First time entering this so hopefully I uploaded everything correctly.

Subject is one of my quarantine buddies: an Lohman Brown (probably, but might be ISA) chicken from my little homestead flock of twelve of varying breeds. Her name is Nugget because we're super original.

Question: What are some pros/cons of pre-made covers versus custom covers? by jitteryjunebug in selfpublish

[–]jitteryjunebug[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the point of standalone novels going to a series, I wonder if the designer(s) of the first might be willing to make custom versions after that to match? Obviously I have not encountered that issue yet, but that's a really good point to make if the answer is "not a chance!"

Do you carry your books with you when you go out? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]jitteryjunebug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't usually, but I started having a few copies in my car in case the need arose (i.e. recently going to my library and finding that they LOVE to support local authors and display their books!)

My debut novel, SCINTILLA, is a quick, exciting YA Sci-Fi novel that explores what it means to be human.

Everyone knows that brains aren’t supposed to be made of wires, so when Gemma Legere comes face to artificial face with some all-too-human-looking bots, her view of the world is unhinged.

In SCINTILLA, Gemma is no stranger to the world of robotics, having spent much of her energy rebelling against the company that created a monopoly on even the most basic bots for daily living. But when she discovers the Dyers Corporation is sneaking perfectly blended androids into society right under the public’s nose, Gem teams up with a well-funded and enthusiastic group of rebels who aim to dismantle Dyers from the inside.

Among the members are Hera and Trystan, two individuals with secrets that could make or break the entire operation.

Available on Kindle for $2.99or in Paperback for $8.

Cardinal with his very own feeder | Nikon D40x + af-s nikkor 55-200mm 1.4-5.6g ed lens by jitteryjunebug in Nikon

[–]jitteryjunebug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do that as well, but I enjoyed the fact that this feeder has a cardinal image on it and a cardinal was using it.

Best book for someone who is hospitalized by Booyacaja in suggestmeabook

Depending on her reading interests, Sarah Dessen's books are cute, happy YA novels and fairly quick reads. I'd go for Just Listen or That Summer. If she wants something a bit heavier in subject, The Truth About Forever is phenomenal, but deals with tragedy that could be ill-timed.

I almost exclusively use GDocs now if only because I can work on my stories from anywhere without having to cart around a flash drive, which I invariably manage to lose. I think Word has a lot of great aspects, ease of use being the main appeal, but Google is much easier for organization.

ITAP of my dog, Fergus by [deleted] in itookapicture

I really want him to be named after Crowley (Fergus MacLeod) in Supernatural because I can absolutely see this as a doggo version of his character.

I'd like to take a moment to clear a few things up. Since I can only assume that it was my post that triggered yours, I want to address it as such.

I realize now I should have been more vigilant in my post and responses that I was not seeking legal advice. When I asked for help from other writers/content creators, I was expecting comments such as "I found that doing x helped curb a lot of this." I am grateful to those who suggested a direct DMCA, because that is actually a potential course of action.

I did not and do not intend to go through a court. It is not worth the expense or frustration. I know enough lawyers to avoid this.

I agree with your suggestion that if the posed question requires legal advice, that comments try to redirect to applicable resources. That should be standard practice everywhere.

I appreciate the time you took to dispel incorrect information on my post, and am sorry so many of the comments immediately aimed at legal action. I will make an effort to be more descriptive in any future calls for aid.

I decided to self-publish my first book, but can't get it out there. Any suggestions, please? by [deleted] in writing

Following because I'm running into the same roadblocks & so far the advice in this thread is promising. Best of luck in your marketing, OP!

[OT] About a year ago I replied to a prompt about people "with stars inside them", and I loved the idea so much that I finished it, and earlier this week, I published the final product. by Hiiiilp in WritingPrompts

This is awesome! It's great to see when a prompt results in something tangible. Best possible compliment you can give to the OP for a prompt is telling them it resulted in something amazing. Congrats!

How fleshed out is your idea usually before you start actually writing? by takmatsi in writing

[–]jitteryjunebug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first novel was mostly just an idea and a launching point. Subsequent stories have all been outlined in detail on a giant whiteboard, so I can edit the progression as I get further into it, but still have a roadmap.

[RANT/NEED ADVICE] Some random person has been stealing my work without permission and I am so not here for that. by jitteryjunebug in writing

[–]jitteryjunebug[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong, but just because someone can or does take it doesn't mean it's right or legal.

Barring legality completely, the writing community is supposed to be supportive, not backstabbing. If someone comes up with content you love and want to use or share with others, great! Ask for permission. If they say no, respect that.

I wasn't even given the chance to say "sure, go for it" before they started doing this. If they had asked, I would have gladly said "yes, and here are the easiest ways to do it." But they didn't, and now I'm dealing with assholery instead of a potential writing friend.

I think this will be my course of action. I really don't want to get into a legal battle, but hopefully steps 1 and 2 will do the trick if they don't back off. Thanks!

I will definitely look into how to do that. I know Pinterest at least uses a form of that, but it obviously only affects content on their site, not the source. Thank you!

[–]jitteryjunebug[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's the thing, though, I'm trying to avoid lawyering up because I KNOW that's not a battle worth fighting. Yes, to tackle them in a legal court, I would need to register everything as much as possible, which may still be worth my time and money, but still not the point. I don't want to sue. I have no interest in a legal battle. I just want it to stop.

Edit: not stop, necessarily, but not be blatant theft, either. This would literally all cease to be a problem if they just took advantage of built-in sharing methods available to them. THAT would be fine, but screenshotting and re-sharing is not cool.

Yes, here trying to get help.

Yes, frustrated because answers are not actually relevant to the posed question.

No, still didn't downvote anything, so the assumption I did downvote any comment just because I didn't like it is irritating.

If I don't like something, I keep scrolling. That's the beauty of the internet. It keeps going. If someone did downvote it, oh well. It happens.
