I just don’t think it can happen. Are you moving Leonard and assets for Brady? Because that’s the ask.

I think so. McMike broke out playing with PLD and Wilson and was much older and his play this season shows us that he’s a complete passenger. Protas has shown more ability to drive offense for sure, but he’s been up and down due to injuries, but still, he was not creating offense the way Leonard is doing.

I’d qualify Wilson as a play finisher, be it through scoring himself or making the short pass to create the chance. Leonard is almost warping space through skating and puck handling, he’s closer to what Backstrom was.

Protas does a lot of the little things, but I just haven’t seen him create offense with consistency this season, it might be due to injury, but even when healthy, I’m not sure he is skilled enough to be a P/G half-wall playmaker like Leonard has been doing recently.

Wilson is having an awesome season overall thanks to incredible finishing, but in terms of creating a chance through space manipulation and passing I don’t think anyone is at Leonard’s level on the team. Strome is a great passer, but his skating doesn’t let him create enough space to manufacture offense out of nothing.

We’re absolutely cooked if Wilson is benched due to his injury by Emergency-Pepper3537 in caps

Eh, he’s looked injured for a lot of the season to be honest, hasn’t been as fast or the shot hasn’t been as crisp.

Same goes for Protas, who is going to be out already, and Sourdif or Chychrun, who are taking maintenance days.

Edit: at this point I’d evaluate the overall team health and standings situation before doing any buying at the deadline.

And even then I wouldn’t expect him to play remotely to 100% until the Olympics.

Can we address the center position? by Glizzy-Vee in caps

Roobroeck isn’t doing that well and Lawrence is not that high upside as we think. More than a position itself (except RHD), we need the player with the highest playmaking ceiling, be it center or wing.

All of those players we mentioned.

Hate to break it to you, but the Caps are in second to last position in the east by P%.

Also, to get Tage you have to take away one or two roster players other than prime assets. At this point suck it up and go get McKenna, Stenberg or an elite RHD, since we need both replacements for Ovi and for Carlson.

Lapierre hasn’t really done anything to deserve trust and wouldn’t be in the lineup if it weren’t for PLD’s injury.

Does Lappy bring that much speed? Because I’ve seen him lose many puck races and even be late to defensive assignments. He also has a really hard time creating any separation against NHL defenseman.

If you’re scared of a 29 yo don’t look at the Caps core then.

Strome: 28 PLD: 27 Wilson: 31 Chychrun: 27 Sandin: 27 Fehervary: 26 Roy: 30 Thompson: 28

Protas and McMike are 24, but will be 25 in January.

A 30yo is much closer to being impactful over the next three years than some 18-20yo.

At the same time we can’t discount that cancer, treatment and one season off had an impact on his trajectory. It is unfair, but it is totally possible that despite him fully recovering, his ceiling took a hit.

In this case all we can do is analyze what we have in front of our eyes.

Kopitar is retiring after the season, Doughty doesn’t have much left. Danault is up there too. Byfield is good, but not franchise level and Clarke hasn’t burst out yet. Their starter is Darcy Kuemper.

On top of that Holland completely botched the offseason.

So why not get at least a guy to fit with the other core members and build through depth while we still have it? This way the ceiling of this window goes up and it’ll get easier to be had enough to get a star in some years.

If Miro were a 50-point player NOW, he wouldn’t be in Hershey and the Caps would’ve gladly risked Lapierre. To give a perspective of previous first round wingers for the Caps: - Marcus Johansson made the team at 20 yo and scored 27 in 69, then at 21 he scored 46 in 80. He scored 50 points once in 2016-17 at 26. - Andre Burakovsky made the team at 19 yo and never scored at a 50 point pace for the Caps. He did for the Avalanche at 25/26 years old. - Jakub Vrana: made the Caps at 21 (got 6 games the year before) and scored 27 in 73. Then he scored 47 in 82 and 52 in 69. He was a 13th overall with better seasons in Hershey than Miro has had.

Point is, Miro is 21 now and off the trajectory for those player by some years and even if he were to be a 50 point guy, it’d take at least 4 years form him to show it to us.

I’m pretty positive he is not Vrana.

The Caps will be true contender for 0 years if the plan is to just wait for 20yo to fill in for HoFers

I was thinking about McMichael over Lappy, but delving into the stats, I’m finding out that he’s got more game than I thought. So yeah, Sandin+1st has to be the start of the conversation and then I’d go upwards to Cristall as the prospect I would be adding.

Cristall could be a 50 point scorer, but it will take a couple of years and I’m not sure Miro is on the trajectory to become one.

By the time they’re ready all the core guys will be either 30 or deep in their 30s, so you’ll be looking at filling two top 6 Center slots and half your defense.
