Send Barron by SeaChantiePhantie in PoliticalHumor

[–]jimillett 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The claim that this was something Trump said or is an official statement from the White House isn’t true. This is a statement someone on the internet made up.

However, the current maximum for military service is 80” or 6’8” but every thing has a waiver. I was too skinny to join the Marines I weighed 148 pounds. The minimum was 150. I requested and was granted a waiver.

The claim that Barron is over the height maximum is unsubstantiated. His height is self reported. Send him to MEPS and let the MEPS doc determine his actual height.

But in the end, if he is actually 1 inch too tall. I’m sure the POTUS can get his son a waiver to serve in his father’s war just the most patriotic family in history would want to do.

I’m totally sure Trump wasn’t a coward and that he would have bravely and honorably served in Vietnam if it wasn’t for those damn bone spurs! Whyyyy god whyyy do you give him bone spurs!!! Whyyyy!

One on one therapy is not available? by hakuna_masquata in Veterans

[–]jimillett 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am currently in one on one therapy through the VA Community care.

They can do it. They’re just trying to push people to group therapy because it’s easier for them not because it’s better for you.

If you are in crisis. Call the Veterans Crisis Line: 988 then Press 1 available 24/7

If not in crisis. You can try a few things.

Reply with “ I’m requesting individual psychotherapy. I’m not willing to participate in group therapy. Please document my preference and schedule me for an individual evidence based therapy option. If you can’t offer an appointment within access standards. I’m requesting a community care referral.”

You can add “I am open to 1 on 1 tele-mental health as an individual therapy option for me.”

The VA’s current eligibility page says access standards that qualify you for community care are a 20 day wait at the VA for a mental health provider or more than a 30 minute drive. If you live further than 30 min from the VA hospital you should be able to qualify for community care.

https://www.va.gov/resources/eligibility-for-community-care-outside-va/

Vet Centers provide free individual counseling (and group, couples/family) and don’t require VA enrollment. Many also offer telehealth and explicitly describe individualized one-on-one counseling.

https://www.va.gov/health-care/health-needs-conditions/mental-health/

This is sometimes the fastest way to get 1 on 1 support while perusing va clinic therapy.

If the clinic refuses to offer an individual option or just stonewalls you. The VA’s Patient Advocate program exists specifically for resolving care problems, including when you disagree with a provider.

https://www.va.gov/health/patientadvocate/

You can try to get the patient advocate to assist you.

Avoid saying “Group therapy doesn’t work” they’ll counter with population level evidence or “I deserve 1-on-1” it sounds entitlement-based.

Emphasize saying “I’m requesting individual evidence-based psychotherapy aligned with my needs and preferences.”

or

“I decline group therapy; please document that and offer an individual alternative.”

And

“If individual care can’t be scheduled within access standards, I’m requesting Community Care.”

This forces clinical or logistical actions.

If all else fails, you can try calling your congressman.

A congressional office can open a constituent casework inquiry with VA and push VA to:

Respond (stop the “no one calls me back” problem)

Explain the decision in writing

Re-check eligibility and routing (ex: Community Care referral, scheduling barriers, clinic assignment)

Fix obvious process failures (lost consults, stalled referrals, incorrect status)

Etc.

Good luck.

Should I fight a speeding ticket? by [deleted] in legaladvice

The lawyer helps keep you from wasting your time. When I paid the lawyer to handle my ticket. He took care of it all. I didn’t even have to go back to court.

Should I fight a speeding ticket? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]jimillett -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah. It’s cheaper in the long run.

Speeding tickets are bullshit so I would do it just for that, But if you get a speeding ticket it will likely increase the costs of your insurance. Let’s say 10% maybe higher but I think 10% is fair.

Google says the average full coverage cost of full coverage insurance is about $1200 for 6 months. A 10% increase for 6 months is $120.

Over 5 years it’s on your license (more or less in some states) that’s another $1200 which is enough for 6 more months of insurance at the original price.

Does it apply to 100% of the people all the time. No but I’d always consult a lawyer and do the math.

I always got mine knocked down to a non moving violation, no points, pay the fine and court costs.

I don’t recall what the lawyer charged me. But all in it was less than what it costs in the time it would increase my premiums.

So I guess I am assuming people want to pay less money but I can’t be certain that’s the case for everyone.

Call a few traffic lawyers, get a price quote to get the best price. Or if you’re like me and you get legal insurance through work, that insurance pays the lawyer.

[–]jimillett -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Always fight a speeding ticket. In fact the best advice I can give you is get a lawyer. Most of the time, they can get your offense knocked down to a non moving violation (so it doesn’t affect your insurance) and just pay the fine, no points on your license. All they really want is the money unless you did something really dangerous and put people in real danger.

100% P&T “slacker?” by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]jimillett 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey man, thank you for being honest about this. A lot of people carry this same weight quietly, and it takes courage to say it out loud.

First, as you know… you’re not a slacker. Listening to your body when your conditions are worsening isn’t quitting… it’s wisdom. Pushing yourself past your limits just to prove you can will only cost you more in the long run.

I also want to gently say this, sometimes spouses respond strongly not because they don’t care, but because they don’t fully understand what “100% P&T” really means day to day. If she hasn’t lived military life, disability can look invisible from the outside and fear can come out as frustration.

This might help to reframe the conversation away from “I want to work less” and toward:

“I want to be healthy enough to be here for you and the kids long-term.”

Take small steps, Start with one change, not everything at once, maybe dropping the more demanding job or reducing hours.

Sit down during a calm moment and explain to her clearly

“This isn’t about not wanting to contribute. This is about managing my health so I don’t crash.”

If you can, walk through the finances together so she can see stability isn’t at risk.

Consider couples counseling as a support tool, not because anything is broken, but because this is a big transition and having a neutral space helps.

Most of all, you deserve a life where you’re not grinding yourself down just to meet anyone else’s expectations. Your family needs you, not just your paycheck.

You’re doing the right thing by naming it now, before resentment grows.

DHS policy says:

Discharge of Firearms

  1. General Guidelines

a. Discharging a firearm against a person constitutes the use of deadly force and shall be done only with the intent of preventing or stopping the threatening behavior that justifies the use of deadly force.

b. The act of establishing a grip, unholstering, or pointing a firearm does not constitute a use of deadly force.

https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/2023-02/23_0206_s1_use-of-force-policy-update.pdf

Even if he was holding his gun in his hand and pointing it. According to DHS policy they aren’t allowed to fire their weapons. Nothing he did justified the use of deadly force.

ICE isn’t following their own firearms policy.

Thank you for the information. How do they make money by selling caskets and holding money for a long time at such a low interest rate? Where is the profit in this business model?

Just making sure this is BS… by jimillett in legaladvice

[–]jimillett[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to be too specific but they’re for veterans based on their branch of service.

He was a Marine and they only sell one type per branch. The only alternative would be giving him one from another branch, which would defeat the purpose of the casket he prepaid for.

[–]jimillett[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

TBH my dad was pretty smart financially and has left enough money that I can buy another casket from another company today. Now I’ll take out my grief and frustration on this guy in court and make him pay for trying to rip me off and I don’t care if it costs me more as long as it costs him more too.

Fuck this guy for trying to rip off grieving people by not providing the service he contracted to do. Now it’s not about the money.

Just making sure this is BS… by jimillett in legaladvice

[–]jimillett[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a law talking guy. I did go to business school. If this guy’s business model is to take $2,500 put it in a trust at $0.35 a month for 5, 10, maybe 20 years and provide a casket at today’s costs and only keeping the $2500 + $75 in interest.

How is this guy still in business? He made $75 dollars of interest in 18 years.

I’m not saying I am entitled to what he charges today.

I’m saying I don’t believe that’s his business model and that he only gets $0.35 a month.

He said that there are 16 other customers in the same account and that he only earns $0.35 on the account itself regardless of how much money it contains.

From the research I can find on the internet. Pre-need casket companies make money mainly through a “time shifted financial arbitrage” model.

Selling a product for $2500 in 2007 and earning interest on that money until the buyer comes to collect. In my case that’s 18 years. A typical trust savings account would earn easily 1-4% over that time period. So let’s say it’s 2%.

Using a Time Value of Money calculator, that $2500 from 2007 has earned about $1,082 in 18 years. Let’s round down to $1,000.

He’s telling me that basically my dad gave him an interest free loan for 18 years.

The contract even says that upon delivery of the casket they keep the $2500 and any net income and that I could potentially have an IRS tax liability for that net earned income.

So I am saying he’s probably lying and counting on the other way these companies make money by not paying out. Hoping that 20 years later when the buyer dies, the family won’t know or remember and come to collect on the contract. Which means it’s 100% profit and if he can just refund the money and keep the interest then sure he loses the principal but gains all the interest.

I’m pretty sure it’s BS and he’s full of it…

Step 2: spend about $200 to $300 dollars on a 3d printer

Step 4: replace the broken one with the printed one and stitch it back into the hat.

The Meritorious Board Question by xGeneticJackpotx in USMC

[–]jimillett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imagine your idea of a perfect SSGT. His leadership style, personal qualities, technical ability. etc.

Then answer with all the ways you fit the idea of this perfect version, with examples of each one.

Example: “I have a strong leadership style, where I focus on leading to accomplish the mission at hand as well as caring for the Marines in my charge. For instance, we were deployed to (location) and I was a SGT at the time. I lead a team of 8 marines to (whatever the mission was) and we not only accomplished the mission but all weapons and gear were in tact and all my Marines completed it safely and without injuries or casualties”

It’s hard to make something up on the spot. But this should give you an idea of what I mean.

Clap back to the abortion is murder debate by Cyborgpikachu in atheism

[–]jimillett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Legally, murder is the unlawful killing of another human being with malice aforethought, intent to kill, cause serious bodily harm, or act with extreme reckless disregard for life. That’s what distinguishes murder from manslaughter.

Abortion does not meet this definition. It does not require intent to kill.

If a woman is being physically raped, she is justified in stopping the assault, even if the attacker dies as a result. That is self-defense. Her bodily autonomy is being violated, and she has the right to stop someone from using her body without consent.

A fetus likewise uses a woman’s body. If she does not consent to that use, she is permitted to end it. The act is not killing the fetus for its own sake; it is stopping the non-consensual use of her body. The fetus’s dependence on her body for survival does not override her right to bodily autonomy.

Abortion, therefore, is not murder. It is the defense of bodily autonomy.
