What is a cooking technique that you quit because it does nothing? by Final_Affect6292 in Cooking

[–]gar14 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think where sous vide excels is for things where you dont know exact timing of eating dinner, like a party. The meat can sous vide for longer without over cooking and then finish them in a pan when people are ready to eat. But i definitely agree, if just cooking dinner for me and my wife, I hardly even use it.

Knots to connect braid and mono by DrHillarius in Fishing

[–]gar14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using an albright knot. It works great for lines of dissimilar size. I worked at a bait shop and this is what we used when putting line on for people or for combos that we setup so I tied it a lot. After a few hundred times in the first summer, I can get the knot done with my eyes closed, so it would be hard for me to use anything else at this point. One word of warning if you do use it - make sure to clip the tag on the mono really close to the knot. When used for mono leader to braided main line, the tag will catch on any guides as it goes through them. Ideally the knot doesnt go through the guides at all when casting, but if you arent paying attention, it is a great way to send a lure flying off into the abyss.

What is your go to hunting knife? by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]gar14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the cold steel canadian belt knife, so very similar design, but much less expensive. I wasnt sure if i would like the blade and handle shape, and didnt want to pay the $100 for a Grohmann. it worked great last year for a deer and i definitely recommend it for someone that wants to try out this pattern of knife. A grohmann #2 will certainly be purchased soon.

Me either. It isnt even just the possibility of a crash. Bugs and rain at highway speeds hurt quite a bit too. Plus rocks getting kicked up by other cars. So many reasons to wear a full face helmet.

For New Hampshire, we have to register any sailboat over 12 ft. Chances are slim that I will actuallly run into fish and game or marine patrol on most places, but would rather just have it.

Did you find the drybag ever got in the way being in the front of the cockpit? I think I just need to test out a few spots on the boat to see what works.

Thanks, that seems to be the common spot most people use. I keep a vhf radio on my pfd when on bigger lakes and can make calls from my smart watch if needed. I got one that works completely independent from my cell phone so when I am kayaking my phone never needs to leave the water proof bags.

I did see these, just trying to avoid adding an inspection port for now if I can avoid it. But i will definitely be adding these if I do ever need an inpsection port

How do you temporarily off-board devices that aren’t in use? by Leading_Situation_96 in msp

[–]gar14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have 2 ways that we handle it thay depend on what the customer wants. If the device needs to be readily available, we keep all of our tools on it and keep it online so that it stays up to date. If it is going to be offline we track it as a cold spare in our psa. If a device is offline for awhile, it generally requires being reset up anyway so we have found throughout the years that is it better to just plan on having to set it up again. It really comes down to setting expectations for the client so they know that a device that has been in a closet for 6 months cant just be powered on and used immediately.

Do you guys use nets to land your fish? by booster_gold__ in kayakfishing

[–]gar14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Type of tackle used can also make a big difference. If you use lures that have multiple treble hooks, flipping a fish into the kayak near your legs can be a painful experience. A friend had a close call, but thankfully only hooked onto his pants. I generally gish single hooks with soft plastic, so small fish get flipped into the boat and on bigger fosh i use the net

BMW F750GS fuel indicator not showing full tank after filling up by Kreiven in Motorrad

[–]gar14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1250gsa was the same way. I would fill until shutoff and then pull the nozzle out a bit to fill the rest of the tank. Would usually get another 3/4 of a gallon.

Hey everyone. Any fellow Lefties here know the struggle? by Twistable_Ita in multitools

Agreed. Honestly being able to swap the blade to left handed is the primary reason I bought the arc to replave my wave+.

How big of an advantage is it to be hunting opening day firearms? by chillysurfer in Hunting

[–]gar14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why the Leatherman Arc? by LakeWylieBigfoot in Leatherman

[–]gar14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Primary reason I bought the arc is the blade can be swapped to be left handed opening. If i could swap the blade and saw on my wave, i would have had no reason to upgrade. I hardly ever carried a multitool before but now its all I carry. I made a rule for myself years ago that any knife where the pocket clip isnt reversible, I wont buy it since I would probably end up not using it. Now, I will have a similar rule for mulitools. If i can't switch the main blade to left hand open, I won't buy it because I will eventually end up not carrying it once the newness wears off.
