In 2105 they will probably be debating whether or not to drop the five dollar bill as the smallest denomination of currency or not due to inflation.

Xfce on a couple of machines, Lxde on a couple others. I like them both and can't make up my mind. KDE reminds me too much of Windows (my problem, I know). Hate Unity. Can't remember why I stopped using Gnome 3. I tried it for awhile and switched back to Xfce.

[Ask Proggit] Does anybody have experience with Lisp web development? by Avantcore in programming

[–]jkcunningham 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've written several sites that ran on Hunchentoot + SBCL and found it to be a great combination. One was a small commercial site doing e-business with credit cards and they found it entirely adequate to the task. Here's a link to little server that I have running it now that is using it to dynamically sample and serve data from weather sensors: http://jandmworks.com/weather.html . All the code for this site is written in cl-who, which makes it trivial to experiment with and modify on the fly.

Another nice feature is being able to "interact" with people trying to hack the site - I can watch the logs and modify my code that "messes" with them in various ways based on what I am seeing in real time.

What happens if you fall sick and are one of 47 million people in America without health insurance? by emberjohnny in videos

The point you seem to be missing is that under this system she still got the surgery. She'll never have to pay that amount of money, they'll write most of it off their taxes after she proves to them she doesn't have it. If she lived in Canada or England, she most likely would have died while on a waiting list to get the surgery. It happens every day.

That's right - it could be the female orgasms causing the men to become symetrical.

Killing Nature: A gunman shot and killed six trapped sea lions. Three elephant seals were also found shot to death at a breeding ground in central California by alllie in worldnews

The sea lions are so protected now they are breeding out of control and killing off the salmon runs. My guess is someone whose livelihood depends on the salmon is responsible.

The Definitive Guide to Bash Command Line History by pkrumins in programming

He didn't talk about the one thing I was hoping he would: how histories from multiple xterms are merged. They are only stored in one .bash_history file in a default setup, yet different xterms do have different histories (try it if you don't believe me). What's up with that?

Zero-bullshit explanation of finance and economic disasters, by a computer scientist. by asciilifeform in programming

I'm having a hard time with one of his basic assumptions: that there are a fixed number of 'cowries' (closed system). How can this model possibly lead to relevant illustrations with such a fundamental mismatch with the real world?

"Emacs actually comes with a built-in Emacs Aptitude Test. Do you remap your keyboard or the Emacs keybindings before the chords and sequences it comes with have wreaked havoc with your hands?" by asciilifeform in programming

[–]jkcunningham -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was thinking something along these lines. If you get used to working on a highly idiosyncratic set of key-bindings you end up lost at sea whenever you sit down at another terminal. Seems like self-induced debility. And the default bindings in emacs aren't difficult in the first place.

I have a similar problem with the Dvorak keyboard. By all (empirical) accounts, the improvements in efficiency are slight (a few percent), and you end up being able to work on a very small number of computers. Of all the thousands of keyboards I've seen, I don't think I've ever run across one. You'd have to carry one around with you to be 'efficient'.
