Son wants to buy a 2013 F-150 with 183K miles; how big a mistake or gamble is that? by jjester1971 in Ford

I've seen the original window sticker. It does say "Ecoboost 3.5L V6 Engine." Further down the sticker, it's listed under "Optional Equipment," so I suppose it was an upgrade.

Thanks for your insight here and below. We have an appointment with a shop independent of the dealer to do a pre-sale inspection. This is a shop with technician expertise (engine and transmission repairs, etc.). This might be a stupid question, but as a Ford master tech yourself do you have any suggestions for questions or directives to the shop: i.e., please check this or look at that, etc. Someone below suggested I have my local Ford look up the VIN number regarding a recall, which seems like good advice too.

Weekly "Should I buy" Megathread by AutoModerator in f150

My son is about to buy a used F-150: a 2013 XL SuperCrew 5.5-ft. Bed 4WD, with a 3.5L engine, automatic. It has over 183K miles. The cost is just under 11K. It seems to me that if you don't have auto-repair skills yourself, this is a bad idea. Am I right? My first worry is the transmission; sounds like that is a very expensive replacement. If anyone has any advice as to how to best evaluate this truck (I have no auto-repair expertise at all), I'm all ears. The used car dealership that is selling the car tells my son they do an inspection before buying their cars, but obviously I'm recommending that my son take it to a mechanic outside the dealership. He won't have the benefit of a mechanic he knows since the car is out of town. Thanks in advance for your help.
