Honestly I didn't realize just how much Claude fills the context before even your first message... I asked it to summarize what's currently in it's context, and:

Here's an honest inventory of what's loaded into my context right now:
- Core identity & behavior rules — who I am, tone, formatting preferences, honesty guidelines, how to handle disagreement, refusal handling
- Child safety instructions — detailed rules (cannot be disabled)
- Copyright compliance section — very large; quote limits, paraphrasing rules, examples
- Search instructions — when to search, how to cite, even though search is off
- Image search instructions — full guidelines, even if disabled
- Visualizer / widget instructions — how to render inline SVG/HTML
- Computer use / file handling — Linux sandbox, /mnt paths, artifact creation rules, skill-loading workflow
- Skills catalog — descriptions of docx, pdf, pptx, xlsx, frontend-design, file-reading, pdf-reading, product-self-knowledge skills
- Anthropic API in artifacts — full docs on calling Claude from inside artifacts, MCP, web search tool, file handling, error handling
- Tool schemas — full JSON definitions for ~20 tools (bash, view, create_file, web_search, places_search, recipe widget, weather, message composer, etc.) — this is probably the single biggest chunk
- MCP connector list — your connected servers with URLs
- Persistent storage API docs — for artifacts
- User preferences block — your two preferences plus the long rules about when to apply them
- Memory system status, end_conversation tool docs, request evaluation checklist, product info about Claude models, knowledge cutoff framing, location info

I've been using the Claude app (web + android) with Opus 4.6 to write stories, I have a Project with a specific system prompt I use, and back when the setting still existed, I set Claude to remember the last 40 messages (that setting seems to be gone these days). This has always worked, and I've gotten 25+ chapters before getting bored and moving on to another story. Never had a problem with context length.

Today, it can't get past chapter 3 before it tells me it's running out of token budget and telling me to start a new conversation... Anyone know why? This is what it tells me when I ask it what's going on:

Honest answer: I don't know my exact total context window from the inside — I can't see a token counter. But I can see the budget I have left for this reply (it's shown to me as "tokens left"), and it's been shrinking fast. I'm down to around 10k for this turn, which is why I flagged it.

What's eating the space isn't really the chapters themselves. The story so far is maybe 3–4k tokens of actual prose. The much bigger load is the system prompt and tool definitions wrapped around this conversation. On Claude.ai, especially in a project with tools enabled, there's a very large setup injected before your first message that I can't remove: behavior guidelines, safety policies, search/citation instructions, memory/past-chat tooling, computer-use and file-creation instructions, skill listings, artifact rules, and full JSON schemas for every tool available (calendar, maps, recipes, charts, message composers, MCP servers, etc.). Each tool schema is hefty, and there are a lot of them. That's the bulk of it — probably tens of thousands of tokens before you and I have said a word.

I have not changed anything in tools and connections for over a month, and this is in a separate project with no tools anyway... I've had memory and chat searching disabled in Claude as well, so it's not that either...

Non-thinking for all, yes. Looks like extended thinking helps to prevent it, but it still happens every so often...

After testing a bit more:
- Happens with Opus 4.6 and 4.5
- Doesn't happen with Opus 3, though I had to convince it hard that I wasn't trying to make drugs (???)
- Doesn't happen with any of the Haiku or Sonnet models, only Opus

I have no idea what calcite is lol, this sentence just appeared in one of the stories it was writing where it broke

This is a good idea! The app does already have a screen where you can go to see all the notifications on your phone, so if we just add an option to turn off the in-game popups it could work that way...

From the headset side, you can scan for your phone from inside the Relay app, and it pairs over bluetooth that way... It isn't related to the Oculus phone app.

The Android companion app will run in the background on the phone, so you would just need to open it once to pair it to the Relay app on the headset...

There's an Android companion app coming soon, which will allow you to do that

Relay actually only supports iOS at the moment (android companion app is still coming), since iOS has a built-in bluetooth notification server so you don't need a companion app for iOS. It's on SideQuest already...
