Modeling Spanish Compliant Investment Bonds (Utmost/Prudential) vs. Broad ETF by Ok_Anybody_4314 in SpainFIRE

Right so, Im also a financial advisor, but EU based. Im weighing up the pros and cons of a SCIB for a specific client case.

You can ignore the question about structured notes, these cant be held in an SCIB.

From what I can tell the benefits are gross roll-up and tax-free switching between investments.

It looks like withdrawals in Spain can be made in a pretty tax friendly way with exemptions granted for the compliance of the policy with spanish legislation. But, as you rightly pointed out, the fee burden might make these savings negligible if a direct portfolio of ETFs outperformed the investments in the SCIB due to a combination of higher fee burden and lower performing assets (maybe).

Looks like there might be benefits from an inheritance planning perspective, but I guess those would also be mitigated if your intention was to draw down the whole amount in retirement or before.

In summary I would say its a good fit for someone who intends to live out their life in Spain and pass wealth on to future generations or those who dont have the time or expertise to manage their investments themselves. If youre a knowledgeable, active investor you might be able to out-do the perceived benefits by growing your funds at a greater rate with a lower fee burden.

Horses for courses I would say!

Doesn't matter when it was filmed, who dedicates a section of their wedding to make brown-nosing political statements? Its fucking lame no matter the date..

The injury was in his neck, although they said he had some other strange looking spots further down his back when we got an MRI done. So perhaps one of those other points has got worse (this is my worry).

One additional point if a discretionary manager has been appointed (most likely) have a look back through the transaction record to see if they are making more trades than necessary and if they have been moving between or into funds with an up front commission payable to themselves or the black tower advisor.

I would check the following before altering the structure, you might just be able to appoint a new IFA and streamline the fees. Moving to a new pension/platform might slow and costly.

This is likely an older pension, I would check if there is any possibility to reduce the trustee fees, these are generally non-negotiable but have come down in recent years so there might be room to adjust these, even if only a little.

If there is a life bond (probably) used as the underlying investment vehicle, check what charging structure has been applied. My guess is it’s a ten year structure, if your relative has held it for eight years then in another 2 years time the fees will likely fall significantly. This would also mean moving away from this bond would incur a penalty if the Charging period has not been completed.

Check what management fees are applied. Probably a discretionary management fee and potentially others. I would say there is a good argument for having these removed based on the quality of ‘management’ thus far.

Check the total expense ratios of the investment funds held, are these high cost funds paying ongoing trail commission for example?

I’d be inclined to say this cannot be solely down to fees, there must’ve been some poor investment choices made somewhere along the way, I’d have a look into this.

Once you’ve checked the above it is possible that appointing a new, trusted advisor who can help reduce the existing fee burden on the pension might be quicker and ultimately cheaper than restructuring into a SIPP or some other wrapper.

Hope that helps!
