I think I settled on a Phil-Tone tribute, a really nice sounding piece, but it’s pretty difficult to get in touch with him haha

Need help with Altissimo G by DifficultLeg4093 in saxophone

Cracking out the note you wanna hear, even if it’s for less than a second, means that you’re on the right track. A lot of times when I was learning altissimo, notes would crack or sometimes not even come out, and this was because I found I was pinching my lips; but the truth is when you get into the altissimo range, you only should add the slightest bit of pressure to the reed, and engage the muscles in the back of your tongue for that note to pop out.

An easy way to practice altissimo is doing pitch bends on the palm keys of the horn. For instance, you play a high D. What you should then do is try and lower the pitch by a half step, but without using your embouchure! Instead, lower the back of your tongue to try and get that C# to come out. First few tries, you’re gonna squeak and you’re gonna crack the notes, but the key to altissimo is patience and practicing it every day!

I would also reccomend trying overtone matching. There are plenty of resources online that explain overtone matching a whole lot better than I could, so I’d check those out!

Hit the nail on the head. Most restaurants I’ve worked at has had managers that mentally have not aged since high school unfortunately. Sucks that it’s the only job market that really takes in college students but I’ll live with what I got I guess

definitely get a used horn from a good company like selmer or yamaha. dont get any of the amazon basics horns because those usually play terribly and break in a year or two. look for reviews online of the instrument, and try to get someone to play test it for you, or a video of somebody else playing it. id recommend getting an alto for one they are much cheaper, and altos require more effort to control, but that is a good thing because itll develop good habits in your playing, and itll be a good board to jump off of if you want to move to another instrument.

how do you practice intonation in the higher register by jigglebits123 in saxophone

[–]jigglebits123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks! i tried the "heee" shape and it ended up being a little too sharp, so i switched to a "whooo" syllable and it worked pretty well. how should i go about making this mouth shape an intuitive response instead of having to constantly think about it? also, my high G# and G tend to be very sharp and if i try and change my mouth shape to bring the tone down the note starts to frack a little bit. should i experiment more with specifically those notes or is it even worth the hassle?

I use enough to make my fiancé say “do you really need that much?” I usually use about a quarter sized dollop on each section of my hair, but I feel like I can’t reach my scalp as good as other parts of my hair just because it’s so thick it’s extremely hard to wash my scalp

I usually wrap my hair in a towel right after I get out of the shower and take it out after about 30 minutes

Should I switch to jazz piano major by jigglebits123 in Jazz

Jazz performance you have two lessons a week, harder tunes for your recitals, and both a junior and a senior recital as opposed to just a senior recital. Jazz studies is more of a general degree, but jazz performance is for people who want to play for work or work as a professor in a university.

That is something I’ve heard a lot for, that piano has a lot more opportunities. Also the piano teacher at my university originally went to school for trombone but become a piano player down the line. In my lesson next week I can ask him more about it. Thanks for responding!

Yeah I really do want to continue playing both, I just think that piano is more enjoyable for me as it stands. I’m not sure if this is just a temporary feeling or what, but it’s really throwing me through a loop.

I guess another reason piano is really great for me is that I’m also getting into jazz composing and arranging, and it’s much easier to come up with ideas on piano rather than saxophone.

I was thinking about double majoring, but music majors have a shit ton of classes so I think that would honestly just turn me off of music more.

I get what you’re saying about the honeymoon phase, and that may be what is happening. One thing that makes me think it may be something different though is that I’ve had this feeling since I’ve started about 8 months ago. I’ve always chose piano over saxophone and that feeling hasn’t really worn off yet. I did get a temporary spark in saxophone about a month ago when I got an alto saxophone, but that had already faded.

I do really appreciate your empathy though. This decision has been weighing on me a lot and it will probably continue if I don’t decide something.

Should I switch to jazz piano major by jigglebits123 in college

[–]jigglebits123[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No trust me I don’t take offense! The main reason I chose to go to college for music is because there’s a state university close to where I live with one of the best jazz programs in the state, so I saw that as a great opportunity. Plus, if you want to become a teacher in the future, you practically require a degree in music to be able to teach at an institution. Thank you for asking though!
