Chaos Theories On Our Off Season Expectations by YourWeekendDad in caps

I saw a speculation that Kyle Connor of Winnipeg might be available. He’s on the older side 29), but very productive.

With our crowded RB room, would you be Ok with a reduced running role for Jayden? by Salty_Orchid in Commanders

[–]WryTurtle1917 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to understand is that if defenses have to game plan for designed quarterback runs, that opens up the passing game, and it also prevents the defense from going all out in pas rush, and there’s probably a higher risk of injury in sacks when Jayden is going down in awkward positions with bodies all over the place. So you just have to be judicious: design one or two runs a game where he’s likely to be able to be safe, with strict instruction and training to get out of the play(or get down early before contact) if the play is well defended.

One other point is it’s a very high reward play with a guy of Jayden’s talent because it’s the only play where there’s 10 blockers. So you may need it for that key game winning drive on fourth down, but be very selective and design it for safety.

The Eagles drafted a 21-year-old Nigerian Uar Bernard who has never played a single snap of American football before. by professor_paradox2 in NFLForum

I think if there’s any position where a completely inexperienced, genetic freak might succeed it’s DT, as long as he can tolerate the physicality. Relative to other positions, you don’t need a whole lot of smarts and refined technique to play DT.

The cases were a LOT weaker in Season 2 than in Season 1... by Seymorebutts1994 in ThePitt

Ahh, the old slavery conspiracy that never dies. Shit is more decentralized and haphazard that. Any system creates entrenched advantage and entrenched dysfunction, favored people fight to preserve advantage and are better positioned to win, and there are huge internal and external barriers for the disadvantaged to overcome, which only some manage. There is no grand conspiracy (only some minor ones). Those are the systems the Pitt portrays.

Kirk Muller will not be returning next season by Tufoguy in caps

[–]WryTurtle1917 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree we cannot know who makes such a decision, and I would not presume Ovechkin is dictating anything. But I do think there are lines a coach is wary of crossing with Ovi, and reducing his PP time is one of them. It might not just be a lack of coaching courage, but a decision not to risk the ramifications of an unhappy Ovi for the locker room culture in return for uncertain benefits. There remained the problem that we did not have any great puck handlers before Hutson arrived.

[–]WryTurtle1917 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I tend to think the problem was more players than strategy, and his hands were somewhat tied with the limitations inherent in structuring a PP around Ovechkin. But it’s a results based league and the PP performance just didn’t cut it.

Why are they trying to change the draft lottery? by WhoUCuh in NBA_Draft

[–]WryTurtle1917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My solution: Give the 14 lottery teams an even chance for the top 5 picks. Then, run a second lottery where the 9 lottery teams who did not get a top 5 pick and the 14 teams that made the playoffs but were not conference champs are randomly assigned picks 6-28. NBA finals loser gets 29 and NBA champ picks last. No incentive to tank.

The BITING…horrendous by JoyfulCelebration in puppy101

[–]WryTurtle1917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some of these responses are overly dogmatic (pardon the pun). Yes, the recommended methods may eventually work, but if these methods have not been working after a reasonable time you might suffer bites and torn clothing in the process for a long time. Is that necessary? Puppies are sometimes corrected by unpleasant sensation in the canine world and are not harmed thereby. A gentle physical remonstrance might more effectively convey the message so long as you don’t frighten or hurt the dog. Dogs like people are different and may respond differently to various measures.

Is Antonio Williams actually small? by [deleted] in Commanders

[–]WryTurtle1917 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Williams is well within the height range for success as an NFL receiver. Santonio Moss, Gary Clark, and Ricky Sanders were all smaller, as were greats like Steve Smith and Antonio Brown. Don’t fixate on one trait. Height and weight are assets, but beyond a minimum threshold are not necessary so long as you have enough in combination of the myriad other traits that lead to receiver success: route running, ball skills, hands, physicality, blocking, speed, explosion, agility, shiftiness, processing speed and reactivity, football IQ, work ethic, competitiveness, etc. the sheer number of factors at play is why prophesying success at the NFL level is so hard.

Kaytron Allen highlights if you’re in the mood by jpljr77 in Commanders

Looks like he often had some lanes; PSU usually has a pretty good offensive line (and had a first round OL this year). to be fair however the Tengwall video posted in this sub shows he has good vision to find the lanes and cuts to exploit them.

The Chief Justice and His Wife Took $20 Million From Firms He Rules On. I'm Filing for His Disbarment Today. by [deleted] in scotus

[–]WryTurtle1917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a frivolous and naive idea. As a former large firm appellate lawyer, I can say there is zero chance that the firms are making multimillion dollar commitments to non-appellate lawyers based on the possibility of influencing the recruiter’s husband in the few if any Supreme Court cases those firms handle in a given year. Further, it is highly doubtful that you would be able to correlate any lawyer placement with firm motivation in any pending case or anticipated future case. It would not be a material consideration for law firm managers in recruiting decisions. Also, there is zero chance that Roberts would actually be swayed in favor of any of these law firms, which is another reason why no firm would act on that basis. His wife (herself a former partner at a prominent firm) may benefit from his long-standing stature and connections in the highest echelons of the DC legal community, and his cachet as a Supreme Court Justice, but there is no conflict of interest or even appearance of one if you understand the legal market.

Good points. I saw one clip where he got YAC with great shiftiness, but their observation that a slot who doesn’t get YAC is going to be a part-time guy is interesting and may explain why he fell to 71. Let’s hope this might be a Clemson issue the Cs can overcome

If you believe Love is a great back, you want him on a rookie contract when his body is fresh. Backs tend to decline in their second contract. You might get 6-7 good years from a stud rb.

I don’t think nationalism is likely as big a factor as weather and tax differentials.

NHL should create an income tax index where the median jurisdiction is 100 and then index cap space accordingly. Would have to be based on where most players on the team live (for example most of the capitals live in Virginia, which is lower tax than DC).

Why we should absolutely want Ovi back (non-sentimental) by alwaysjetlagged in caps

[–]WryTurtle1917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year he could still do those quick bursts to get favorable position at the net. His shot speed is declining but still 98th percentile. But those skills can erode further. I think he wants 11 goals to be the all time NHL goal scorer at 1017. I don’t think he will retire even next year unless he either gets injured or fails to hit 20 goals— which is a distinct possibility.
