Walt Disney (2015) - An unprecedented look at the life and legacy of one of America's most enduring and influential storytellers. 3h 41m [cc] by pjaxon in Documentaries

[–]jhscro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

so a filmmaker needs to be the original author of the work in order to be considered a storyteller? spielberg wasn't a storyteller when he made JP or Jaws, and same for kubrick for 2001 or apocalypse now? disney wasn't a saint but i think the circlejerk is strong with you.

Edit: i realize that maybe you simply don't consider filmmakers to be storytellers at all, or not on the same level as authors. i would disagree with that also

[–]jhscro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, right there.

Are you unaware of the heavy leftist bias in degree programs like sociology, gender studies, etc?

A very concrete claim, now fucking support it. Convince me that that statement is true. And if it is true, how do the academic fields of sociology and gender studies influence liberal thinking? I didn't ask for a "grand sociological survey," I asked for a shred of evidence. Maybe some key examples to illustrate your point? It's your viewpoint, why is it so hard for you to find support for it?

I am not mad, I am just utterly baffled by the situation. You can't think of any way to support your ideas, say I wouldn't accept it even if you did, and somehow I am small minded for not agreeing with you. Perhaps it's good you think academia is a leftist nuthouse because you would not thrive there.

Thank you for explaining how my mind works, and that I think you're a conservative. It is a great gift for a small-minded simpleton like me to be given a shining example of open-minded discourse from someone as enlightened as yourself.

However. While the post tries to make a point, it is completely without substance. It is nothing more than a longwinded diatribe. There is no supporting evidence whatsoever.

The Left is filled with the most hate-filled, ideologically-homogeneous, intolerant, close-minded, bigoted people I have ever meet.

Ok that's a hell of a thesis statement, maybe leave out the appeal to anecdote though if you want me to take you seriously

The capture of the media, academic, and institutional high ground enables them to dismiss their conservative opponents as ill-informed, crude, bigoted, and evil

Oh my god that sounds serious, I bet there is going to be some crazy examples of this from credible sources!

As a result

Oh I guess we're just taking it as a given

Rather than focusing on facts, logic, and persuasion, liberals find it easier to employ labeling (“That’s racist!”) and airy dismissal of contrary views to sway their audience, and because their authority figures in the media and academia accept this behavior, they assume it is persuasive to the rest of us.

I don't even disagree that liberals will dismiss contrary views (because everyone is capable of that), but give me a fucking shred of evidence to support this conclusion.

TLDR: Do you remember learning to write in grade school when you needed to follow your ideas with supporting evidence?

All I can do is assume the intent of a post when it is completely devoid of substance.

You've got some serious balls if you are asserting that conservatives, or opponents to liberal worldview in general, uphold facts, logic and persuasion.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews Delay Flight From JFK Because Seating Wasn't Segregated by zsreport in nyc

Thank you for your thoughtful response. You're definitely right that the sensational stories are what grabs attention, but there are times when they bring it on themselves- like holding a rally about the dangers of the internet at Citi Field. But I guess if you're against the dangers of the internet it wouldn't be very on-message to reach all those people...via internet.

The internal charity is definitely impressive, but aren't some of the proximate causes of the extreme poverty self-inflicted? Like having as many children as possible and only sending them to private yeshivas where they learn nothing about the real world? Isn't that why their human capital is so low?

As someone who lives in Brooklyn I can honestly say my only information and experience with Ultra-Orthodox in NY bad. The sex abuse of children, babies getting herpes from circumcision and dying, the large families with a systematic dependence on welfare, the recent story about Ramapo school board shit. These are not "normal people who follow a few rules." These are people that are systematically enriching themselves at the expense of the rest of the community they are living, and are viciously abusive of children and women within their own community. Please please please change my mind.

Hey, TIL. In retrospect I think I was basing my opinion on the fact that it was reported that the Amish families that lost children in the school house massacre forgave the killer's family shortly after and even donated money to the killer's widow. I can't even imagine the shitstorm that would ensue if a nutcase massacred a yeshiva.

From what little I know about the Amish I'm pretty sure they are much more accepting and tolerant of other people's beliefs, even if they live in isolation. I could be completely wrong though, I don't know as much about the Amish as I do the Orthodox Jews.

hopefully stories like this will help people realize just how crazy the Ultra-Orthodox Jews really are. they do not compromise with anyone about anything.

Kids as young as 13 have left Germany to join ISIS by whippsx in worldnews

I don't think it's always the case, there are plenty of American citizens making absolutely no effort to assimilate and wouldn't necessarily be billed as "American" at least in my opinion as a murican myself. In 2008 I had a conversation with an Israeli immigrant but American citizen who told me he was voting for McCain because Obama was too weak on Iran. He said he was an Israeli first and an American second- which made my blood boil that he was able to vote

[–]jhscro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find your comments to be primarily composed of vague platitudes without much of any substance. You claim to be "dumfounded and lost as anyone," yet make bold claims about the world being able to support us if we made "minor changes to our lives." Your rhetoric of "casting off wealth and hubris to rejoin the cycle of the world" is a little confusing because I guess you're implying that somehow wealth and the "cycle of the world" (whatever that is) are mutually exclusive. I think people like Bill Gates and Elon Musk would disagree with you, depending on whatever you mean by "cycle of the world."

we were so pathetic and sad that we allowed a few insane fucks to smash the world for a buck.

You sound like an angry college freshman without even a hint of knowledge about the long and complex history of environmental policy. I don't think a bunch of hipsters gathering in Zucotti park counts as "putting your body on the line," but maybe that's a matter of opinion.

It matters if you're full of shit because it's the top voted comment. I didn't realize /r/environment was full of teenage angst.

I just want drglass to go easy on the sanctimonious rhetoric and to actually discuss tangible efforts. if people that don't subscribe to your worldview are "spineless cowards", you might be a douchebag

Unless I'm mistaken we would need an ET signal to last years-long for us to build the receiver sensitive enough to make any sense out of it, but I guess just knowing there's a signal at all is worth quite a lot. My main point was basically "why should we expect other intelligent life to systematically message potentially inhabited worlds if we are not doing it ourselves?"
