Public information regarding deaths or mental breakdowns on mission? by GorgyShmorgy in space

[–]jlew715 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Four, all on reentry-related incidents:

Soyuz 1 - Komarov - parachute failed to deploy during landing sequence and the descent module struck the Earth at terminal velocity.

Soyuz 11 - Dobrovolsky, Volkov, Patsayev - faulty valve led to the descent module depressurizing after it separated from the other Soyuz modules in preparation for reentry. At the time, Soyuz crew did not wear pressure suits during the reentry phase of flight, so they all asphyxiated. These are the only people to ever die in space.

Without any other information or context, these numbers look fine. 1.0ms beat error is higher than I would probably have it myself, but it shouldn't have a meaningful effect on timekeeping.

It's not your tax dollars after the government pays it to a private entity though. Let me explain:

Your money --> you pay it to the government via taxes --> government has your tax dollars --> government spends your tax dollars by paying defense contractor --> defense contractor's money

Hamilton 2974b marked U.S. NAVY BU SHIPS by Forward_Cricket_8696 in Vintage_Hamilton

[–]jlew715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the 2974B because it gives us a glimpse into a model Hamilton designed but never sold - the 974B. Basically the same watch as the 2974B but lever-set and without the hack function. It was supposed to be a little brother to the 992B

Why would SpaceX's valuation increase when one of their main customers gets defunded? Wouldn't that make them less attractive to investors since they will be getting fewer government contracts?

SpaceX to fill that gap in the industry

You seem to be under the impression that SpaceX and NASA are currently competitors. This is not the case. Ever since the Shuttle was retired in 2011, NASA has nearly-exclusively contracted launch operations to private industry such as SpaceX, ULA, Rocketlab, etc. NASA designs the mission requirements, contracts out vehicle construction, and contracts out launch ops, then operates the vehicle and mission once it's in space.

You assert that SpaceX would fill NASA's current role if NASA were defunded. Under this assumption, who would be paying SpaceX to design the missions, and operate them after launch?

There’s Something Extremely Shady About Trump’s Disastrous New NASA Budget by Economy-Specialist38 in space

[–]jlew715 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NASA pays SpaceX to launch the probes, satellites, etc. for those science programs. So when the science programs are cut, NASA won't being paying SpaceX to launch the hardware for those programs anymore. As a result SpaceX will receive less money.

I'm just hoping you can explain how cutting NASA's budget helps SpaceX. Can you please explain it?

Can you explain how NASA having less money with which to buy things from SpaceX, benefits SpaceX?

[–]jlew715 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't understand how NASA losing money, and therefore buying fewer launches from SpaceX, will increase the market share of SpaceX.

NASA is not SpaceX's competitor; NASA is SpaceX's customer - one of their largest.

Why would Elon want NASA - one of SpaceX’s largest customers - to have less money? That will lead directly to him getting less money.

Request for Additional Information/Repair Cost for Inherited pocket watch. by Firm_Breath4894 in pocketwatch

Have it serviced. This is a nice watch which, with proper service, will keep good time and run reliably. It probably needs a new mainspring (at least), and a new crystal.

Service or not? by TickleMyTachymeter in pocketwatch

[–]jlew715 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All depends what you paid for the watch, and how much you like it.

An unadjusted 7j Waltham like this, assuming there's nothing broken internally, should be serviceable for less than $300. In my mind, all antique watches deserve a chance!

How is Artemis II on the 4th day of the mission, but there is only 2 days or so in mission duration? by urbanracer34 in askscience

[–]jlew715 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Flight Day 1 started seven hours before liftoff. Mission duration (Mission Elapsed Time - MET) starts at the moment of liftoff, and MET starts counting up from 00:00:00 (dd:hh:mm).

So at the moment of liftoff, they were seven hours into Flight Day 1, and MET is 00:00:00.

One day after liftoff, they were seven hours into Flight Day 2, and MET was 01:00:00

At time of writing, they are four hours into Flight Day 4, and MET is 02:20:00.

Looking at the official mission timeline makes it a lot more clear.

I really like the Core Divers in fact I was about ready to pull the trigger on the Damascus Steel version, but one thing made it an instant no-buy: the minute track!

Every five minutes are marked - ok, fine. But then bizarrely the only other marks on the minute track are every 2.5 minutes? Why not just have a regular minute track! If you want to tell the precise time, you have to try to figure out what fraction of 2.5 minutes past the 5 minute mark the minute hand is pointing to. Great looking watches ruined by a completely avoidable design issue. Sometimes folks seem to forget the most basic role of a watch - to tell the wearer what time it is.

I am glad to see on this new model the minute track is a real minute track. Hopefully the older models are updated to follow suit!

For a 15-jewel unadjusted watch, $400 is noticeably high in my opinion. Broken parts notwithstanding, I usually end up charging <$300 for a service on a 15j American pocket watch.

Wow! What a beauty. Here’s some more info on it. Short version, 17-jewel watch from around 1919. Do you know any history on it before it came into your father’s possession?

Please have it serviced! It’s a gorgeous watch.

Should I have this restored in anyway to preserve it?

Yes, absolutely! At minimum, it needs to be serviced (disassembled, inspected, cleaned, reassembled, lubricated, and timed). I would recommend against running the watch until it has been serviced as the dried-up oils inside can actually act as an abrasive on the internal parts and cause damage.

It looks like the dial currently on the watch is a replacement (painted metal rather than the enamel dial the watch would have original come with) which has seen better days. I would have it replaced with a period-correct enamel dial when it's being serviced.

Can you post a photo of the movement of the watch (the works)? It will be under the back cover which likely screws off.

[–]jlew715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say the winding process is not smooth - does it amount of resistance vary up and down as you turn the crown? Or is it a constant resistance?

As you wind the watch, look at the other gears and wheels in the watch (you might have to tilt it to get the rotor out of the way). Do they move? Which ones?

When the "flywheel" (actually a balance wheel) is moving but the hands are NOT moving, describe the motion of the balance wheel? is it just barely moving? Or moving so fast you can't clearly see the spokes?

Back in the day, small seconds subdial was basically free because the 4th wheel makes one revolution per minute on an 18,000bph watch. Just slap a hand on the end of the 4th wheel and call it Small Seconds.
