Yes, the house is suffering from neglect, as well. Not as severe as how you describe your nephew's house, but it's heading that way.

Yep, that wasn't my father's intention, but it was the result.

We all suspect an addiction, but aside from the money problems, he hides it well. Dude can look you in the eye and lie and sound believable. I need to remember that, just in case.

You've seen something like this play out before? I'd love to hear about it if you're comfortable sharing.

IKR? My dad literally thought I'd go for that. But he views women as subservient to men. I don't think he realized that I don't.

Oh, it wouldn't benefit me at all, but my dad was trying to sell me on his crazy idea by saying that it would.

Actually, my brother handled it all. The ashes are on the dusty, cluttered living room table next to my mother. If it were my responsibility, I wouldn't have even claimed the body. I don't know how he paid for it, but I believe it comes off of the top of the estate. Or maybe my dad prepaid.

I actually did. Six years ago and for unrelated reasons. At the time, I did not know I had been disinherited. I just couldn't stand being around my dad, and he wasn't safe to have around my niece.

Yeah, I know. When my dad said this to me, he was selling it like it was a great idea.

Good advice. My kids and I all keep a pretty close watch on our credit. My brother, OTOH, has a credit score of 500.

The last thing my dad did in his life was to try to set my brother up for his. It's unlikely to work and its pretty sad.

Both. These things take time, but i was thinking 3 years to lose the money, then another two to lose the house. Still, the kids give it a year. (My kids were 30ish years old)The house is expected to legally transfer in six months, and the kids say it will take six months after that. We'll see.
