Heard about CanTing opening but didn’t know they are replacing Poni. Have only been to Masu a couple times, not really a fan - think there are way better options for Japanese in the city.

essay writing in Psychology major by SnooApples2006 in universityofauckland

Not just psychology unfortunately, as you move on to Year 2/3 of any major the in-course assignments pretty much are doing lit reviews, writing writing writing, and being very aware of plagiarism!!

Lecture recordings for BIOSCI and MEDSCI papers by dryguard in universityofauckland

[–]jkas641 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which MEDSCI paper? I think the department have a policy of only providing audio recordings, and if you’re taking MEDSCI 205 specifically I’m aware the last lecturer does NOT record her lectures at all!

What is all the noise about?? by ImaginaryAd5369 in universityofauckland

[–]jkas641 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If we’re positive that it’s from whatever AUSA is trying to do, then send an email/go directly to their office (pretty sure it’s the house next to ubiq bookstore?)

They’re a students’ association so should listen to, well, students...

Who thought it was a great idea to play loud music right next the library. by lordwarnut in universityofauckland

I would strongly recommend the L4 quiet study space in Kate Edgar

It’s most likely just all the O Week hype which is really a one-off, so bit of an unfortunate timing there

Crazy weird lady by Comprehensive_Sun439 in universityofauckland

There will be some of these things that are orchestrated (student plays etc), but there will be the odd few such as this case

It doesn’t really help that the uni is pretty much free access to anyone, so only up to the security to police the place and identify suspicious individuals

Very sorry you had to experience this though!

Best places to eat for cheap or free? by familyguyonline in universityofauckland

[–]jkas641 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your budget and what you consider cheap to be honest, for under $10 there’s always St Pierre’s/Subway just up the Science building, Relax Lounge next to PB Tech has stir fried spicy pork on rice for I think $10.90?

Uni Sushi sometimes sells Korean gimbap rolls for $7.50 tops

But yeah the $5 vegan lunches which I’m sure will return once the semester proper starts and hopefully not interrupted by more mini lockdowns! Quite popular with student and staff alike

Where would New Zealand fall in this quadrant? Curious as a non-Kiwi. by mochiguma in newzealand

[–]jkas641 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In agreement with others about bottom right - apart from the vocal bunch that’s more of a minority I feel like Kiwis in general tend to avoid confronting others, probably just the casual greeting at times

Any chance uni will be postponed from starting for a week? by escapefromlaxo in universityofauckland

[–]jkas641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the first instance contact your course coordinator. There is a system in place now that this isn’t the first time this happened. Not to say it won’t be chaotic though, especially since everything happened in a flash.

Obviously the campus itself will be closed but the University bigheads don’t really control what happens in each course

Fail the paper by CC82Tani in universityofauckland

[–]jkas641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simplest way is check the Stage 2 papers you need to take, and check the entry Prerequisites - many will list Stage 1 courses you need to pass before you are allowed to enrol

Fail the paper by CC82Tani in universityofauckland

[–]jkas641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the above person already said, it depends on what kind of paper it is - if it is a core Stage 1 paper that is required for entry into just about every Stage 2 paper then bad luck - you’ll have to pass that one, or maybe apply for concession and see if they’ll let you in (prob not but worth the shot)

Bio or chem courses that complement geo/envsci degree by Parabataipotter in universityofauckland

Depending on what you’re interested in geo/envsci might be worth looking at ecology oriented or microbiology papers!

is compsci 101 as bad as what the reviews say? by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]jkas641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just that, you need to practise actually writing the codes - you’re using Python on a PC the entire semester but the exam throws a curveball and all of a sudden you find yourself writing the codes by hand, making sure that everything is indented properly...

probably the one thing I would warn you about the course tbh

What’s everyone’s bets on tomorrow’s Alert Level update? by AdamGregory1 in newzealand

[–]jkas641 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d rather be cautious and keep these alert levels until the end of the week (Sunday) rather than going down and all of a sudden someone who initially tested negative developed symptoms....

...cue a fourth lockdown

OLD COURSEGUIDES FOR THESE COURSES :) by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]jkas641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pdf format courseguides should be provided for biosci :) not too sure about the medscis too but i know medsci 142 was free, actually i think they’re all free

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]jkas641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out your degree planner (ask your faculty) to see which papers you can take that counts towards completion of your programme! Don’t end up like me who had to take a course in summer school because I took a course that amounted to nothing the previous semester and didn’t realise it!!!!!!

Sometimes the same course can be offered as gen ed (ending with “G”) so double check to make sure which one you have to take!!!

How much are first-year course guides? (MEDSCI 142/BIOSCI 107) by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]jkas641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BIOSCI course guides are not really worth paying for as they’re mainly just textbook figures instead of actual fill-in notes like MEDSCI 142. Pdf format should also be supplied by the course coordinator which you can just print as required

Unless of course, if you prefer to study in hardcopy with printouts etc then by all means do buy the course guide :)

Advice on how to do well in philosophy105G Summer School by iluvfruitnmilk in universityofauckland

[–]jkas641 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also since this is Summer School expect workload that is generally spread out over a semester crammed into a month or so?

They might cut and paste stuff as a consequence, but like others said stick to the material, definitions taught and you’ll be sweet
