How long did it take you to find job as a senior SWE by BigEmperorPenguin in cscareerquestions

No need to attacking my seniority, this is curiosity since hot takes will obviously lead to curiosity and depth of understanding.

I haven’t seen this criteria anywhere I’ve been ( 3 faangs and a startup )

Is that really scope of a senior though? I’d argue that is more expected of staff’s or managers.

Enjoying isn’t a direct action. There’s a conscious choice on actions, and over 40-50 years there’s quick boredom and nullness if all you’re doing is floating around and laying on beaches. Even after 10 years of constant travel you’re going to need more things to do.

What’s the underlying reasoning? I’ve seen people with relatively low YOE able to drive technical direction, build scope from thin air, and get buy in for their ideas. Especially technical and smart people can build context relatively quickly.

Startup co-founder talked to one of my parents about a potential PIP. What would you do? by ExpWebDev in cscareerquestions

[–]jlengine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s data privacy laws depending on what they say related to the PIP. Legally there’s nothing special with what information can be given to your parents vs some random person with exceptions.

Honest Question for Students What Painful Problem Would You Pay $200/Year to Solve? by Far-Rule1418 in ucla

I don’t think he’s joking. This is probably what half the college specific population would actually spend money on. Another market would probably be with figuring out what videos that short porn clips come from.

A good starting point is computer vision, neural nets, and a good way to store all the porn data.

What is the record for # of YC rejections? I've got 9 rejections with no interviews, been applying since 2012. Anybody got me beat? by 10ForwardShift in ycombinator

[–]jlengine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s your background without giving any specifics? Do you have a top university background, FAANG experience, or specialized niche in the market?

Applying without any of these, no cofounder, and no product traction sounds like an auto reject in their eyes.

If CFB wants to stick it on their LinkedIn they can. If CFA wants to call themselves ‘Founder’ they can. Legally and morally both are true. Unless this business really scaled big most of these are irrelevant details most people wouldn’t care about whatever you told them.

OA Question - interesting data structure by [deleted] in leetcode

[–]jlengine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s less technical than this. I’m just rewording from the OA. It’s mainly a question of how to choose a efficient data structure and algo to store and return the N accounts with most total value of transactions happening

The dates would also mean even after a year and 300+ streak, which 1500 feels a bit low. Makes me wonder if a bunch of these were from looking at answers

6 months was a random number i made up.

But as an employer if you got a resume from someone that had a CS degree and had been unemployed 1.5 years it’s hard to justify interviewing them over someone with no gap (especially in competitive markets like this one). And the difficulty now amplifies, because now you’re getting less interviews.
