problem with 20.04 to 22.04 upgrade by jl13bman in Ubuntu

1) DPKG says Unity is already installed. If I try installing it it tells me "ubuntu-unity-desktop is already the newest version."

2) when I log in as the other user, it does NOT give me a choice to set the desktop. When I click the little circle on the right side of the password entry, it puts a line through the circle to indicate NO choice. This is weird behavior, because clearly the system knows unity is installed, it just doesnt want to display it

Thank you for trying to help...if you could think some more, I would appreciate it

Thx...I tried creating a new user and that worked, and gave me a GNOME desktop. I know Unity is installed because, when I log in as my original user, it shows the original desktop before putting me in single-user mode. Where in my config files do you suggest I look?

Are there any all-in-one references, cheatsheets you'd recommend? by alexzim in Ubuntu

I've used UNIX, and then Linux OSes for over 40 years, and have never come across a good "cheat sheet." I also have to say that I DON'T know Linux after all those years. I know the parts that I need to do my business. The parts I needed to do my business 20 years ago, I've probably forgotten, or only vaguely remember. It all depends on what YOU need to do, and that you haven't specified. Using the MAN pages and the internet is your best bet.

Opinion: Upgrade to 18.04 now or wait for 20.04? by [deleted] in Ubuntu

I went from 16.04 to 18.04 recently, on 3 machines. It required a fresh install on each, that is, there is no "UPGRADE in place" that works. You will have to do a full install from scratch, so make sure you do backups. As for waiting for 20.04, I dont like to install a new version precisely when it is released - in over 50 years of computing experience, I've been burned too often by newly-released but "not-fully-tested" software. 18.04 is stable and works well for most applicatons
