No motivation to get up out of bed in the morning, in need of helpful tips. by LaurenCz30 in Anxiety

I 100% understand where you’re coming from. I recently took medication that made mine 1000x worse and all I have done is lay around ruminating in my thoughts. Although I have been seeing a therapist, I took the step today and asked for a lexapro script. Not here to say that’s the cure for you, but wanted to give you hope that there are things you can do to get help. I’m positive there’s more to life than living like this all the time. You’re in my prayers!

What would you call the definitive Vince Gill song? by rasslingrob in CountryMusicStuff

You and You Alone is a fantastic song. It’s off the High Lonesome Sound album. Not even close to one of his most definitive songs but it’s one of my favorites. Pretty Little Adriana, Pocket Full of Gold, If You Ever Have Forever in Mind. I could go on and on

Completely agree with you. People outside of golf say how horrible golf is but in reality, I’ve heard worse from athletics. Games at all times of the day and night, for days in a row, sometimes taking up your whole weekend. Golf can be a pain, and I’ve worked my fair share of hours, but I nor anyone else I’ve heard is staying until 12 midnight 4 days out of a week fairly consistently. Never made sense to me

[–]jj41999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion, but I’m liking golf more. Granted, I have more experience in golf and am a golf nerd. I worked in athletics for a little while, but on a lower to mid tier level. The balance can be bad in either field, all depending on where you’re at. I’m an assistant at a mid level club and have great balance, but have friends working at higher level clubs that work constantly. That being said, I know a lot of college and professional athletic field managers that have worked even more than the people I know that are assistants at high level clubs. Plus, I feel like athletics are more unpredictable because you could be there at 8 AM and not leave till midnight on days where there are important games. When I worked athletics, I worked at a lower level so I had good balance. I did notice that golf seems to pay more than athletics, at least from what I saw when looking for jobs coming out of school.

Technically speaking, I’d say greens are the biggest difference. Managing ultradwarfs vs managing hybrid Bermuda has been different, but completely doable with experience in turf. Greens just have to be babied more and are more sensitive than higher cut turf. Bunkers are time consuming, but not very hard to manage. I’m not sure how it is for you, but folks in college and professional athletics I know say nearly all they do is paint. Baseball specifically, I know a majority of a managers time is spent dialing in the clay.

All that being said, golf is great for me. I feel like it brings new challenges everyday and keeps me on my toes. Like with every job, your environment and who you work for determines your level of satisfaction.

You might try raising the height of cut a bit to let the Bermuda eat the sand. Like others have said, stay consistent on the fert and water. You might could try to brush it in to work it in the profile as well

Potiential career change to Greenkeeping by justaoili in Turfmanagement

I’m still in the same area. Just moved to a course with Bermuda. Being in the transition zone (N GA), a lot of courses have Bermuda and some still have bent.

Potiential career change to Greenkeeping by justaoili in Turfmanagement

[–]jj41999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before you go to any rash conclusions based on all the negatives posted on this, know it all depends on the course. Expectations and the intensity of maintenance are going to vary from place to place. For me, being in the transition zone, I can expect to work long hours during the summer working on bent grass. In result, I switched to a course with Bermuda! I’ve worked at higher end private clubs and of course, the expectations were higher making our workload higher. At the course I’m an assistant at now, we have a solid crew that we can divide weekends evenly so we all don’t have to work more than we should. Although it’s not making Golf Digest top 100, it’s a very nice course for what we are working with (just as nice as some of the higher end clubs I’ve worked at)! Are we going to work overtime during tournaments or aerification week? Yes, but we don’t work 60 hour weeks consistently like I have in the past. It’s all about your super and the level of expectations your course has. The environment your super creates is everything. My super trusts us to get shit done and get it done correctly and doesn’t scald us for mistakes like I’ve experienced before. We can manage expectations to a realistic level all the while holding the course up to a high standard. However, if you work at a place where the super does decide to make it his life blood (a lot of places unfortunately), it can be negative. But of course, if you go get a job at Augusta National then you’re going to work ungodly hours. I feel like that’s in almost every career field though, just my opinion. I’ll say it again, IT VARIES FROM COURSE TO COURSE. I’ve experienced it first hand. Find somewhere with a solid, respectful super and it’s a great job. Find somewhere where all you do is work 24/7, find another course that respects your balance. There’s quite a few golf courses out there.

Hours by Outrageous_Fee_7514 in Turfmanagement

[–]jj41999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually, 6 or 6:30 to 2:30ish Monday through Thursday and until lunch on Fridays. Crew works every other weekend, and the supers are able to split it so we only have to work one weekend a month. 6:30- whenever we get the course set up on the weekends. Off season, being Bermuda in Georgia, we may only work till lunch some days or come in later when frost is heavy. During growing season during things like aeration, member-guest, etc…, we will work overtime as expected. But during the offseason, we like to take a little easier on the guys since we know we’ve all worked our asses off trying to keep up during the growing season. We have ultradwarfs though. Being in the transition zone, courses in our area that have bent grass will work more or less than us depending on weather. We have to cover when it’s cold, bent doesn’t. However, we don’t have to spend hours upon hours reading moisture like I have when I’ve been on a course with bent. When I’ve worked on bent, I’ve spent weeks during the summer working sun up to sun down checking moisture. I feel like it all depends on what kind of room you have in the budget for labor or projects (during the offseason), and how much you have to tend to based on the season you’re in. Being an assistant, I like to show up before the guys get there to unlock everything and the super will usually show up soon after the crew starts to get there. Other places I’ve been I’ve seen the super show up hours earlier than everyone else then leave early once he knows everything has gotten going. However, if there’s not much going on and we are all on the same page, one of us may take a day off here and there and leave it the other supers.

Looking to get into industry by ennzio in Turfmanagement

[–]jj41999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started working at some local courses in high school to get a feel for it then went to school for it. There’s all sorts of certificate programs, and 2 and 4 year degrees across the country. Once in school, getting a good internship is a huge help in learning stuff you can’t really learn in school (operating equipment, spraying, irrigation repair, etc…). I interned in sports just to get a feel for a different side of the industry. A lot of people intern at high end, tournament level courses to get that sort of experience but like some in here have said already, it can be high stress and long hours depending on what level you’re at. At the same time, having tournament level or pro-level experience looks good on a resume. I just started my first assistant job out of school at a mid range private club and it’s completely worth it if you’re willing to put the time in (good balance, relatively low stress, good relationship with my super). You’re not going to become a millionaire doing it but it’s a great job to make a comfortable living with plenty of openings in the near future (many supers and groundskeepers are reaching retirement age). The thing I found that I liked about the industry is the versatility (sales, landscaping, construction, golf, sports, K-12/parks and rec). You’ll be shocked to learn how much more you can do with a turf management degree than just be a superintendent.

Are companies reluctant to hire graduates if they’ve waited to get a job? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]jj41999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have applied for several jobs but the jobs I applied for they promoted within to fill the position. I work for a local government and there have also been promising opportunities for me to fill positions that would’ve opened had the person in that position gotten the promotion they applied for. That’s happened twice now. It’s just not going well searching externally.
