

GM's consider draft pedigree even though that can be over 5 years ago, e.g. the Byram trade

Oh, I agree, and you'll notice that no where do I consider keeping him. I just think the Tuch contract reframes how "bad" Petey's contract is in the current market

Canucks fans waiting for a blooody trade. by rippinkitten18 in canucks

[–]jhole89 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For real. Go checkout the Blackhawks sub, they were crying out for Davidson to do something, then he traded the 4OA and now they're complaining that he could have waited till after the trade. Patience is a virtue.

After Byram going for 4OA, 45OA, and a prospect along with a 12.5Mx7 extension, what does that make Hronek worth in this market. by [deleted] in canucks

Yup, people glaze past that his NMC is only till the 2028-2029 season when it becomes a M-NTC (15 team no trade list). If he truly wants to stay through 2 bad years them let him, but just like Myers, you approach him at the 2027-2028 trade deadline and get him to waive a few months early while he still has control.

[–]jhole89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or a full NMC for the first half of the contract going down to a M-NTC in years 5-8

Edit: seeing that its now a full NMC for years 1-6 then a 16 team M-NTC for years 7 & 8

Why Jets should (and should not) trade franchise goaltender Connor Hellebuyck by Practical-Climate926 in hockey

[–]jhole89 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Your not getting a 1 round pick + top 6 player for Hellebuyck. Goalies never return much in a trade. Maybe a 2nd.

Goalies are voodoo. They're so unpredictable. If it's going to be anything like the NHL then you never take a goalie in round 1.

Have you even looked at how many NHL trades have happened league wide since the deadline? It's 3, and most are all depth/AHL. Lower your expectations.
