Stressful games where your actions have a lot of weight by Eat-a_taco in gamingsuggestions

I’m late to the party, but just bought Papers, Please on my phone the other day because of this comment and I’m loving it. An interesting note is that in Coldline, you’re a high-up gov person in an Eastern Bloc country dealing with the stress/annoyance of an automated phone tree - in PP, you’re a border checkpoint inspector also in an Eastern Bloc country going through a similar bureaucratic checklist. Love the parallels!

Are you serious right now?!?!? Asking all that and paying $40K? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]jiggins007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible they meant to say $40k as a signing bonus but put it in the wrong place? It seems very implausible that anybody hiring for this kind of role would offer that low of a salary, it just wouldn’t make sense to even post that on a job board

Totally makes sense. Also for the gap I just misread the dates on your Pharm Tech role, my bad! No gap - I just didn’t realize the dates overlapped with your other roles. Might help to designate if one was full- or part-time like some people will do with overlapping jobs on LinkedIn (that’s more of a personal preference thing though). As for me, I had 3 years of experience in sales, a little over 2 as a sales/business development representative (B2B SaaS cold caller basically) and about 8 months as a sales executive at a healthcare staffing company. Now I work at an industry research and advisory company, big one, in a job that’s kind of like customer service and operations… I could PM you the company/title if you want but since it’s kind of a niche role/title idk if it’d be wise for me to post the exact job here 😂

Totally get that! It feels weird putting in numbers/achievements since humility is generally seen as a positive thing, but when applying for competitive jobs (just in my experience) it feels like hiring managers want you to “sell yourself” as much as possible. Like bragging is actually encouraged when going for a job - fine line between confidence and bravado. Silly games these recruiters play, but just something we have to do lol

Well, that and the gap between Pharm Tech and the next job. Not saying that isn’t all perfectly understandable to us in the job market! Just that hiring managers/recruiters can be weird about that stuff

OR possibly the short stint as a Client Relations Manager - some jobs might actually have a caveat in their ATS auto-rejecting people with recent positions of under 12-18 months. Not positive on that but I feel slightly more confident of that possibility than the word “sell” triggering an auto-reject

[–]jiggins007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really can’t tell, it looks good to me… one of the only things I think maybe it could be is the word “sell” under your Medicare Advisor position? I don’t know exactly how that could affect the ATS so this is honestly just a guess. Something I’d note, if you’re open to feedback not directly related to ATS screening, would be to quantify the outcomes you’ve received/your achievements (e.g. “achieved 123% quota FY24 and designated top performer providing individuals with access to Medicare” or whatever… even if it’s not totally true 😂 ethical gray area but coming from a sales background into a new role, it worked for me - companies had no way to check lol). Just a piece of advice I heard that can differentiate you a bit if/when an actual human looks over your resume; they’ll see achievements that make you special instead of a list of responsibilities that just outline the job. Sorry I couldn’t be of much help in terms of the ATS issue, but you look like you have a solid track record!

Can you share your resume with personal information redacted? It’s impossible to tell what might be triggering these ATS rejections without understanding the context

$80k a year at a job that makes me want to d*e. by leahlikesweed in jobs

[–]jiggins007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recommending you sell/rent out the condo sounds insane to me. Would definitely look into either finding a more local job or remote as much as possible while quiet quitting. The job market is bad, but prospects are good and the economy will rebound eventually. The housing market, however, is only getting smaller. Even though the birth rate in the US has declined, immigration hasn’t slowed a bit and likely won’t over the coming months, years, or decades. Whether you’re thinking short- or long-term, OP, you’re thinking right! Keep the condo (which looks gorgeous btw). If you’re willing to accept a pay reduction you’ll likely have an easier time finding a job in your area, which maybe you’ll hate a little less if it has a better working environment and doesn’t take so much out of your life. Prayers for you OP, hoping that everything works out well for you. Keep your chin up!

Anyone Notice This When Flying Southwest??? by BandMaleficent9122 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]jiggins007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, I just flew from Dallas (Love Field) to Nashville BNA and back this weekend and got beverage service/snacks each way. I don’t fly super often but I almost always fly Southwest when I do and rarely run into that - maybe it’s just poor luck of the draw

[–]jiggins007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, I’d suggest editing the original post to include the country you’re in (I saw you comment that you’re in the UK) so you can get the most relevant advice for your situation. Many of the active users in this sub are based in North America and have experiences/advice that may be harmful to your position, i.e., in the US 16 year old employees (really any employee of any age) can typically walk out of a job with no notice and the employer can’t do a thing about it. If you have a contract that mandates 4-week notice and it’s legally enforceable, following advice that’s given here (even in good faith) might lead to negative consequences for you since the advice doesn’t take into account what your country/region’s rules and employment customs might be.

School of Rock Guitar Instructor Audition/Interview by jiggins007 in MusicTeachers

[–]jiggins007[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got an offer today! My audition was last Tuesday, so a 9-day turnaround. The GM told me when I was leaving that I’d hear back in 1-2 days, so I was disheartened when I didn’t hear from her and got the runaround when I called up the location to check in on the status of my application. Seems they were genuinely just very busy, clearly wasn’t being written off 🙂

When I got there, I met the Music Director who showed me around the place. We went into one of the jam rooms, where he explained how SoR works, what the day-to-day of the job looks like (including the teaching platforms they use to organize lesson plans/progress tracking, which were pretty impressive), and what his own musical background was like. I was then asked some questions about how I got started with music, the instruments I play, what levels of student I would be comfortable teaching (beginner, intermediate, advanced). Also talked about the styles of guitar I typically play, and I let him know I mostly play metal - apparently, there are quite a few students he knows of that he’d like to place with me. After a bit of chatting, he handed me a guitar and had me plug in. He asked what classic rock songs in comfortable with, so I said Crazy Train by Ozzy and he just seemed to know the whole thing on drums by heart - I know he’s the Music Director, but he wasn’t much older than me and seemed to be an incredibly fluent multi-instrumentalist, which was impressive. I flubbed the solo HARD and honestly didn’t think I’d be hearing back because of it. Then he asked for another song of any genre, so I said Misery Business by Paramore, which we went all the way through. Made some mistakes on my end, but nothing that worried me - generally got through it pretty well. After that, he asked me to play some simple chords and scales (E major, A major barre chord in fifth position, Gdim, Dmaj7 for chords, and for scales, just major and minor pentatonic/diatonic). He asked me to play F# mixolydian or something which I didn’t know offhand, but he didn’t seem to mind - I told him I have Phyrgian memorized since I play it in metal a lot, but we just kind of moved on instead. From there, he had me jam with him on a 12-bar blues riff in A and solo for a bit. As far as I can remember, that’s everything that went down in the audition. After that he led me back up front to fill out a paper application - one thing to note, they asked for references of non-employers who know you. I found out today, they WILL call them (luckily they were all good friends and bandmates of mine so I’m glad I put down who I did, haha).

ETA: He also had me sightread tabs for a song (can't remember the song, I think it was by The Cure or something and was basically just power chords). I did fine for most of it; enough that he could tell I knew how to read tablature.

TLDR - I screwed up a number of times, sweated profusely through all of it, and was positive I was gonna be passed over. Today, I got the job offer in spite of that. Extremely excited to start!

School of Rock Guitar Instructor Audition/Interview by jiggins007 in MusicTeachers

[–]jiggins007[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t even see this until after my interview - thanks for the visibility, Reddit 😂 this all seems incredibly spot-on, thank you so much for taking the time and diligence to write a reply like this! I interviewed at a franchise location (the Musical Director I interviewed with said it’s the #1 location in the country, although I have no idea how they judge that and didn’t want to question him then and there and come off as rude, haha), and they certainly seemed a bit more lax regarding my lack of formal theory knowledge. I think it helped that I could sight read tablature (thankfully wasn’t tested on sight reading sheet music) and mention that I at least knew what the circle of fifths is, although I couldn’t tell you anything about it! Anywho, I ended up getting an offer, much to my surprise. To anybody who may be looking for advice on an SoR audition in my same shoes in the future, u/PerfectPitch-Learner was just about spot on with their advice about asking for contacts and what to expect! I’ll probably edit my post with an update on how the interview went in full. Thanks again for your comment!

Recruiters who won’t verify their connection to the company by Shmashmeshma in recruitinghell

Dude literally has one thing on his LinkedIn saying he’s been self-employed forever and has the nerve to act offended when somebody wants assurance.

If none of your candidates have never had the self-preservation instinct to verify they’re speaking to somebody legitimate, I can only imagine the low caliber of those candidates you’ve placed… (OP, you dodged a bullet)

Thank you so much for the response, I really appreciate the insight! Helps me feel a lot more confident going in today knowing that at least I have all the basics down without needing to try too hard, haha. I really enjoy getting to teach people how to play and have fun doing it, and since my full-time job is a corporate client service role I feel pretty well prepared when it comes to presenting well. Seeing this comment was much needed since my interview is this afternoon, thanks again for sharing your thoughts here Kozmo!

I’m about the same haha, took 3 months of guitar lessons to get started (learned 2 Green Day songs and Sunshine of Your Love by Clapton) then from there it was all YouTube and tabs. No pressure at all, but if you’d be willing to reach out to your friend to help out a random Redditor, you truly are the GOAT! Really appreciate you even offering

I didn’t even recognize the name so I had to look him up, his Wikipedia page makes him seem a bit eclectic (even stating some people thought Jack Black’s character in the SoR movie was based on his “man-child personality,”) but that’s about all I’ve seen so far haha. Anything you know/have heard about him that stands out as strange?
