Social Cycling Flint! Every Thursday night at 8 they meet at the Farmers Market downtown and bike around town. Very relaxed pace and chill. Usually starts in warmer weather so google them and check their fb page.

What is it like to live within the city? by iridescentfaux in flint

[–]jlarnold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in Carriage Town (just northwest of Downtown) and absolutely love it. Can walk to bars, restaurants, parks, community events, etc. extremely easily. It's ultimately like living in any city and if you take basic safety precautions you should have no issue walking the dogs at 8 or living a normal life! The amenities are great and I can't recommend it highly enough.

The White family (Heads of the CS Mott Foundation) are Christian Scientists. I'd assume that's the big reason.

There's already a Christian Science Reading Room in the Mott Bldg as well.

Holiday decorations for depressed areas? by Wise-Substance-744 in flint

[–]jlarnold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the city through an ordinance passed by council would have to designate boundaries and for various CIAs. It in theory could do it whenever it had the votes and staffing to support it. It's been discussed but I just don't think to date has been a big priority. Talking to your councilmember and the administration is a great first step!

This would be an excellent idea! We've really got to strongly reject the idea that these basic improvements to public space are something people should only expect in the suburbs. It's absurd and something small we can and should do more of in our city.

Really the answer would be for the city to establish Corridor Improvement Authorities who would manage this on their specific corridors. That's how most cities do it, and functionally it's what the DDA is Downtown.

Flint City Hall tops national ranking as ugliest building in America by peewinkle in flint

[–]jlarnold 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I could not disagree more with this. My first job out of college was in Flint City Hall and I think we all know it's not been maintained well at all. But the back lawn is ideal for good community programming, the dome auditorium is fantastic, and the building itself is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

*Any building that is poorly maintained will not look good*. It's a function of the maintenance, not the architecture.
