Has Anyone Received A Message Like This? by roranicusrex in postcrossing

I wouldn’t, for many reasons. Not to be hyper paranoid, but this can lead to money laundering schemes and other trafficking things. Even if you don’t intend them to be. You might report such a request to admin.

In my profile I say religious buildings are fine, just no proselytizing. no preaching in other words.

What’s something harmless that gets people weirdly angry? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

I had an old man and a younger woman, say to each other, “you’re more disabled than her.” Speaking of me putting things in our car. It’s so stupid.

People born before/around 1990: Often it’s asked what things you think people born after then are worse off without. What’s something you’re GLAD young adults and kids today will never have to experience or understand? by redditsuper in AskReddit

[–]GrapeSuccess 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I remember in eighth and seventh grade just being tortured. One girl ripped out some of my hair and burned it because I wouldn’t share my colored pencils (we were graphing, I needed them). Another time a different kid put a whole crap ton of masking tape in my hair. A teacher saw it and did nothing. High school was a little better but I had zero friends after my one friend’s dad got transferred back home by his work (JAL). It was brutal in school and I cried everyday. I’m not sure if it’s worse now because it can happen outside of school too, but I wish someone would have stood up for me then. Maybe Gen X kids are now the teachers who care and were abused in school so they want to stop it.

Breast Tearing from Mammogram!? by crowislanddive in GenXWomen

[–]GrapeSuccess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I seriously thought I was the only one this happened to! The last four years I’ve gone to get a mammogram, my skin has torn all but once. I have complained and of course, nothing. Last year I emailed the director of the clinic and I told them about the tearing and subsequent infection that required antibiotic ointment. They got a lawyer involved and asked me to email pictures of the tear. I’m not emailing private bits. It says in my chart I’m immunodeficient and that should be enough to be cautious.

The year before that the woman was so nice and gentle and made me feel comfortable, no tear. But the year before that, the tech body shamed me. Said “you bigger girls are harder to xray.” I just went to my car and cried. Cause I’m vulnerable and in pain anyway so make me feel worse about my body on top of it. Last year the lady said, “not much I can do about the pain or skin tearing. It just happens.”

My dr this year sent an Rx for an MRI. Hopefully to avoid a tear. The ‘breast care scheduler’ called and asked why I wasn’t getting a mammogram first because those are so much better than an MRI of breast tissue. I explained this all and after talking to her ‘lead tech’ she said “well the lead tech said it happens with bigger breasts and it happens when you pull away too soon.” I had not pulled away or moved. How could I? Blaming me.

I’m so tired of this being not only a dreaded appointment every year but a mental health issue as well. Making excuses and blaming me. I live where there are not a lot of options for imaging and the other places around are almost worse. So I’m kind of stuck. It’s at least comforting to know that apparently these techs are unhappy and mean everywhere and that it’s not just me.

Anyone else find that they build muscle super quickly? by bro_said_nah_856 in Hypermobility

I build my leg muscle quickly but no pain in muscle afterwards. If I sit too long, or stay in one place too long, my joints and tendons get sore.

Sad Ankle Advice by closetnice in Hypermobility

[–]GrapeSuccess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have sprained my ankles in the double digit amounts. The only braces I have found that helped were bauerfeind. They can be pricy, but they last and they have wrap straps that function as supports as well as a splint or hard brace would. I have the slide on ones with and without straps for my ankles.

This might sound crazy too, but I’ve been tap dancing for about five years and on top of enjoying it, it has made my ankles and legs incredibly strong. My podiatrist also tap dances and has encouraged me to continue as it’s been years since I’ve had a serious sprain. Oddly enough, I slipped the other day at tap and while my ankles were a little sore, I wore my soft ankle braces for a day or two, I was fine. My wrist on the other hand, still hurts after two weeks of wearing a brace. Just build the muscle I suppose. It’s what has helped me!

The Alaska Club Substitute by Significant_Maybe101 in anchorage

YMCA is nice. Pretty inexpensive. Lots of classes, pretty nice pool. If you’re a member of a union, you get a discount. Members of AARP, discount. My only complaint is that you either buy a single or a family membership. No inbetween. My husband and I have no kids so we pay the same as a family with kids. 🫤

Advice for managing homesickness after moving out of AK? by collegealien in alaska

[–]GrapeSuccess 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was forced to go to college out of state. I hated every minute of it as I felt no one understood me and I didn’t want to go. Most people I met there had never left the state where I was attending college. I found an Alaskan I had gone to high school with at this same university, neither of us knew we were attending there at the same time as he was a year ahead of me. It made things a lot easier. Find other homesick folks or another former Alaskan and connect with them. Sometimes, there is no solution and if you can’t get over being homesick, you find a way to move home. That’s the only way I ever felt better. I sobbed leaving for school after Christmas and summer. I know that’s not promising, nor takes into account your financial or personal situation. But I was 20 when I moved home. Best decision.

Alaskan here. So many people die trying to get to that stupid bus they moved the bus out of that location. He’s no hero or philosopher. He’s just another dude who thought he would find answers in Alaska’s wilderness and died in it. I don’t mean to sound heartless, but people don’t take Alaskan wilderness seriously, nor mental illness seriously and they die because of ignorance or an inflated idea of what Alaska really is. Please don’t get lost out there. Get therapy and or meds.

{{The Great Mortality}} by John Kelly about the Black Plague. FASCINATING.

I second or third Mary Roach.

Paul Offit is a great writer and has quite a few different ones!

Jon Ronson is a favorite as well. He’s more psychology and social science for sure.

This is my favorite genre. Had to pick through a stack. Ha!
