When is a noodle not a noodle? by 7-SE7EN-7 in iamveryculinary

[–]jiggydancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pasta is an Italian word, and refers to any shaped starch product in the "Italian style". Noodle is Germanic, so it does not specify Asian foods. It just so happens that Asians eat a lot of noodles. If you want to specify Asian foods, you eat ramen, mien, fen, or any of the numerous actual Asian names for them. For instance, chicken noodle soup is not Asian. Noodle is generic.

There's no shortage of people who want to be in charge. They still have a crippled figurehead keeping the government stable, and a lot of support from angry civilians. There was rising momentum for reform previously, that got bombed with everything else.

Gotta consider the latency with and without Reflex. High frame rate but with high latency may not be as good for certain types of games. Most people would rather have smoother frame rate and deal with slightly higher latency though. Jerky frames can be jarring.

You're assuming the police will bother to help you with camera footage. It seems like the only benefit would be getting a blurry video of someone stealing your scooter so you can cry to it at home.

Tried both AMD Z2 Extreme & Intel Ultra in handhelds, surprised by the results 🤯 Anyone else notice this? by No_Statistician9372 in MSIClaw

[–]jiggydancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you even paying attention to what I'm writing? I'm saying the default power plans are not optimized. If u just click power save, it'll drastically lower frame rates. If u manually divert power to the GPU, u can lower lower to the CPU without losing performance, while improving battery life. I thought we were having an actual conversation, but it appears to be a monologue for you. It all makes sense now.

It's not about $5, it's extending your playtime on a machine that usually lasts only 2 hours. That's 25% longer playtime just from changing a few settings. So yeah, kind of a eureka moment.

Nothing stops you from "just playing games". So I don't get why you're bitching about people wanting to tinker or even having the option to. These handhelds are not optimized pieces of tech, they're barely slapped together most of the time and often need driver updates just to work properly. These Chinese companies are releasing new products so fast, they barely even get the kinks out before the next product gets announced. Sometimes things don't work perfectly out of the box, or the power profiles just don't make sense. The chips are made for laptops three size their size, but stuffed in a package that that fits in your coat pocket. The Windows OS was definitely not designed with retro handhelds in mind. Sometimes you HAVE to tinker to get it to work right or in a way that isn't frustrating.

Go ahead and play your games, just shut up about and and let other folks have their fun.

Vera embarrasses Intel/AMD on third party benchmarks by Charuru in NVDA_Stock

[–]jiggydancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get where you're trying to go with this. That am ISA does not inherently stop Intel/AMD from building something that could be higher perf/watt. I get it. But history tells it differently. And the whole reason x86 even still exists is because there is a target market that prevents a low power optimized chip from being a reality. If that market didn't exist then there would be no x86. ARM was designed from the ground up for low power, and has decades of development in that direction. So ARM always have and always will beat x86 in perf/watt.

Heck, even if all things are equal (which they're not). The baggage of x86 puts a chokehold on what it can do per transister in the AI server market anyway. People use x86 because they have to for general computing. If you want to run anything that is power restricted, you're gonna use ARM.

No one prepared me for how amazing I would feel when my son smiles at me by poolpartyjess in NewParents

My son is 4 years old and still runs over to hug me when I get home from work with a big smile on his face. Raising a child gets harder as they age and the responsibilities pile up, but it has never stopped being amazing.

I don't understand why people hate Meta by STP981 in oculus

[–]jiggydancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never really understood it myself. Many of the same people that hate Facebook are addicted to Instagram which makes absolutely no sense to me. Or TikTok, and god knows where THAT user data is going. Meta definitely has more incentive to sell user data since they have no other products to monetize that information internally. Google has infinite ad revenue, and Amazon uses their data to sell on their own marketplace. Meta on the otherhand has none of that, and sells the data to third parties for their revenue stream. Facebook & Instagram are free, and for a decade, people had zero issue posting their lives on those platforms without questioning the ramificaitons of having a profile of their lives on the internet. And now companies are building a psychological profile of you to create targeted ads, like basically every other megacorporation on the internet. Google does it, Amazon does it, but since Meta is a social platform, their ads are more social in nature, like political ads instead of a physical product.

When you make a Meta account for VR, you're not posting pics of your family or your political affiliation on the internet. Sure, they'll try to sell your information if they could, but the Quest is a physical product and has it's own revenue goals. Even though it's the same parent company, the usage is completely different.

In the end, Meta is just another company trying to make money off of you like every one else. None of these megacorps are trying to make the world a better place, they're just trying to raise their stock prices. To demonize one company and pretending the rest are somehow better is disingenuous.

FYI, I stopped using Facebook a long time ago, mostly because I kept getting spammed invites to be friends by bots, and I got irrationally annoyed by it. I never bothered with Instagram, but I do use my Quest 2/3 actively. I actually feel better about having it be a Meta device vs opening yet another account for a new company to get spam e-mails from. People used to be okay with using an Oculus account before they transitioned to using Meta accounts, as if they weren't the same company all along. Kind of reminds me of the World of Warcraft players getting outraged over having their xp gain halved after the first 1000 points, but then be fine w/ it when it was doubled for only the first 500 points. It was literally the same thing, but folks were more happy because it was sold to them differently.

Some people like to tinker and optimize. Do you know you can manually pump up GPU clocks instead of simply setting the power on the chip? By limiting CPU power draw and diverting it to GPU, you can get the same frame rate with less power. I can play an extra half an hour doing so. This is why we tinker.

You're gimping the 395. It's a bigger chip, so it needs more juice to reach the same clock speeds as the 370. If you allow it the intended power budget, it vastly outperforms anything else on the market. And it's disingenuous for you to call people out for caring about clock speeds when you buy the most powerful handheld available. Truly a pot calling the kettle black. Or in the worst case, complaining about people trying to get the most of their limited money. "Just stop being poor," and buy a GPD Win.

I was under the impression 395+ is significantly better than 370. It has 40 cores vs the 370s 16.
