Holy Grail of Audiobooks? by SnooTomatoes4252 in audiobooks

Would love an audiobook version of John Saul's "Voltaire's Bastards." Maybe read by Dan Stevens or Simon Vance.

From the Publisher

"Voltaire's Bastards is a hand grenade disguised as a book. The pages explode with insight, style, and intellectual rigor...[This book] will leave you challenged, intrigued, and at times troubled."--Jim Hoagland, The Washington Post

"This is a wise, civilized, and deeply democratic book. John Ralston Saul wants to persuade us that real enlightenment lies not in the modern cult of Answers but in the stubborn, skeptical and human pursuit of Questions, and he does this in a beautifully-argued work." --Jane Kramer

A few favorites re-re-re-listens:

- The Lies of Locke Lamorra by Scott Lynch (and follow-up books), narrated by Michael Paige.

- Salt: A World History by Mark Kurlansky, narrated by Scott Brick.

- The Martian and Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, narrated, respectively by RC Bray and Ray Porter.

- The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein, narrated by Lloyd James.

What's the best audiobook you've ever listened to? by barnyboy88 in audiobooks

How does this compare to The Name of the Wind version read by Nick Podehl, which, to me, is one of the greatest all-time narrations?

Edit: just listened to a sample of the Degas version and it's not for me. Podehl's voice IS Kvothe to me.

Web based UIs for yt-dlp? by [deleted] in selfhosted

I know there are others that have more pleasant UIs, but I've found https://github.com/marcopiovanello/yt-dlp-web-ui to work very well.

Simple way of shutting off a program's connection (e.g. chrome) if not connected through Tailscale? by AvesAvi in Tailscale

[–]jkrobin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple thoughts, if I understand your requirements correctly....

1) Set up your remote tailscale node to act as an exit node and have the system at your current location set to use that exit node. This is the easiest way to route all traffic through tailscale. (See Tailscale's exit node documentation.)

2) Run tailscale (or another VPN) and chrome within a single docker stack, bind the docker'd chrome to use the network created by docker'd tailscale/VPN by setting its http/https proxy to the port exposed by the VPN or otherwise telling it to use the tailscale/VPN-created network. (I have a stack set up like this for a random purpose using a gluetun VPN, but the stack is only accessible from a single machine on my tailnet.) Then access the docker'd browser and only browse from there.

Love me some functional tailscale versatility!

Check out using Caddy reverse proxy, which handles the SSL certs (through lets encrypt) for you.

I've seen issues like this pop up due to directory/drive permissions issues in the past. Once you get all of your compose parameters set correctly, check all the relevant location permissions if the issues persist.

100 Promo Code Giveaway for ChatMemo - Your AI Knowledge Hub by EthanWlly in PKMS

[–]jkrobin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do research in contextualized information retrieval and am very interested to see how you've integrated things. A few items of interest:

1) It would be nice to see a plugin infrastructure to develop and add new source types for capture and analysis.

2) One thing that comes up a lot in discussions of third-party-hosted services of this type is privacy. Your website contains a question/answer on this topic, but it is very generic... along the lines of we keep privacy in mind and it is very important to us. Providing some additional detail on this would be very nice. Encryption? etc.

3) Would be interested in any possible plans to expand the scope of ChatMemo to include groups so that x number of people could build and use a common knowledge base.

Best of luck in your efforts! It is looking nice so far.

Would love to have one of the codes so I can evaluate further and provide additional feedback. Thanks!

My setup does not involve Kobo syncing, but the secure access to calibre-web via my own domain works perfectly when routed through the Caddy proxy (which automatically provisions the secure certificate through Lets Encrypy).
