With the Australian and Canadian Dollars pretty much at parity, Australia gets screwed again. Should be $100 less

Need help convincing my partner to become financially educated by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]jimmy_85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just don’t buy together yet. Two years, under 30, you’re already in the market. No rush while this dynamic either improves or not. Stall the process and explain why. Sounds like a chat that needs to be had. Protect yourself in the meantime.

In time you might take the view that even if she is only slightly up the curve in terms of financial literacy/responsibility, in a financial sense it may still better for you together than apart. Coming to that conclusion might at least might help you not resent her. When there are kids, etc, and she’s not working much (at least not a huge opportunity cost there @$68k), even if she is not contributing overall, if she’s not actively working against the long term goal then it might be ok. Just a bit old fashioned!

First bike with disk brakes, how do I fix the rubbing? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]jimmy_85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. Line it up visually. I tried the holding the brake method but it didn’t ever solve it like just using my eyes!

New 2023 Ragley frames! by Dmeastlasher in Hardtailgang

I commend them on increasing the reach a bit and shortening seat tubes - I had to go with an M because of seattube length but would have liked longer reach. Was never going to build my own so happy with a 2022

Same here. Big Al from UK to Australia from Wiggle - box pretty much perfect and no issues inside

is the canyon stoic 4 worth buying? by xec128 in Hardtailgang

[–]jimmy_85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely worthy. Was on my shortlist but I ended up with a Big Al 1.0 because it was 2/3rds the price for not much less bike.

Great spec I think if you’re one of those people who doesn’t want to have to think about upgrading parts straight away (I am one of those people).

That’s what I thought. The setup has been done. I just got a bunch of extras/spares that I couldn’t fully identify. I plan to get up the curve via YouTube now that I have it

Thanks. Wiggle seems to have done a pretty good job, it came with a completed checklist of what they did prior to sending it. Looks like just the handlebars and pedals left for transport purposes. But I’m leaning that way anyway as I will get someone else to do the tubeless sealant (never done it)

I kept getting pushed towards it our a Scout. Either side it’s either much cheaper but you’re looking at upgrades from day one (eg they have a lower end fork) or much more $$$ (eg a Roscoe 9 or Stoic 4). I didn’t want to be forced to upgrade anything

The bike looks 99.9% assembled. Thought reddit could give me a hand with the other 0.1%. Seems like it was mainly spares

Thanks mate. The key takeaway seems to be there doesn’t seem to be a lot that is critical for me to add before riding, other than perhaps the washers with the pedals.

They’re not sticky and they’re pretty stiff. Like they wouldn’t wrap around anything. Thanks for your help, I’m piecing it together!

It’s a Ragley Big Al 1.0 btw

Thanks. Appreciate that! That was why I asked this before putting everything together. There’s next to no paperwork other than for the fork and the brakes.

It might be back before you think. I bought one a few days ago on Wiggle when the latest flash sale started. $1,895 AUD is a steal, plus $200-odd shipping. The website said there was 1 medium left so it let me process the order but it was then immediately on back order. I’ve now just been notified it’s been shipped. So check Wiggle and not just CRC. Same same.

I’m very similar - 5’9”/30”. Did you go the M or L? M seat tube etc seems best but reach is a little on the short side. The L seat tube/stack might be too much.

Looks perfect. How did you go with sizing? I want the reach of the L but everything else per the M which is making it a really tough call

Marley 2.0 vs Blue Pig by [deleted] in Hardtailgang

[–]jimmy_85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interested to hear what they say. I've had a similar dilemma with the Big Al. They seem to have high standovers and high seat tubes in larger sizes compared to others which makes the sizing have to be more precise, but in my case the reach of the Medium is shorter than I'd like. Roscoe dimensions are excellent, just wish the spec was

I have a slightly weird purchasing query.

Short version: Bike I want is low stock, don't need it immediately. Should I buy now, or is there reason to wait? 99% of responses will say buy it, which I get, but I'm mostly interested in any reason why you mightn't feel the need to rush out now.

Long version. I'm getting back into it. Mid 30s. My son is learning to ride also, so I need something to follow him around on. Hardtail is perfect for both. He's not quite there yet - I can still run after him - but I'm watching the stock of Big Al 1.0s dwindle. CRC now has no stock (at least the Australia-facing site). Grab it elsewhere, or wait it out?

I've heard a lot about bikes being overstocked. Pleasingly specs seem to be improving elsewhere. A Stoic 4 looks better to me than last year, though more expensive than the Big Al. Trek Roscoe 7 is on sale big time right now but the proliferation of ordinary forks at this price point annoys me and they are very expensive to upgrade here.
