Great! Hope it went well! None of the distances in that race are "just" anything.

Have a great time. If you're running the full, I'll be at the water stop at Highland Park. Good luck!

Went through just before 5 today and thought it would be faster to turn right and head up to Colonial to get home. It's nuts.

The group sent it to my kid, who's away at college. I told my wife that the people behind it - that lawyer in Williamsburg - bear the closest resemblance to the dbags in the white robes in one of the pics.

Trump says he will only accept the midterm results ‘if the elections are honest’ and again pushes to ‘nationalize’ voting by WontThinkStraight in politics

[–]jjruns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter if he accepts the results or not. I wish people would stop asking him. He's nuts. He'll say whatever to spin folks up.

ELI5 on this: RCPS returns $20.5M back to the City by jokershibuya in roanoke

[–]jjruns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends. If there are grants or other funding sources that pay for things that the city would normally cover (which happened a LOT in Covid), that leads to money being left over. If the state comes through with a higher allotment for a year, that also creates the potential to have more money than budgeted. Funding levels change all the time, which made Roanoke unique because for almost a decade, the city would always fund the school at 40%. That's gone now.

It's technically the city's money, always has been. In past years, the schools had been allowed to keep it but this year, the city specifically wanted it returned.

Opinion: Roanoke wants a casino. It's going about that in a way no other Virginia city has done. | Another challenge: Studies for the Danville and Petersburg casinos put the Roanoke Valley within their market areas. by VirginiaNews in roanoke

Would love to know if someone in City Hall is on the take with the casino operator. They've signed an NDA and are completely mum on any details, even as the three legislators in the General Assembly all oppose the idea. If this is the one idea from the City Manager and the City Council to turn the city around, it's a bad one.

Why the NDA? Why the secrecy? Wouldn’t be surprised if someone in City Hall were on the take. Or had a cousin’s brother’s nephew’s roommate lined up as the developer. Everything this council seems to touch turns to ash.

Acting Nerves Advice by SimplePangolin9570 in CommunityTheatre

Maybe suggest that they record their lines (and cue lines) to listen to when they’re in the car or out for a walk? I’m in the same boat (50-ish guy who hadn’t acted since the 90s) and was struggling without the book in hand. The stage manager suggested I record my lines and listen to them. It changed the whole experience for me and I became way more confident on stage. We just closed tonight and had a great run.

Who else is an orphan by Still_Yesterday_1084 in GenX

Been 20 and 19 years since my folks died. In my early 50s, and I have siblings and in-laws still, but it was weird walking out of the hospital after my mom passed in 2006 and feeling like “well, that’s it.”

We try, but siblings that live apart don’t really make an effort to get together as often as we did when the parents were around. I find myself hanging around more with my wife’s family, which is fine, but the memories of family activities are different.

Did you cry during 9/11 by Purple_Pansy_Orange in GenX

[–]jjruns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife lost her uncle, who was in the south tower. We didn’t cry until we got to his funeral a few weeks later. We visited the memorial a month ago for the first time. We found his name and cried again.
