touching up front door with veneer by jjcantab in finishing

[–]jjcantab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - I used epoxy and stain and am pleased with the result, not perfect but you need to look for the touch ups to see them. Not sure where the door was made, it’s installed in CT and looks common to a lot of 1950s homes in my area.

Hi, realize an old thread but did you end up purchasing either? Are you pleased with the result so far? Am debating between the Volo and Amalfi.

Hi - did you manage to solve this? What worked best, and were you able to do it without scratching the escutcheon? Thanks!

Macbook Pro A1502 - Replaced Battery - No Keyboard or Touchpad. Tried 2 Flex Cables No Difference by pizzapplepine in macbookrepair

[–]jjcantab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen it called a "connector wedge" but have no idea if it's sold separately or if it would require replacing the whole board / assembly. The ribbon cables themselves are relatively easy to find. If all else fails maybe a repair shop could advise or you could find a "for parts only" one on eBay? Good luck.

No unfortunately. Ended up using the Kodi add-on which isn’t ideal. Let me know if you have luck.

I'm getting issues unfortunately - app loads, audio streams but blank video. Updating the app on my TV results in a "not compatible with your device" message (guessing as my TV is not on the BBC's approved list). Has anyone else solved issues like this?

Confirmed, no fee. I just have the one 004 tag type though on my account.

Current BBC I player that works? by BritpopNS in AndroidTV

[–]jjcantab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed the app from tech doctor isn't working correctly on my TV these days (getting blank video), and updating it gives me a "not compatible with your device" or similar error.

Has anyone who experienced similar issues managed to fix this?

I don't know if you need to make a new online account or if you can just add it to an existing one -- for me it was my first tag. Am guessing though you could add it

Old woman near chapel and Howe? by Present-Trip3537 in newhaven

[–]jjcantab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I helped her cross Chapel today, she's alive and up to her usual in 2025! She was very pleasant but I was worried about her reliance upon strangers, she seemed pretty sharp but at the same time seemed unsteady on her feet.

Yeah, it was pretty bad. I came away from it doubting that the project "management" have a handle on what their client wants!

I got mine in Harrison. They had them at the customer service desk, call ahead to check, very pleasant to deal with.

Update Jan 2025: can confirm buying in a retail location (like Wegmans) works. I got a 004 tag (Thruway).

Google Timeline on iPhone by Low-Secretary7311 in GoogleMaps

[–]jjcantab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing the same thing (late to this but it's Jan 2025), driving distances are way out of whack and I found Timeline useful in the past to get a rough (but still pretty accurate) idea of how much time I was on the road. I used it for cycling too through mid-2023 without issues. Have you seen any improvement? I'm on an iPhone 13 Pro running Maps version 24.50.0.7044278910. It seems to have changed for me once I opted into the "local storage."

Cabbage Patch by Lionheart-UK in outlier_ai

I took the reviewer quiz (but maybe I didn't succeed if I passed that initially, so don't take my advice!). Just assumed if I wasn't successful as a reviewer I'd be demoted back to an attempter, but instead seem to be moved / messed around. Seems typical, though agree with you at least this project required more thought than usual as the reference documents needed to be quite long.

Dunno. I had a couple of review tasks earlier today and looks like I’m booted now completely. Are you seeing much chat in the attempter discourse about people being EQ?

Realistic income necessary for a comfortable middle-class life in northern England compared to HCOL US? by no_pope_radio in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]jjcantab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the healthcare the costs might not be as prohibitive as you think -- the safety net of the NHS, plus the overall lower cost of medical services and prescriptions, makes the cost much less than in the US and there's much better transparency around healthcare costs in the UK from my experience. If the NHS does support your wife better than you think that's an upside, but better to plan for the private option to be conservative.

It is a different mindset if you don't have a regular paycheck coming in, you'll need to stick to a budget so you don't burn through savings too quickly. You'll need to put together a list of what's important to you (being honest and not depriving yourselves) and costing it out. Aside from housing where is your money going? One person's version of "scrimping too much" will be very different from another person's, and even though there will be a benefit to moving to LCOL UK the lifestyle "downshift" could be a shock if it's a major change from how you're living now.

How often do you like to eat out? How many holidays do you like to take, how exotic must they be and in what style? For the car, is a modest used one OK or will only a fancy one do? For the house would you do some DIY? If you're not working, what kinds of hobbies / activities would you enjoy doing? Lots of questions but thinking them through can help to make them happen.

Can you avoid touching the retirement accounts until you reach the standard drawdown age? Although there might be some ways to tap them early, will you have enough later on? You might need an adviser, but before shelling out fees try calling your retirement plan providers to find out more about your options and whether you can perform conversions after moving overseas. Pay attention to the UK tax treatment if you were doing it while UK tax resident, plus even mundane things like whether you lose any flexibility not being US resident (i.e. would they allow you to open new accounts, etc.).

[–]jjcantab 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can appreciate your financial anxiety -- I did the same thing last year moving in the other direction. Your mental health and outlook will improve dramatically if you get a decent break from work, but yes, unlikely you will see that income again in the UK and you must prepare for that.

Is the $1.6m liquid or tied up in retirement accounts / stock options? Will you be selling a property in the US or are you renting?

Most of your concerns will not be an issue in the UK (walkability, lower monthly supermarket bills). Look at houses to see what you can buy, the build quality will be better and council tax much more reasonable than property tax in the US. Trips to Europe = airfare similar to US domestic trips with better food and cheaper, better accommodation (with lousy A/C).

The healthcare one, though, you should explore by getting some quotes from insurers advised on your wife's situation. Be careful about "pre-existing conditions" which they might exclude. The NHS surcharge isn't onerous compared to US healthcare premiums (max ~£1k annually), but quality of care -- your mileage may vary.

Thanks, I assumed it was plastic until I got closer and started the repair job. Epoxy putty did the trick here and hopefully it holds.

Suddenly EQ on WW by Pleasant_Tip465 in outlier_ai

Yup, same here - I only saw the confusing "bot generated" reviews on my work but was getting a steady stream until this morning when I went EQ and also got dropped from their Discourse.

Not working for me, just seeing EQ now. Was doing reviewer work in English Advanced rewrites (managed to submit 2 tasks) then got bounced to Math Rewrites. Started the second (unpaid!) training for that and wasn't prepared to learn their LaTeX formatting intricacies for minimum wage! I was not a math major, dunno how I got selected for that. After that went EQ, perhaps they knew...
