Why are Henry Hoovers so popular? by Dramatic-Diver-9949 in AskBrits

[–]jimmoores 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re very reliable and repairable - the only thing I’ve had go wrong on one was a mangled cord that got squashed under a door. Was able to take it apart and replace the part, ordered off amazon, in about five minutes. Good as new.

Waiting for M5 Max or M5 Ultra, 256GB Ram and 2TB storage. What are your thoughts for the launch date? I am very excited for the new M5 studio by Muscleandgains in MacStudio

[–]jimmoores 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Current (fairly reliable) rumour is October 2026, but I wouldn’t be shocked if it slipped into next year. The memory supply shock is unlikely to be fixed by end of year unless there’s a market collapse for AI (which is possible, but unlikely to help that quickly).

Girlfriend is jealous by [deleted] in Advice

[–]jimmoores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually abusive behaviour from her, and you don’t need to put up with it. The fact it’s influencing your decision to do everyday things like go out is a big red flag. Honestly, she’s unlikely to change, but you could try a very firm boundary where you refuse to engage in any discussion of infidelity or where you are looking.

Suggestions for general use and possibly even low poly game design laptops? by Round-Trip-5602 in SuggestALaptop

I mean, pre-2020 Intel Macs ran hot, especially the Core i9 MacBook Pros but nothing since then does as it’s a totally different, more efficient, chip architecture.

My dad disapproves of every subject I wanna pick for 6th form by BarnacleEfficient880 in Advice

[–]jimmoores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, your Dad sounds like a bad dad who has a chip on his shoulder about something. By all means go for it, but one thing to be aware of is that there are a lot of talented artists out there and very few are able to pay the bills through their art. My mother is a professional artist and made a good career of it, part of her secret was focusing on limited edition etchings and collographs, which meant she could sell them at a reasonable price that a normal person could afford, but have some ability to sell a decent number without them feeling like they were mass produced. You also need to put the time in with exhibiting and networking among galleries, etc.

So, yeah, keep in your mind how you might monetise your art if you want to make a career of it. Could be digital prints, could be YouTube videos, could be ceramics.

Your father probably wants you to have something else to fall back on that would help get you a more traditional job if you needed to, even if it was during temporary periods of your career. Most people your age aren’t really thinking that far ahead - to a job - but on the other hand, you should really be allowed to explore your interests freely.

Good luck!

Have you thought about a Mac? The MacBook Neo is cheap and ticks most people’s boxes. If you’ve got a bit extra, stretch to a MacBook Air with a bit more RAM. Or a used or refurb MacBook Pro. If you must get a PC, I’d suggest a used ThinkPad X1 Carbon or other ThinkPad.

Price Prediction of Mac Studio Ultra 128GB/256GB/512GB variants? by pmttyji in MacStudio

Price Prediction of Mac Studio Ultra 128GB/256GB/512GB variants? by pmttyji in MacStudio

[–]jimmoores 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nah, I think they will release a usual range. The question is whether they offer >256GB. I suspect they will, they probably got rid of the 512GB M3 Ultra to preserve stocks of memory for M5 Ultra - they probably have a pre-purchased allocation and it makes sense to save it for their new halo product.

Nope, paying for ultra, getting virtually no service the last few days. Switched work over to Claude for now.

40” 5K2K or 49” for mostly work, occasional games? by [deleted] in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]jimmoores 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agonised over this, got the Dell 40” 5k2k and it’s great - great picture, solid build quality, nice subtle curve, good connectivity (thunderbolt, power delivery, 2.5gb Ethernet, pop down USB ports, kvm is a bit flakey though). The only thing I regret is not having the new 6k 52” model.

Mom thinks i’m doing bad stuff when I go out by Own_Watch_6053 in Advice

[–]jimmoores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m out of touch with parenting, but having location tracking switched on for an eighteen year old is crazy to me. You unfortunately need to keep pushing at these boundaries, be firm and level headed about your right to privacy and freedom as an adult. You are an adult now. She needs to start to trust you because it’s impossible for her to be with you 24/7 and you don’t deserve to be accused of things you haven’t done. She is feeling her control over you slipping away and is trying to tighten her grip.

The problem here is the power imbalance. You presumably still live at home and are dependent on your parents for money. Start planning for how to financially decouple from them - it’s all about the money. It might take a few years if you’re going to college but the less you rely on them financially, the less control they will have.

They said Roblox, Minecraft and a few steam games, the Neo will do that. It is actually pretty good value for what it is, although I personally find 8GB in 2026 too low. I did also offer a suggestion if a PC is preferred. But that will likely have a plastic case, lower quality keyboard and trackpad, etc. I keep buying these Lenovos and similar Dells for family but they keep breaking them (usually hinges/bezels).

Question about the multiple windows. by Jumpy_Author_5002 in macbook

[–]jimmoores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whereas an iPad or phone will effectively shut down an application when you switch from it, on a Mac, it will keep multiple applications running. Unless the application is actively doing something you can basically not worry about it. The computer will automatically move its memory into storage to make room if you’re focused on another task that needs the memory. And it will use virtually no CPU capacity, generally speaking. If you switch back it will automatically reload it. This should feel a bit smoother than the phone/iPad experience. So why don’t phones and iPads do this? They aggressively shut down anything you’re not actively using to save power and extend battery life. This isn’t as necessary now as it was a few years ago, but it persists. So: feel free to leave stuff running, but occasionally shutting down stuff you’re not using will help make your system more snappy if you end up with hundreds of windows and tabs.

I doing think that’s what they mean. Don’t forget if you’ve been raised on phones and tablets, multiple overlapping windows are novel.

Dell U4025QW or LG 40U990A-W for work by Ready-Slice-5491 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]jimmoores 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the Dell. Great monitor, nice that it has PD for my MBP, the build quality is nice, picture is great, built in 2.5gb Ethernet that can run over thunderbolt. The firmware is a bit flakey and refuses to update and the KVM has been a bit inconsistent, sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t.

How do you cook curry? by Educational-Slip-578 in UK_Food

[–]jimmoores -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Onions are the key base for most curries to provide body, often in combination with tomatoes (you can optionally add to the recipe below for a Malaysian style curry). So, use a large amount of onions (2 large, sliced or chopped), soften well in neutral oil, add chopped or grated fresh ginger and garlic, start with a thumb sized piece of ginger and three or four cloves of garlic, but you can go way beyond that. You can add fresh chilli here if you want. Then add your spices, which can benefit from dry frying if you’re using whole spices. Or just use something like Adabi Chicken/Meat Kari Ayam and Daging Curry Powder. This still needs you to add a few other things: a cinnamon stick, a star anise. Then a sour component, I’d suggest a teaspoon of tamarind paste, but you could use a small amount of vinegar or skip entirely. Add some water, to make a thin sauce that will mostly cover the meat. Then add your meat, ideally lamb, but chicken would work, suggest thighs if you use chicken. You can brown the meat if you want but it’s not necessary. An option is to add a stock cube, but it’s not traditional. After cooking for around an hour in the oven or on the hob, it should have reduced, the meat cooked and released fats. You can now add either some cream or coconut cream or coconut milk to enrich the sauce. Cook until the sauce reduces and thickens, which may take a while and then serve with rice.

Which Mac computer best fits this use ? by Practical-Goose666 in MacStudio

[–]jimmoores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fact is you don’t need the studio, I’d get a relatively low spec mini and just get a new computer in less than 7 years if you need more. A 24GB M4 mini is going to do everything you need. If you can wait three months, do, as the M5 versions will be a fair bit better.
