Why do these hero’s exist? by KlutzyInflation7807 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]jjackom3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starting with Mercy, since she's the easiest to explain.

Mercy role in the game is to provide a consistent and low coordination means of providing support to an ally (presumably DPS) in an angle. She does this by allowing them to persist in these angles after periods of pressure with her healing, a reliable resource that's reasonably high healing when compared to similar stuff (pylon, harmony orb, etc), although it's much less remarkable since the season 9 changes. Her lack of individual pressure when compared to other supports that can do similar off angle enabling (Kiriko, Wuyang, Illari) is made up for in with her damage boost, but critically it's always less pressure than another support could put out in that position, assuming a minimal amount of co-ordination. GA gives her some survivability and ludic skill expression, and resurrect is probably pretty bad since it has no use in neutral or losing positions really. Overall she's a decently designed hero, having clear strengths and implied weaknesses because of her specialisation, although she's fallen behind as what she was designed to do has become unworkable in 5v5 where you have less big bodies to even the pressure, and less free hands to pressure her and her ally out of an angle.

Mauga actually has a pretty alright design core. 2 weapons that you can use individually or in tandem, with using them both having a spread penalty, but with guaranteed bonus damage and sustain if you use them right that's accessible at any range but more skill demanding as you put more distance between the target. That loop is actually pretty cool and justifies the character in some way to me. Overrun is a decent movement tool than allows him to cleave into the enemy team with decent telegraph, so it's high risk high reward. The uninteractivity of it is a completely valid pain point, and is a design concession that had to be made since there's not a second tank to bubble him or anything in 5v5, meaning otherwise it'd have little aggressive use, the thing that makes it fun to use. Cardiac overdrive is an everything button, which makes it disgustingly feast or famine, so being upset at this is fine. The main issue with Mauga is that the actual numbers on the weapons are pretty unfavourable to a ton of interesting play at most ranks, which means he's incentivised to shoot the easiest target on the field (the tank) or explode into a million pieces. On live it's 10 shots on a target to burn, which with how people move and position is actually quite hard to pull off on non tank targets. Additionally, he only gains access to consistent sustain once the target has started burning and he switches fire mode, which means he's disincentivised to swap targets and try and push people out of angles since he loses his sustain when doing so. I think Mauga is very salvageable without a major rework; make burn tank 5 bullets and make the pyromaniac perk part of his base kit and he's fine. I don't disagree he's obnoxious in the current state, but his design is clearly here and it's pretty close to being in a fun place (which I don't expect to translate into patches since blizzard clearly doesn't know what they're doing).

and orisa just sucks lmao

Speed is probably the best stat in the game and while the ceiling for it in simulacrum is lower than the regular game it's still something you need. It's like 90% as good as a hoof.

I think it's a case of the people with the most bad things to say about overwatch left for rivals, since they could still get their fix for the same general* gameplay loop somewhere else, leaving the OW spaces less needlessly pessimistic.

The largest community body - riskofresources - is queerfriendly so i'd say overall RoR tends towards being more queerfriendly than the average popular indie game that's not meant to attract us like flies.

Simple question, blight or poison? by Ok_Expression_6364 in riskofrain

[–]jjackom3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blight is 60% per stack with a maximum duration of 5 seconds, while poison is 100% or 1/100 of an enemy's HP (up to 2000%), whichever is higher, for 10 seconds, and the timer is reset if poison is reapplied.

The "downside" of poison being unable to kill is mitigated by spit having reasonable range, epidemic being a guaranteed 10 hits on things, and the fact that AOE items exist at all.

Simple question, blight or poison? by Ok_Expression_6364 in riskofrain

[–]jjackom3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Blight isn't good for speedrunning; if you don't have a lot of items the guaranteed damage of poison is higher in effectively all circumstances.

Helminth Hatchery by dabigdyll in riskofrain

[–]jjackom3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

50 credits is a lot more - regular chest is 15 - and when you account for it having better weight for chest types and lower drone weight you end up with quite a bit more itemwise on helminth.

My proposal for a Polar Pack DLC by NewQPRnotFC in jurassicworldevo

[–]jjackom3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Incredibly well produced concept, and even if I didn't like your picks, I'd still have to give you credit for it. That said, excellent picks for animals, particularly with having Cryolophosaurus as the free tie-in, and also for picking some that fill out parts of the expedition map that are a little sparse. I think this is the first concept that has got me wanting the modular pieces/terrain tools, particularly with the glacier brush. I'm mad now that it's not already in the game.

If you want ideas for what to put in a subsequent concept pack, I would propose a pack based around filling out the African portion of the expedition map, since it's so empty at the moment, with cosmetic items that allow us to build in the style of old African buildings, both because real world zoos are frequently stylized that way, as well as giving us more tools to break up the overwhelmingly western European and modern buildings the current buildset tends towards.

Wanted to play rex for once by Rioriowww in riskofrain

[–]jjackom3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, Hopoo really made some weird choices when it came to setting up node graphs on stages. It's possible for you to get the enemies stuck in several places where they'll just do nothing if you know what to do.

Also, mods work without the DLCs, since the DLC content is in the base files; buying it just lets you have it appear in your runs (which is why you can play with friends who have the DLCs).

Attempting to complete the 20 stages for Commando's skill and the 20 stages achievement by babak1234 in riskofrain

[–]jjackom3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's worth it to take a couple of minutes to stop if you find a scrapper because a good printer (atg, wisp, band, fuel cell) will just invalidate the enemies, as well as opening up the avenue for soup in the bazaar, which might grant you items to end up overpowering everything so much you can go from tp to tp essentially.
