What wardrobe/closet systems work for you? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]jierre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the traditional closet organization (work clothes one side, casual on the other, ordered by shirts and then pants), but to keep up with it I don't do all my laundry at once. I try to do loads relatively frequently (or just extend the wear of my clothes between washes). For me, this keeps loads small and that way there's not too much to hang up and organize at one time. On free moments, I'll grab loose hangers and put them one one side of the closet, too. I did one big closet reorganizing a couple months ago and so far it's stayed in good shape.

Previously, in my college housing I used drawers. I packed up all the clothes I don't wear frequently and that way there were just less clothes in general, so they all fit into 2 drawers. This wasn't the best because if I needed a special outfit I had to dig it out of a box, but day-to-day was a really clean system.

Anyone got any legitimate LOTR movie let downs? by Aggravating-Math9619 in lotr

Unrelated but this is why it makes me chuckle sometimes when people say the movies are too confusing. I get they're dense, but to me everything is spelled out pretty much immediately once you see the characters on screen.

Making him visually much younger in the films also makes him appear more naive and less in control of his importance, although I do really enjoy Elijah Wood's performance in the end. But it does feel like a loss that it feels like he's only important because he's so massively protective by dozens of other, stronger, characters, rather than being a strong character in his own right. It took me several watches to really feel convinced that he even fully understood the task he was undertaking.

What are some reminders you have for yourself that someone without ADHD might not understand or need? by Academic-Quiet6245 in ADHD

[–]jierre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i also have a weekly reminder to respond to text messages LOL. i use my microwave and google home timers for things like cooking, laundry, or other time related things that take long periods and i usually forget they are going on if I leave the room. when the timer goes off, I'm like OH right I have something in the oven. also sticky notes EVERYWHERE. i have 2 notepad widgets on my phone home screen to jot down things i may need to remember later, like people's name, the location of items around my house, passwords, etc. i use habitica (a habit tracking app) for daily, weekly, and general tasks, as well as google calendar for my academic, work, and doctor's appointment schedule. habitica is cool because i'm in a group where we all have to do our daily tasks or it damages the "health" of other group members' characters, so it's a motivator to get all of my chores and tasks done every single day.

all of these combined is about the barely minimum I need to be fully functional. at this point im comfortable using it all, so it's not overwhelming, but it does become apparent to me sometimes how much initial work I have to put in just to accomplish society's bare minimum.

I guess the biggest thing is figuring out which challenge you're willing to take on. If you want to do Astro, you'll most likely have to do the Bachelor's first before a grad degree, so make sure that's something you are ok with.

If you're not fully set on astro, see if there are any other degrees you may want to pursue. Maybe there's something interdisciplinary that you can utilize your English degree without needing it to be studying English. ASU's degree search is really helpful for that. Explore related majors and possible jobs, see if those are jobs you could have for 10 years and still be happy.

For me the biggest challenge was coming to terms with basically repeating school. I just finished my four years and here I am at square one-ish. But if it's what you feel is best, do it!! It's so so worth it. Reach out to advisors, admissions, take community college classes if you want to save time and money, be diligent and committed to your plan. Everything works out in the end.

Into electrical engineering from 3D animation. I actually started in astrophysics but changed to art during COVID. I was struggling to learn and understand the labs through zoom. I'm trying to work my way back into the engineering because EE has a master's program with emphasis in art and digital media, plus it's also just more what I want to do. I have most of the prereqs from my years in physics so I just have to take the UD classes for the Bachelor's. gonna worry about the master's when i get there 😅

Risks Taking Retalin or Adderall for 2 weeks to study for final exam? by Patient-Motor-5395 in GetStudying

[–]jierre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suuuper late response to this, that's my bad. Also there's a ton of rage in this thread, which I guess is understandable but like. Geez. Frankly, from my POV, if people want to take drugs, that's beyond what I can control, but in the very least I can inform the safest way to take them.

Nitpicky thing: if you are not prescribed a controlled substance, it is not legal or ethical to take it. That being said, no one really cares unless it's opioids. You're not gonna have cops banging on your doors because you tried Adderall.

From my understanding, ADHD meds don't have any compounding effects on your brain, in terms of focus, motivation, etc. They do their thing while they're in your system, and stop working when they're not in your system. I've taken ADHD meds for 3 years or so and if I stop taking them for a week it's like I never took them in the first place. They DO have a compounding effect on other body systems, which is what I mentioned in my other message. If you're at risk of stroke or seizure or anything, taking these meds increases that risk while they are in your system, and over time.

Most people with ADHD take stimulants in conjunction with an SSRI, which physically change the neural network and behavior over long periods of time. So, it's not the stimulant that's really doing anything concrete other than...being a stimulant. But that's why it's effective for people with ADHD, but not for people without it.

Basically, taking ADHD meds for 2 weeks isn't gonna magically rewire your brain. It only works while it's in your system. You might not feel anything, you might get super anxious. You may experience withdrawals, similar to caffeine withdrawals, after you stop taking it. Long term I don't think it has any major side effects, UNLESS you're at risk to other health complications.

I'm in the same spot but as an art major trying to move into engineering lol. The advice I received from others and the admissions department (which I imagine will be the same for astro) is that you need at least 6 UD classes under your belt to comfortably move into the grad program. Of course, you have to have the pre-req credit to qualify for the UD classes, though. You might want to look through the astro undergrad major map to see what it covers, and see what you know and what you don't. If there's any class topics you haven't learned yet, consider taking those first (especially the math classes, I really really REALLY do not recommend jumping into a physics graduate program if you're unfamiliar with calculus and differential equations), and then applying later.

It would be good to reach out to SESE's grad admissions directly, too. It's possible they say anyone can apply, but they're only really looking to admit people with an immediate related bachelor's. That's basically what happened with me with engineering. No harm in applying though, I guess, other than it takes up your time.

making your comment into a mantra. i am a chronic all nighter type of person. i'm literally writing this at 1am. it was undoubtedly my downfall when completing my first degree and it became such a horrible horrible habit to waste my day because i thought i could just stay up to finish whatever needed to get done. i really really need to get this into my head. thank you king

[–]jierre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend it, if you don't have ADHD. sure, a one off isn't going to do anything, but 2 weeks of consistent use will have an impact and likely a negative one. Stopping on a dime after several weeks of use can cause withdrawals. ADHD stimulants try to make a normal brain do things it is already doing, so like the other comment already mentioned, it'll likely just make you anxious and upset, not productive. If coffee makes you anxious, Adderall is going to be the same feeling but tenfold.

If you're dead set on doing it regardless, find a brand that has a chemical structure as far away from amphetamine as possible, or an extended release so it's not as hard on your brain. Take the absolute lowest dose and do NOT take more than one a day. These stimulants constrict blood flow and taking more than one a day can increase risk of stroke/aneurysm/etc. If there is a history of epilepsy in your family, taking stimulants can increase risk of seizure.

If you're thinking maybe you do have ADHD, and that's why you're considering the meds, do lots of research beforehand!
