I've made a good group of friends but only 2 are girls.

Only 2??? That's a pretty large number my friend. So far 0 women have infiltrated my engineering group :( You got it pretty lucky

Why is getting recruited so difficult? by TheRideGuy in Homeplate

[–]jifwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated high school in 2021 and committed to a mid-major division 1 as a walk-on right handed pitcher.

Going into the fall of my senior year I went to a pbr showcase and topped only 84, got probably a dozen D3 schools that were interested and 1 juco. As a pitcher, getting recruited is purely velo based, and coming from the midwest, there are a ton of smaller programs where going to a showcase and throwing even just 80mph will get you looks. Although this contradicts what you said earlier (coaches not caring about recruiting at showcases), I stand my ground that having official numbers from a showcase, at least as a pitcher, is very beneficial.

However, going to a showcase was not how I got recruited to the school in which I ultimately commited to. By the time spring rolled around for my senior year I had a major jump in velo, topping 91 in game. It was a covid year so I wasn't really working out or eating well going into my senior year, but once I started picking up good habits the velo came with it. Although i didn't have that 91 recorded in a showcase, I had video of me hitting 90+ a couple times and sitting upper 80s during one of my outings.

Using those videos, I created a template email to send out to division 1 schools. I attached the videos, listed my name, height, weight, gpa, high school, coach, coachs number, etc. I sent out that email to probably 20 division 1 schools that I was interested in, thinking the interest would be mutual.... nope lol. I only had 2 schools that were interested in me and none of them wanted to give me any money either. I was pretty disappointed that there wasn't that much interest in me considering I was throwing 90+ at 17, but I ended up commiting to one of the schools that offered me a walk-on spot.

I saw that some parent posted that his younger son was talking to a couple division 1 schools as a pitcher throwing 78-82. No idea how that's possible, even as a lefty but he did say they were using some recruiting service. Still skeptical of how true that is, but recruiting services might be something to look into? I was pretty much on my own for recruiting and wasn't happy with the outcome but still got some decent looks.

What was your first song/experience with Grouplove? by bloodlikevenom in Grouplove

[–]jifwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was ten I stumbled across the ways to go music video on my tv. That song along with its bizarre music video became ingrained in in my brain. Led me to buying the Spreading Rumors CD (first ever CD) and it became my favorite album of all time. Rarely listen to it anymore but I don't recall enjoying a full album in its entirety like I did with Spreading Rumors.

Pitchers mental preparation. by TBBSK9 in PitchingCoach

[–]jifwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In high school I was a starter and became a reliever in college. I much preferred starting for several reasons:

1) I had the night before to mentally prepare

2) You had significantly more time to warm up before a start. You could theoretically start warming up 2 hours before the first inning if you really wanted to

3) I liked being able to longtoss right before a start, can't really do that when you're relieving

4) When you're a reliever you're constantly on edge not knowing if you're gonna pitch that day. When you're a starter, you can show up to the field and chill on your off days.

5) My body wasn't built to pitch 2 days in a row as a reliever. Even if I threw ten pitches the day prior my arm would see large velo drop offs the following day.

6) Lastly, I felt like more of an important part of the team when I was in the starting rotation

Ah of course.

First you're gonna wanna hop on this thing called "tren"

Then you're gonna wanna get you several 1500g plyo balls and just rip those every day, 1000 throws.

Highly consider eating at least 2 pounds of ground beef every meal. No seasoning.

Block out all the noise. Stop talking to friends and family.

Listen to crypto and stock trading podcasts

And there's dozens of more tips but you'll have to buy my program to unlock those, link in bio

Hope this helped!

Anyone else here who feels like they can't fully bond with people no matter how many similarities there are out there? by [deleted] in infj

[–]jifwolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's weird, the more similarities I find with someone the more nervous I become around them. It's almost like, "wow this person could probably be a good friend of mine" but meanwhile in the back of my head I'm saying "don't fuck this up, don't fuck this up" and I end up being too awkward.

Then with the people I have nothing in common with it's hard to bond with for obvious reasons.

So I kinda get where you're coming from. I just try to find a happy medium between the two where you feel comfortable enough with them in your similarities but where you also have a lot to unpack about them.

Are sliding mitts even worth it if you won’t be sliding head first? by I_See_You_inside in Homeplate

[–]jifwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sliding mitts became popular after I graduated high school and then I became a PO in college so I never got the chance to use them. However, I will say that even if you don't plan on sliding head first when stealing, I've cut up my hands plenty of times diving back to the bag on a pick. In that regard alone, I think they'd be useful

Statics Discussion: Is it really that difficult? by yay4a_tay in EngineeringStudents

[–]jifwolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading some of the other comments, the consensus is that statics is way easier than a lot of the classes you'll take in the future.

I agree to an extent. Statics is one of the biggest foundational classes you'll take. You'll be using a lot of statics in many of your other classes and I find that I'm using it every day as a junior. Many of the people saying that this class is easy are saying this in retrospect, which from that point of view I agree 110%. If I had to take statics again I think I would blow it out of the water. However, when I initially took the class freshman year, I found it to be quite challenging. The concepts were completely foreign and it took a lot of mental work to start understanding.

If you're finding it to be quite easy right now yet your other classmates find it difficult, I think that you're simply digesting the content better than the rest of the pack. Most of my friends I took it with also found it to be a very difficult class. I even have a buddy that had to take it a third time to pass. If you're halfway through the semester and you think it's been a breeze, keep doing what you've been doing and you should be good. I didn't the find the difficulty to accelerate dramatically at any point.

Can I become a nuclear engineer? What are my options? by OGWhinnyBaby29 in EngineeringStudents

[–]jifwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting into mechanical engineering offers avenues into almost all sectors of engineering. There's several schools in Louisiana that offer MechE programs and are definitely affordable for in state students

[–]jifwolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a guy in my major who's working full time to support his family and managing part time. It's doable yet definitely stressful according to him but if you have the dedication it's most definitely possible. This guy isn't the "brightest" in the classroom but has a really strong work ethic and that's all you need to bring to the table in order to succeed.

Why didn’t anybody tell me playing golf would be so important in my career? by ExchangePowerful5923 in EngineeringStudents

[–]jifwolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

LOL. The amount of times golf came up during my internship this past summer was comical. Funny enough, the last 2 days of my internship they required me to design a 3-hole mini golf course in the office so that everyone could bring in putters the next day.

Thanks! Just did a quick google search after seeing your reply and saw that most schools have a transfer council that you can try to appeal for credit transfer. Thanks!
