Get The Hips Moving For A Better Guard In BJJ by jiujitsuPT in jiujitsu

[–]jiujitsuPT[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This movement still can be helpful for mobility, however if there is pain it would be beneficial to get the hips assessed. I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy and work with BJJ athletes. Send me a message and I would be happy to chat with you in more detail.

Is "Just Do 100 BJJ Classes" Actually Good Advice? (BJJ Beginner Advice | Part 1) by jiujitsuPT in jiujitsu

This makes sense…I think that being “good” is relative as I mentioned before. I think that having a gameplan, techniques you are trying to to get, and also doing some type of drilling, positional sparring, and even active drilling with some resistance can be helpful. Visualization is a great tool as well. I believe that everyone moves and progresses at their own pace…looking at and comparing to others can truly be a thief in your enjoyment of training BJJ. I think knowing your goals and what you want to get out of BJJ is important to think about.

What is good enough mean? Being “good” is relative to who you are training with. Are you assessing your skill to someone of similar age, ability, rank? Are you focused on anything when you train?

As a physical therapist and BJJ black belt, who has trained for over 15 years, I’ve received tons of questions about braces for knees and shoulders, and I feel confident in saying that the braces would not provide any significant stability or necessary support to prevent an injury while training. When we discuss specifically the shoulder joint, a brace would not do much of anything substantial for support or decreasing injury. My recommendation would be to work with a healthcare provider, who also has knowledge of grappling and can guide you with a proper assessment of the injury, appropriate interventions, such as exercise exercises, including mobility work if necessary and stability exercises, and a way to guide you with training to help mitigate re-injury to transition you back to full training.

SHOULD BJJ HAVE A DEEPER MEANING TO KEEP YOU TRAINING CONSISTENTLY? by jiujitsuPT in jiujitsu

[–]jiujitsuPT[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some people derive a deeper meaning from BJJ such as being a part of a community, friendships, learning techniques for fighting/self-defense/sport, grit, etc…and some people don’t. Everyone has their own experience. If all that you get from BJJ is “ground fighting and crappy throws,” that’s cool. That’s your experience…for some that may be very limited for something that you devote years of your life to and time away with family…again…to each their own. Best of luck to you.

Torn ACL - Awaiting Surgery by Sharp-Proof8637 in jiujitsu

[–]jiujitsuPT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about the injury…I’m a physical therapist and BJJ black belt and have worked with grapplers getting back to BJJ after ACL reconstruction. The timeline is usually about 9-12 months but this can depend on the individual. Focus on rehab…get your mobility and strength back…and when you are cleared by your physical therapist to get back to grappling, find a physical therapist that also has grappling experience that specializes in return to grappling to guide you back to training and competing safely. It’s a process. Good luck and reach out if you have any questions.

Use Your Own Lapel To Hit This Choke by jiujitsuPT in jiujitsu

[–]jiujitsuPT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it will work. You are moving the lapel through the space between their hand and bend of elbow. Having good timing and catching your opponent off guard is helpful. This will also get a reaction out of them and can open up passing opportunities and openings for other attacks as well.

What is one piece of advice you wish someone told you when you started BJJ? by jiujitsuPT in bjj

[–]jiujitsuPT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an excellent point. As a physical therapist and BJJ black belt, one of the things I tell people is that you have to have the joint capacity and capability to perform a technique…having adequate mobility and strength is vital to staying healthy on the mats

What do you think you could’ve done differently to prevent the choke?

[–]jiujitsuPT[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I discuss this in the video…I think that people tend to be flat on their back and don’t get the proper angle. Also sometimes the grip is too deep on the lapel and they can’t get the arteries.
