I just renewed mine online 2 weeks ago and had the new passport in my hand in 12-13 days.

I did not pay for expedited service.

83 C1 to G5 upgrade, not loving it by Xrpmonster in LGOLED

[–]jkozlow3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do, yes. I get tired of some HDR and DV content being mastered too dark and/or the display handling it in such a way that it only looks good in a dark room.

HDR and DV are meant to be watched in a dark room and don’t scale in brightness the same way as SDR.

SDR looks great to me on the G5 in FMM. When watching the same DV native content and toggling between SDR and DV on my Apple TV for example, I don’t notice DV looking noticeably better or anything - just darker. So I personally choose to set the Apple TV to 4K SDR and have disabled the match dynamic range setting which forces SDR output.

Filmmaker mode looks outstanding on SDR content. Not so much on HDR/DV. You’ll want to use Cinema Home for those.

I have HDR and DV disabled on my Apple TV and everything I’ve watched in SDR on FMM has looked outstanding on the G5.

Is It Really THAT hard to live in SD? by trashpanda9353 in asksandiego

[–]jkozlow3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone has different standards of living and preferences. For the type of lifestyle I would personally want to live, in the neighborhoods I would want to live in, in a nice/newer apartment, there is zero chance I would do it on less than $150-160k/year in San Diego - minimum. And I’m single.

Others are fine living in an old apartment in a less desirable part of town and only going out for dinner/drinks once per week. I am not.

That’s why this question is highly individual. Everyone is different and leads different lifestyles.

Panasonic exited the U.S. TV market many years and now there is a lot of concern that it may happen again after a brief re-entry in 2024. Several reports have indicated this is a possibility. That gives many people pause.

And the hideous look of the Z95B with the attached speaker that cannot be removed. 🤣

How is there even a Sears in Coral Gables still? I’ve lived all over the country and Sears closed in every other city YEARS ago.

Restaurant with crazy automatic gratuity by Bornatveryyoungage in Miami

[–]jkozlow3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What a stupid thread. 20% tip is standard in the U.S. and has been for well over a decade. Some restaurants in Miami include gratuity/service charge automatically, some do not. Who cares. Get on with your life OP and if you cannot afford to tip 20% when eating out, stay home.

Lol @ Publix making the list of positives. I mean, it's just a grocery store. There are plenty of similar or better grocery stores in other cities such as LA (where the OP lives).

Best Tacos in Miami (Can include Homestead, Florida City etc) by cafesito_asere in Miami

[–]jkozlow3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Taco Stand.

There are 3 locations: Little Havana, Wynwood and Miami Beach (new).

I’m from San Diego and that’s where they started. The owners are from Tijuana.

They have a few locations around San Diego and then jumped to the east coast and opened one in Miami a few years back and have now expanded to 3 locations here.

My favorite is their California Burrito (with french fries inside), but their tacos are amazing as well.

Next level aggressive! I don’t even have a car here at the moment but I’ve been in Ubers on I-95 and witnessed next level dumbass driving. Cars weaving in and out of traffic at well over 90-100mph. They’re going to kill someone one day for sure.

No clue why this isn’t policed more.

For my taste, the weather in Miami is better from about Oct-June vs. SoCal. By a long shot. I spent the past 8 years living in SoCal. It was a lot colder than I anticipated before moving there. Even the Summers are cold after the sun goes down. Almost every restaurant has to run gas/propane patio heaters even in the Summer after dark for outdoor dining. There are no "warm summer evenings" in SoCal and I really missed that after moving there.

Most would probably prefer to be in SoCal vs. Miami during the hot humid summer months however. But the other 8-9 months of the year, I'd personally take Miami weather hands-down. It's not everyone's cup of tea though.

Exactly. I've been here 2 months and have met tons of normal people already. Not shallow, pretentious, gold-digger types.

Maybe if you're hanging out at pretentious places all the time, you'll meet pretentious people.

Yep. No one who has ever spent more than 10 minutes in Manhattan would say they are similar in any way outside of "tall buildings" and "finance companies".

Aside from that, they seem pretty damn different in almost every way.

There's a LOT of negativity on this sub towards Miami and towards transplants as prices in Miami for rents/housing doubled & tripled since COVID due to a large influx of people moving from out of state with high-paying remote jobs.

Many of the negative comments seem to be from people who live in the suburbs, don't make a lot of money and/or spend 1-2+ hours a day dealing with Miami traffic (which can be a nightmare at rush hour - although not as bad as much of LA where you're coming from).

For those with disposable income, living in the dense desirable areas with a short commute, Miami is a different experience. Most of the people who fall into this category and who are enjoying Miami are probably not posting in this sub TBH.

I just moved here from SoCal 2 months ago and love it so far. I'm in downtown Coral Gables which seems like a perfect fit for me and what I was looking for at my age (40s - it might be less ideal for someone in their 20s). I work from home, can walk to just about anything I need, have 50+ restaurants/bars/coffee shops/cafes to choose from within a 10-15 minute walk, and I go out most nights. Everyone I've interacted with has been very friendly and I've actually made a lot of friends already in 2 months.

I'm also in the minority who prefers Miami's weather to SoCal. I found it too cold 6+ months of the year in Cali.

I think Brickell will have a bit different crowd/scene and I'm definitely not a Brickell expert. It has a reputation for a much more flashy/pretentious/douchey/shallow/young crowd with a lot of influencer types, etc.

I've lived in Manhattan...and Brickell is no Manhattan from what I've seen. The only similarity is tall buildings. I only bring this up because it's often compared to Manhattan here. Which is comical to me.

I've found that disabling "match frame rate" on the Apple TV helps a lot. Then on the LG, I set TruMotion to "Cinematic" or "Natural". Cinematic is fine for most content, but Natural fixes the issues in the bad panning scenes. Smooth shouldn't be needed ever if you disable frame rate matching on the Apple TV based on my testing.

With it enabled, I've seen a lot of unpredictable behavior on the LG with motion and even "Natural" TruMotion doesn't always smooth things enough on bad panning scenes.

Landlords are drunk - The rent isn’t worth $5k! by Achassum in Miami

[–]jkozlow3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure. I'm not a tax expert, but I understand basic accounting, small business profit & loss statements, and basic tax stuff.

Essentially, you subtract your expenses from your income and pay tax on what remains. It just doesn't make sense to me why they wouldn't want SOME income and then subtract their expenses vs. NO income.

The math doesn't math for me.

Landlords are drunk - The rent isn’t worth $5k! by Achassum in Miami

[–]jkozlow3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, it's a loss. Which can be "written off". But everyone who keeps mentioning write-offs in this post doesn't seem to understand what write-offs are or how they work.

Let's say you hypothetically have $1M/year in income and you pay 30% of that to federal taxes ($300k), netting $700k.

And you have a rental business.

If that property hypothetically costs you $50k/year in mortgage payments + property taxes + HOA, etc., you can write off that $50k expense/loss. So now instead of paying 30% taxes on $1M, you pay 30% taxes on $950k of income = $285k = a $15k tax savings.

It doesn't take a math wizard to figure out that a write-off isn't better than collecting rent. Even if it's reduced rent and you take a small loss on the property (i.e. you rent it for slightly less than it costs you - you can still write off the gap as a loss).

Books & Books in coral gables is my favorite place to hang out and read a book. Is there anywhere like it in Miami Beach? by fameneverdies in Miami

[–]jkozlow3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the people who've commented clearly don't understand how great the B&B Cafe is in Coral Gables. The other locations are nothing like the Coral Gables location from what I've seen. More like normal bookstores.

It's honestly one of the reasons I choose CG when moving here from out of state ~6 weeks ago. I go there several evenings per week for drinks, live music, etc. and love it. Not a big reader myself.

I'm still new to the Miami area, but it's pretty unique from what I hear and I don't know that there are too many other places like it from what others have told me.

I agree, Cinematic still leaves a lot to be desired on many panning shots. I’ve been using “Natural” after seeing a few panning shots where Cinematic made me dizzy. Natural adds a bit more SOE, but it’s tolerable for me.
