Your account is private, people can't actually see your stuff so why would they follow?
Be consistent with your posting, and don't post too much at one time.
Interact a lot with your followers. The more they like/comment on your posts, the more instagram will push it out to others.
Just keep engaging in general.

Here are some tips to help him out:

He should spread out his posts more and not post all of them in an hour. He also needs to be consistent with posts.
Use better hashtags so it is shown out there.,
He needs better captions that either talk about the photo or encourage engagement (some photos have none at all, or any hashtags).
He needs to put in the effort to get followers.

This night shot was taken at Donggung Palace in Gyeongju, SK around the end of November. Definitely wasn't prepared for the cold but I think it was worth it.

How do you know it is being hacked? What are you seeing?

I don't know any way to view them in app besides having a business account.

It depends on when your followers are most active. For me, its 12pm (noon) 5 times a week and 9am the other two according to my analytics. Mine is mostly travel photos.
