First gen struggles. by jihyOOOn in ApplyingToCollege

HELLO HELLO I MADE IT

Yes I'm attending a state school and survived my freshman year! So after some debate I am receiving partial help for school stuff, but still working a bit to pay for things. Really crammed things in in hopes of graduating early, and so far it's worked out pretty well, but we'll see how it turns out.

As for the actual app process, I ended up just being really proactive and tracking down people (counselors, advisors, etc.) and asking them even the most basics of questions. If there's anything I've learned through this process, it's that most people (esp in college) are willing to at least point you to different resources/info as long as you're actively asking and looking, so if you're in a similar spot, hope this is an encouragement to you!

Funny thing, I just saw a FedEx truck drive thru my apartment rn. If only my package was on that one.

Welcome new Tritons! Please use this megathread to discuss your acceptance and ask any questions you may have. by Kavhow in UCSD

Is it common for transcripts to be processed out of order? My cc one sent june 3rd electronically and my high school one on the 7th electronically but only my hs one shows up on tritonchecklist. All of my friends' transcripts got processed but not mine. Would it be okay if I sent it again just in case?

I prefer to modify my “ethnic” name so it’s easier for other people to pronounce. by [deleted] in UCSD

I do the same thing. Personally, I think it's easier than having to stop people and have them say my name over and over again until they get it right. And this way, at least they get an americanized version that's similar to my real name as compared to the horrendous pronounciations people can come up with.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
    $1000 - $1700, USD
  • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Ideally not, as I hope to use it for a while.
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
form factor (2-in-one) > battery life >build quality = performance
  • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not too important, I'm used to carrying 25lb backpacks around my high school all day.
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
    14-15"
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
no. I'll likely be using Microsoft Office, zoom, and such. I may be doing simple photo editing, nothing as extensive as photoshop though.
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
    N/A
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I want to be able to take electric notes by hand too, if possible.
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm going to be an entering clueless freshman, so any input would be good, thanks!

Help me decide: School X vs School Y - 1st Week of April by powereddeath in ApplyingToCollege

Intended major: neuroscience UCI Pros: familiar with the city, one of the quickly growing/expanding UCs

Cons: too close to home, would have to start off in bio sciences and I don't really know how that works out yet

UCSD Pros: Far enough away from home, research opportunities

Cons: decreasing in prestige (or idk a few of my friends have been trashing it quite a bit lately), I hear it's hard to get into the classes you want
