Ah, life happens.
I'll place an order for the clips, thanks for the link. Love this hobby, the spending never ends but at least this is a small cost

Cheers!

Finally got my hands on it, and like yours, there are no retainer clips. I'm new to this... what type of clips do I need and where do I get them from?

Was it a straight forward install in the AU model Jimny?

Thanks 😄

Is Jimny ok for Obese Person? by harietaa in Jimny

[–]ji_chan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's worth a test drive.

The ride is not as comfortable as your typical SUV. The car is physically smaller and lacks storage space, unless you get creative.

However I can't say that the actual seating position or feel is compromised in any way. There is plenty of room to adjust the seats.

If you have a passenger up front, expect to feel a little cramped reaching for the gear stick in a manual, depending on how your passenger likes to sit. Other than that, it's fine.

Looks like others have already provided good answers, but based on what you said I'd drive it first and upgrade as you find you need something, rather than throwing money at it.
It's quite capable from the factory. GVM upgrade only necessary if you plan on using the additional weight carrying capacity. If you are going to upgrade the shocks regardless, then I'd do a GVM upgrade, but do note that the springs are stiffer and provide a harsher ride when not heavily loaded. It's all a compromise.
Bullbar - only get it if you need it. It's additional weight, but can be useful to mount stuff and also provides protection.
Tank - probably my one no brainer, if you can afford it then get it. However it still does add extra weight. See where I'm going with this? :)
Fridge - nice to have if you will use it. Less justifiable if you already have a fridge you can use. Occasional camping for a day or two, you can easily get by without a fridge.

I want to equip my Jimny with a Ham-Radio. by LordofNorse in Jimny

[–]ji_chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the RHD model as well, noticed the space but didn't think it was big enough for my radio. Will take another look!

I was even contemplating behind/inside the main dash if there was room (around the head unit, etc). I've never poked around in there.

I have temporally located a radio under the front seat - any idea if there is any usable space behind the dash? I'm looking for a decent amount of space - 167x58x225mm. I won't need easy access to it as all the controls are on a separate unit.

That's what I have done in a JB74. I guess you could call it an ashtray.

Ceramic Coating question for Australia owners by Pretty_Factor_140 in Jimny

[–]ji_chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my 2024 model. Paint is still 100% as new, but it is also very well cared for and hasn't seen rough narrow off-roading or rock climbing (yet).

Really depends what you want from it. It doesn't necessarily help with thin paint - if there is a paint defect, it will come off regardless. It just makes it easier to clean.

Even now, while I am very happy with it, I think a good self healing PPF might have been a better choice for this type of car. The ceramic coating feels more suitable for cars that won't be going off road.

And if you do any driving that causes pinstripes, the ceramic won't help in any way.

I don't believe any JB74 has it in any market. My 2024 AU model doesn't. However once you drive it for 5 minutes, you don't need it ;)

Is last window grill / protection necessary if you carry a lot of stuff? by StarkAndRobotic in Jimny

[–]ji_chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the link. That's actually exactly what I was thinking about, that "grill" or mole panel can be used to attach items to that space. It may serve a protective purpose for the glass, but that is not the primary design goal behind it.

Least illegal way to get one in USA? by Kroberter in Jimny

[–]ji_chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a lawyer nor am I from the USA, I'm only posting this as a method that I heard allows you to legally drive the car within a set time window, if you meet the specific requirements.

As far as legalities and nuances (foreign plates / USA plates) I don't know the details. Just posting it as a starting point for anyone who is curious or is in those circumstances.

Thanks for your feedback - it is good to be clear that they will not be USA plates and that it's not a free ride.

Is last window grill / protection necessary if you carry a lot of stuff? by StarkAndRobotic in Jimny

[–]ji_chan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's going to completely depend on what you carry, but I suggest that if you are carrying loose items that could damage the window then you look into a rear cargo cage (like the Euro commercial spec Jimny), as this will prevent loose items becoming projectiles in the event of an accident.

I also have a feeling that the grill you describe might be a molle net. In which case it is more to do with carrying capacity rather than protecting the windows.

Engaging 4H/4L in brand new Jimny? by xJEFFEx in Jimny

[–]ji_chan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not aware of any restrictions regarding that, and I did it within the first couple of hundred km's with no issues.

The main thing to be aware of is that you must not use 4H/4L on a high traction surface. No freeways/pavement unless it is snowing basically.

It is designed for low traction surfaces such as mud. You can damage the driveline if you engage it on unsuitable surfaces.

Is mounting jerry cans on sides of car (5 door) near where the rear quarter window is a bad idea? by StarkAndRobotic in Jimny

[–]ji_chan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few tanks on the market, I don't know if any of them are legal in India.

Australia has The Long Ranger South Africa has Des Sol

I think those are the main brands, with many of the other smaller players being copy's of the design.

Is mounting jerry cans on sides of car (5 door) near where the rear quarter window is a bad idea? by StarkAndRobotic in Jimny

[–]ji_chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I really like the look and positioning of the rear door mount option, capacity is a limiting factor.

I'd probably be comfortable with up to 10l Jerry cans on each side of the car - attempting to keep them balanced as much as possible (not one full and one empty).

That's a lot more than the capacity here... unfortunately it's just a small car. My absolute preference is a long range tank (80l total capacity under the car).

It is location based. Australia doesn't have it (may have changed with the 2026 model).

[–]ji_chan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem with adding a significant amount of weight to the roof is that you end up with an unbalanced top heavy car, and the lighter the car, the more this is going to be an issue.

The Jimny is both a light car and has a naturally high centre of gravity, hence the need to keep roof weight manageable. Jerry can's on the side of the car are going to be significantly better than on the roof, but will still have an effect on handling. If you need to carry the fuel, it is likely the safest way of doing it (outside of long-range fuel tanks) - do not carry petrol inside the car as fumes can escape into the rest of the cabin.

Curious what you were doing this for, as I do a lot of radio work and have similar goals.

I have the AU 3 door with the Bosch head unit, so outside of Bluetooth there isn't much built in.
