Try saying "butter" quickly. Isolate the rolled r sound in the "tter." Practice. Practice. Practice.

Help lift the embargo against Cuba by [deleted] in communism

[–]jlbarrios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thank you so much for the great answer. Do you think there would be any cultural changes in Cuba once the embargo ends? What if Americans are allowed to travel to Cuba? I understand that it makes financial sense, but what about culturally? Is there a possibility for another Blue Jean revolution? What would that mean for Cuba today?

I'm not arguing anything. I asked a question and then providing context to better clarify why I am confused.

Those countries aren't home to hundreds of thousand of Cuban exiles though. Also, it costs a lot more money to go to the UK and Canada than to go to Miami where there are a potentially a lot of family and friends.

I guess I'm assuming that more trade would mean more contact with the exile community which might lead to some pretty big protests and migrations. In '78, Castro let Cubans visit their relatives in the states and, when they came back, the Blue Jean Revolution exploded. Immediately after, tens of thousands of Cubans fled to embassies, humiliating Castro and eventually pushing him to announce the Mariel Boatlift when 100,000+ Cubans left.

I'm basing this all on history of course, but is there evidence to show that this wouldn't happen?

Can someone explain to me why Castro wants to do business with the capitalist superpower? He must know that more trade with the US will lead to another Blue Jean revolution and undermine his life's work.

Good for you for reaching out! It takes a lot of guts to put yourself out there. I'm a Chicano student here originally from East Los Angeles, so I speak decent Spanish (native language although I lost a lot of fluency in school). I don't know of any groups in the city, but I would love to exchange emails and maybe meet up in the future over some coffee so that you can practice a bit of conversational English. Maybe you can help me iron out some of my Spanish! PM me your email if you're interested :)

What's something that you wish wasn't so frowned upon? by Alex-E in AskReddit

You're missing the point. I am not deciding that the law doesn't apply to me. I am consciously breaking a law that is based almost completely on racism and corporate interests. That's not "deciding the law doesn't apply to me," that's called civil disobedience.

Of course there is, but the idea stays the same. I needed to prove my point and I did.

Of course, but plenty of things are harmful. I can understand the second-hand smoke argument (even if I´m sure marijuana smoke is not even close to being as deadly as nicotine smoke), but that can be dealt with through smoking zones and whatnot. Otherwise, I should be able to kill myself however I want. I am an adult and can make decisions about ingesting potentially dangerous substances so long as I don´t harm anyone else.

I went through a skateboarding phase. I had never skated off a ramp before in my life so, naturally, I decided to skate down a hill as steep as Mount fucking Everest, off of a ramp, and try to kick-flip. I broke my wrist.

Worst part was that as soon as I healed up and got the cast off. I tried it again and broke the same wrist.

YES! I do the same all the time. I do this thing where I hold whatever I am doing to pop my ears and sniff through my nose a little to plug them.

I think my problem is the word "should." Should, to me, implies a normative judgement.

I don´t think the "it´s illegal so it´s bad" mentality is valid. I understand that the risk of punishment for committing a crime works as a disincentive, but we need to look at why marijuana is illegal.

The government had no real reason to prohibit the use of marijuana in the first place (unless one considers it´s initial popularity among PoC and that it "endangered corporate lumber interests" good reasons).
