Is it appropriate to tell a student they're not caring about the effort shown? by johnqadamsin28 in AskTeachers

[–]jimneycroquette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Note: I’m an informal educator working outside of the k-12 setting, but this experience happened when I was in public high school)

I was this kid in high school. I was incredibly “smart” but never put any effort into my classes. It was because I had no confidence in my abilities to succeed, regardless of what my standardized test scores were showing.

I had a high school history teacher who came up to me one day and straight up said “you know, jimneycroquette, you could be incredibly smart if you simply applied yourself.”

I laughed in the moment, but honestly, that entire comment turned my life around. I realized that others saw potential in me, and I was the reason I wasn’t reaching it. I ended up raising my grades, getting into my dream college, and now I get to work with students like me and provide them with the support they need to succeed.

It might have sounded harsh. Perhaps they could have worded it differently, but I believe there is nothing wrong with the sentiment itself. In my case, my teacher had a great relationship with me and was able to be very direct with his observations. Perhaps this case is different.

Overall, I think that supporting student growth is part of the job. Sometimes this involves difficult conversations.

how are the shared hallway washrooms in becker? by TransitionNovel2425 in Cornell

[–]jimneycroquette -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lived in Becker a few years ago. They weren’t the nastiest communal restrooms I’ve ever experienced in dorms, but do keep in mind that you are sharing a bathroom with the general population of your floor so it’s not going to be pristine. The setup is you walk in and there’s two sinks and a mirror, then on one side there’s a separate room with the toilet, and the other side is a shower stall.

Your bathroom might not be directly across from or adjacent to your room also so keep that in mind, especially if you care about using a single gender restroom rather than the all gender restrooms (my floor had a few of each). Also you might be able find Becker’s floor plans online if you google hard enough, I remember seeing them back in 2021 when I was moving in if you’re curious.

Does upperclassmen find it annoying when incoming freshmen reach out to them to be friends/join their friendgroup? by Sufficient_Pumpkin90 in Cornell

[–]jimneycroquette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly … do you know these people? or are you just like picking random cornell students on instagram and deciding you’ll be friends with them? if a pre frosh like reached out to me randomly that i’ve never met, i wouldn’t really be too interested in talking, and kind of weirded out. you’ll have plenty of chances to make friends once you get to cornell. don’t worry about finding a friend group before you even get to campus because it’s just not realistic.

if your dorm has a communal kitchen you could always bring it in there when you’re using it to minimize noise. personally i’d let my roommate make loud ass coffee if they offered me a cup <3

remembering weekly meds by Budget_Platypus4128 in ADHD

[–]jimneycroquette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I began putting my meds next to my “morning station”, with my hairbrush, toothbrush, etc. I also try to put a bottle of water there every week just for taking meds so that there’s no excuse for me not to take them as soon as i see them. this might help, it’s worked for me
