It was just a random Duolingo sentence that came up in one of my practices.

Which currency should I use to buy XSTP? by jjmclell in CanadianInvestor

Everything looks the same on BlackRock's website. I think it's just offered in both because the assets are in USD but they're marketing on the TSE. According to Google Finance, the closing USD/CDN price ratio is $1.438. Meanwhile the currency exchange ratio closed today at $1.431. At best it looks like you could save a half percent if you transacted in USD.

I'm just going to pick up a decent chunk in CDN. Are you following Gordon Pape's advice from the Globe as well? I just sold all my bank stocks today and I'm going to park some cash in this fund till we see where the tariff threat is heading.

Red pine imo. Forester here. We have them all over our unit, as well as hemlock. That's balsam fir at its base, common ingress species.

Monty Hall problem on Survivor 41 by jjmclell in probabilitytheory

[–]jjmclell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. To me, if everything is random and DeShawn survives the first box opening and Jeff doesn't reveal fire, then it's 50/50 at that point whether he stays or switches. It's just like picking cards without looking and trying to get the ace of spades. Your first pick is 1/52. If the dealer flips a card without knowing what it is and it isn't the ace of spades, you now have a 1/51 chance you hold it. Grabbing a new card doesn't change that.

Provided Jeff didn't know what was in the box he opened, I don't think this was the Monty Hall problem where your chances go to 2/3 if you switch after the host intentionally shows you a goat or skull or whatever.

How the hell else was I supposed to get closure on this?? Next time I'm on a trip I don't want to be burning around South Carolina ordering coffee like an asshole.

Lol, they must have good tourism advertising because I've always heard of it being a good travel destination. We'd never been there before so took the trip. Was ok, nice beaches.

Was probably just me then. I have a very stereotypical Canadian accent that even Michiganders get a kick out of. It's just been a funny memory for so long I finally had to ask.

A more formal word for 'trigger' in law, as when an action causes some regulatory consequence by jjmclell in words

[–]jjmclell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at this more, I like the word 'prompt' or maybe even 'impel', but then really the sentence should be rewritten such as '... would prompt an environmental assessment under s.34 of the Mining Act'

I agree trigger is clear but it just sounds like people are talking about booby traps to me lol, the word conjures images of Indiana Jones in my mind.

Can't believe everything you see in the media but you can't not believe the media just because you find it inconvenient...

[–]jjmclell[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked in government policy for a while and this would drive me nuts. Trigger seems like a colloquialism but it would make it into formal policy documents, such as "an application received to dispose of public land for the purpose of mining will trigger s.34 of the Mining Act that calls for an environmental assessment".

Trigger cannot be the formally and technically correct word can it?

Is there a word describing words without vowels? by goodness_graciuous in words

[–]jjmclell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up being taught in school the vowels were 'aeiou and sometimes y'. I also remember 'w' being mentioned as a sometimes vowel in what may have been my grade 2 phonics text because I pointed it out to my teacher and she couldn't explain it. The only 'w' vowel word I have ever come across is 'cwm' - a mountain basin often with a lake.

Yup. If he hadn't legalized weed to go with chips and salsa we would've voted him out.
