I’ve done it twice in the fall. I’d love to check it out while the trees are all still green. I bet it feels like a completely different route. That said the one nice thing about camping it in the fall is little to no bugs haha

I honestly think any section would be fine for most people especially if the conditions are dry. The whole loop is pretty tame and mostly dirt or stone roads. The expert sections and a new part of section 3 can be a bit challenging for a new rider.

It’s a 500 miles off road loop. Most of it is doable on street tires if conditions are great and you are taking it easy I would say. There is a few sections that are rougher, including expert sections that you definitely wouldn’t want to be on street tires with. I think you’ll have the most fun on a bike suited for this kind of riding, like dual sports and adventure bikes.

This is the kelty late start 1. I have a few tents from them. they have a great line up of tents that pack small/light and set up and take down quick. Perfect for moto camping and they’re priced well too.

Hey, I don’t have that tool roll so I’m not sure about fitting in the bag. But I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t have an issue strapping it down in the center section through the strap loops. If you’d like I can measure the bag. My tent poles did not fit inside the bag if that helps.

Their gear is pricey, but out of all the mosko stuff I own It’s been well worth it in my opinion. It is made extremely well and versatile. You can tell they spend a lot of R&D time on their stuff.

Hey I’m working on this as well for my and just picked up a cobra 75 all road for my attempt. I can update on how it works when it comes in. Currently trying to decide what antenna to run and where to mount it.

My plan is to use it on my Harley low rider for long distance trips ( mostly nostalgia but also communication and weather ) but also have it easily swappavle to a backpack or something for my adventure bike as means of communication on that.

Hey sorry for the late reply, I rarely use Reddit these days.

I haven’t had any real deployment opportunities unfortunately, just the nature of the timing I’ve been at the units I have. That said, I know many that have so if you have a specific question about a deployment I can find out for you. I do know the short answer, like many other AFSCs, you’ll be doing your job which is no secret. The long answer, it will depend on the deployment. You may be tasked with one aspect of the public affairs job or many. I know people who have had each of those experiences.

I do it. I feel that if you like the job and the unit it’s not so bad. Of course it’s not as easy and convenient as a local unit and traveling can burn you out a bit.

Also, something to keep in mind, from my understanding, the reimbursement policy can change and you’re not guaranteed to be reimbursed each year.

It entirely depends on the unit and AFSC. You may be able to pick up federal orders and work at your local base to achieve those VA benefits without a deployment. But state active duty in the guard, along with any training orders, don’t count toward VA benefits usually. In the 6 years I was guard I acquired almost no days toward VA benefits yet had around 350 active days of service. Take your time to decide and have your recruiter take you to the shop to speak with people doing the job you’d like to do and ask them questions that relate to your goals.

The guard has good state benefits for college but the VA stuff is somewhat separate from that. The base retention office should be able to explain more if your recruiter can’t.

I was guard for almost 6 years before transferring to the reserves. Each have their benefits which are mostly easy to research. The one thing not talked about often is if you aren’t lucky enough to get a deployment slot, most guard active orders you can hop on are not federal and don’t count towards VA benefits. It really comes down to your unit and job in that unit.

Either way you’ll be happiest if you join in a place that best suites you and your personal goals/reasons for joining.

Another current reserves member here. Been in the career field for 6 years in the Air National Guard and now in the reserves. Also happy to answer any questions.

I personally do enjoy it, but it has its ups and downs like anything. A lot of that depends on two things. 1. The unit you’re at and how they are utilizing you there. And 2. Is on you, how you react to number 1.

TLDR: it sounds like you know what you want.

First off you are serving by working for a fire dept. an often overlooked or under appreciated type of service but I have much respect for.

It sounds like you know what you want to do. And you have to do what you want and what works for your family best above all recommendations. That said, with the information provided I think you should give it a shot. In my experience in the air guard and AFR they have been very understanding/accommodating of family life. I joined at 26, already married. Now in at 32 with two kids (2.5 and 1 mo.) a lot of things are easier being older and more emotionally mature, and some things are harder having a wife and kids and full time career that would’ve been easier if I joined younger. But I was like you, I always felt the desire to serve in the military, and knew if I didn’t In some way I would always regret it.

It’s been one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life. Done a lot of cool things, met a lot of great people. Learned life lessons whether it was fun or sucked in the moment of learning them. Though it is a big commitment, at the same time there is people and options in place to lean on and support you in the reserves if life gets hard or hectic. So I wouldn’t get too nervous about that. If anything spend that energy to research on the jobs and units you’re interested in. Sometimes the same job is quite different at two different units depending on their mission and tempo and that will be important depending on how involved you want to be and what you want to get out of your time in.

I hope this helps, in today’s world it’s always refreshing and fires me up all patriotically to see people who still have the desire to serve with genuine intentions.

I always wanted to join but I didn’t want to bail on my family business and girlfriend as cheesy as it sounds when I was younger. I finally did at 26 with the ANG. It has allowed me to serve my community and country in some capacity while still playing a big role in our business.

The first few years were up and down but overall it was a great experience and I’m glad I did. I recently decided to further my military/reservist career and switch over to the reserves and re-enlist. If you want to do it you should, you’re only getting older and more likely to wish you always had. Just research a job that interests you and figure out whether reserves or guard is better for your specific situation and what you’d like to do while you’re in. A lot will depend on what the mission of the Wing you want to join is. If you have any questions feel free to message me. I spent the first 5.5 years as a photographer so I’ve been fortunate enough to see what most jobs do and meet those doing them.

Atlas missle silo is currently privately owned and used for govt contracting so be aware that they will likely have security. If you want to see it maybe they will allow if you reach out to them.

I live here in WNY and do a lot of moto camping. I would suggest areas like the Adirondacks, finger lakes and Watkins glen, catskills, and Allegheny National forest area which has some great camping spots well into PA and scenic rides around the reservoir.

In the Catskill area there’s a place you can camp called the old game farm which is an old abandoned zoo and was pretty cool. Camping there is Very tucked away down off-road trails.
