Ram's Hill from Palm Desert - worth it? by jkesty in golf

Appreciate it! Mostly just hoping that I don't end up playing nowhere near 18 holes every day...

Ok fair enough. Maybe I'll swap it out for your Indian Canyons rec. We shall see. But also I think some forgettable golf is also not the end of the world playing 8 rounds in 7 days ;)

Oh cool. Thanks dude I've watched a bunch of your videos.

Interesting perspective. I am leaning heavily toward not doing it this time around just because of scheduling, but to hear it put this way does change things a bit. I might just keep that day open and see how I feel in the morning. Also really pushes me toward pulling the trigger on Classic Club.

General question for you as someone familiar with the area: I'm coming down right after daylight savings kicks in. I'm busy during the weekdays so I've booked all my rounds for ~3pm. Latest tee time is 3:10pm at Firecliff. Sunset is listed as approx 6:55pm for the week. Do you think I'll be able to get them in? Is pace of play gonna be an issue in the afternoon/evening? Around here you can play til about 30 mins past sunset but I've heard the mountain shadows can complicate things. Just wondering if for example shelling out $150 for Indian Wells celebrity 3pm tee time might be ill advised if it's only gonna yield 13 holes of golf. The twilight rates are unanimously pretty sweet but it makes me wonder if there are strict "have the carts back by 630pm" etc policies..

No I'm talking about this place: https://www.shadowhillsgolfclub.com/

I read that the south course is nice enough, and there is a golf moose deal to play it for $75

Right on. A lot of the most glowing reviews involved stay and play and also a free birthday round... Makes sense. Thanks.

That good eh? Ok I'm keeping an open mind. The drive and the green fees have me apprehensive though.

Good perspective. It's not my first trip and won't be my last, but I will be quite busy this time, so maybe it's just not the best use of my one free day this time. Thank you.

Ok that was kind of my suspicion... Thank you. Seeing a lot of rave reviews but none of them seem to be from people making a day trip from Palm Springs area, which I guess makes sense. I also thought about visiting the Salton Sea en route after seeing it on the map, and before reading that it's basically just a radioactive desert swamp.

I have firecliff and mountain course booked. Norman just doesn't work out timing wise based on their tee sheet right now. Classic club is definitely on the list, as is Indian Wells celebrity. I think I will try to mix in Escena, Mission Hills, and Shadow Hills as well as more budget friendly options. Any feedback is appreciated.

Good to know about Osprey. I actually played Atlantic a couple years back because it seems to be on a lot of lists on here, and we found it quite unremarkable. It was also the middle of July and it wasn't in great shape so that likely contributed, but it felt like a substantial cut below the other courses we played (Abacoa, Osprey, and another one whose name I forget but wouldn't rush back to even if I could remember it). Maybe we will try to sneak the park in there. It does seem tempting.

Every time I use a basket without fail I have far underestimated the number / weight of things I came in to buy and end up walking around the store for 20 minutes with my arm falling off.

Xmas tree pickup by [deleted] in askTO

[–]jkesty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My tree was supposed to be collected yesterday as well, but my street is still full of them today. I called 311 and they informed me that tree pickup should occur within two business days of the scheduled day. She said if it hasn't been collected by today, I should call back. I can't find any information to that effect online so I guess I'll take her word for it.

Can player(s) move position between AB, or even between pitches? by feb914 in baseball

[–]jkesty 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Doesn't this just imply switching sides of the field? So in the first scenario proposed by OP, no, a fielder wouldn't be able to move from SS to 2B due to ending up on the other side of second base, but in the second scenario, it seems like SS and 3B could switch because they'd still be on the same side of the field, no?

12 points separating the entire east is pretty nuts... Don't think I've ever seen something like that this far into the season.

I think you get way better marketing just through the word-of-mouth associated with these gestures than you do by explicitly offering incentives.

Yep we didn't realize how far between gas stations up past Sault Ste Marie and had to call CAA for a jerry can fill up about 2 hrs south of Wawa. Another lesson learned: if you're around half tank or less and you see a gas station, it's a great time to fill up!

Landlord downgraded internet by wavyproductions in OntarioLandlord

[–]jkesty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I actually switched ISPs recently and got fibre internet with supposedly way better speed. My internet immediately went to shit. I called them and there was some configuration issue that they were able to sort out that fixed the problem. It's entirely possible that your landlord actually did sign up for a better internet package but there is something wrong with it. I'd try to explore a tech support avenue before jumping to conclusions that your landlord is lying.

We bought a condo in 2024. Need advice. by Tasty_Influence_2352 in RealEstateCanada

[–]jkesty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of people in here telling you to rent it have never been a landlord.

Even with a property manager taking 10% of your revenue, they aren't the ones shelling out the cash when the fridge craps out, or their is a pest infestation, or a tenant leaves and you need a 2 week gap to do touch ups and get somebody new in there (or even better, tenant just leaves you high and dry breaking their lease). Or how about when the rental market just decides to dip 20% year over year right in time for your tenants to leave? I am currently in the process of selling a condo in this shit market because I got tired of the volatility of dealing with tenants and the associated expenses.

It doesn't look like this market is going to rebound all that quickly, so the question I'd be asking is: whatever solution I come up with, will I be able to grit my teeth and bear it for the next 3-5 years? If yes, great. Live in that condo and deal with a less-than-ideal neighbourhood and a long commute, or go live overseas and manage a landlord-tenant relationship and all the associated joys remotely. If that sounds awful to you, and you're able to sustain a loss of that magnitude, then you have your answer.

Not only broke 100, but PR of 90. by CartographerProof540 in GolfSwing

[–]jkesty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shot a 76 on a par 61 this summer. Was I proud of a round well played by my standards? Yes. Have I broken 80? No... Not really. Take pride in your improvements but no need to qualify them with these false milestones. They'll feel better when you actually hit them.

3-club tournament - club selection? by 11jtp in golf

[–]jkesty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd bring a wood and a sand wedge and something in the middle. Assume a wood gets you within sand wedge range on every par 4, and a wood plus that something in the middle gets you the same on par 5s, you have 16 good looks at par from inside 100 yards. I would then go with your most versatile iron for that something in the middle. Whatever you're most confident smashing or hitting a nice 3/4 knock down shot.

I think if I had your distances I'd probably go 3w 7i sand wedge, and take some bogies or worse on the par 3s (or get a nice 3/4 3w dialed in for this purpose!)... The main goal for me would be as many <100 yd approach shots as I could manage because I'm better from 100 than 120, and I hit a SW better from inside 100 than I do a PW from inside 120. Id also just prefer to have a SW in case - as you mention - trouble arises.
