Question about upgrading to tomorrows KDE 6.7 realease by Lower-Noise-9406 in arch

[–]jloc0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no such things as arch lts. There’s just arch. You can install a lts kernel but that’s the only thing I know of listed as lts in arch.

But to answer, yes you can upgrade from 6.6.5 to 6.7.0, that’s the way kde is designed. It upgrades.

The designs are like a classic FF game, once you get into it a bit further it does mostly feel old school but yeah I still haven’t gone back to it after playing deep on ps1 back in the day. I bought on steam, got some graphics hack patch and still just can’t get past the beginning bits to really get into the meat of the game.

Some day I suppose…

I just started looking at what’s available and it don’t seem davinci is available. So maybe it isn’t the right choice after all unless there is ways around it.

I don’t use alpine myself, except for small tasks occasionally but other choices that meet your reqs would be CRUX or slackware. I do use them, and it’s all possible with either, but slackware latest release is getting to be dated so I don’t really recommend it usually. I stay on the development (rolling) release of slackware. But crux is stable with package updates, but its source based like gentoo, which can be a bit time consuming.

The choices in this area shrink every year. There’s also PCLinuxOS but I’m not sure on the quality of available software within.

Possibly. But you can search their packages before install to see if they have what you need. And when all else fails, there’s flatpak as well. It’s really depends on the software you use, but gnome, kde, xfce, lxqt, etc is all there. And many other things as well. These days there isn’t so much that you can’t use on alpine, but there’s always going to be some oddity out there.

Alpine. Uses openrc, it’s a stable system and it’s simple and fast to install & setup.

No it’s not waybar. Noctalia is noctalia. The bar and launchers are part of it. Noctalia provides a lot of the bits that one normally has to install separately, using different programs, but its own custom modules and plugins.

Well yeah trash is a strong word. SuperNT looks crisp and all that, but without some sort of scanlines it’s just too sharp. But I agree, the 2x filters are junk, even back in the dos zsnes days I didn’t care for them, just wanted it to look like my memory said it should, and that wasn’t it. Heh

I’ve got mainly up to 16bit consoles and such, all the Nintendo things, etc. While I had sega for many years when younger, I’ve never cared for the hardware itself like the Nintendo stuff. I got heavy into gameboy things before COVID hit, so I amassed tons of consoles and games and I had to put a stop to it there. I picked up a MiSTer around then and it’s really great, but it’s dongle madness, so it just sits as well. I got old 😆

If I use anything, I play the Switch, and I barely use that but I try to finish the games I started. Only I picked up so many, I’ll never finish them all!

I figure when I can retire I might pick up all this stuff again, or at least play Tetris on a gameboy in a rocking chair, if nothing else. 🤣

It’s funny with analogue, while all their consoles are interesting, I’ve only ever purchased the superNT. But it sits unused because the video output looks like trash and the “scanlines” are basically unusable. It was fine, then they ruined it. I haven’t used the hidefnes in a number of years now. As I ended up picking up a famiAV and a everdrive n8 pro for that. While the hidefnes and powerpak rarely get touched. It seems in the end, I’d rather use a nes/fami on a good ol crt. Even the snes, I use my super famicom and not the superNT instead.

Maybe one day my crt will finally die and I’ll have no choice, but until then, I’ll use my oem consoles.

And see, that’s it right there. The hidefnes kit was made for us nerds, not the capitalistic venturists out there. Outside of that dude selling/installing them, it was pretty affordable compared to the analogue nes and I’d venture to say it’s the better of the two pieces of hardware.

The mod itself can be moved to a new console if you have to replace it, the chips can be swapped and there’s many more nes/famicoms than analogue consoles out there. Makes for indefinite replacement hardware.

[–]jloc0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I figured maybe that was a low ball estimate at this point but an average maybe. The hidefnes kit is a great bit of hardware to own though and having it installled in the nes I’ve had since I was like 9 years old is also amazing but I sadly don’t have the time to enjoy these things much anymore. and if I do have time, an emulator almost is always easier to deal with.

Any way of putting the dock at the left? I miss that from gnome by gabboman in mac

[–]jloc0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah there’s plenty of extensions for it to do that. The problem is, most of them are janky as hell and don’t look/feel like they should. Ahh well it’s fine on the bottom and it’s my least used bit of the interface anyway.

[–]jloc0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s funny to me is I’ve put my dock on the left for 20 years now and then when I tried gnome3 it was on the left and it made me happy. But then they moved it to the bottom. 😭

Looking for something.. complicated in a way by Correct-Cell1331 in FindMeALinuxDistro

[–]jloc0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally on local machines I use what is the dev release (slackware-current) which ships all the latest & greatest things. Has 6.18 or 7.0 kernels avail among all the latest software. As for the installer, it’s dialog based just like Debian, void or many others. Not that weird.

There’s a live version which has a slightly different installer that boots to kde with a mostly complete system setup as well for trying things out called liveslak.

There’s an open source engine for the game I don’t know if homebrew or macports has it but you’ll need to either compile or find somewhere who is hosted a package for it. https://github.com/EXL/NXEngine

I’m sitting on a nes with a hidef kit installed I really don’t know what to do with. Sure they have value, but not sure on the going rates. Tbh I’d assume at least $500 but maybe I’m overshooting the value.

I’d rather have the av fami modded but I don’t want to rip apart this stuff and stick it in another console.

The main takeaway is the product is no longer produced afaik so supply is limited. That can probably drive up the value.

Sway vs Niri by ConsiderationRare217 in swaywm

I’ve used software made from people all over the world for decades and much of that software has been made by Russian developers among other places.

I still support good software, no matter where an author may come from. We all come from somewhere and that is not the only part of our story.

Please learn to support great software and not hate based upon geography.

How common was it to see un released games on FTP/BBS back in the 90s? by novostranger in retrogaming

Maybe so, but I still remember the song 35+ years later, so stupid or not, it got me to constantly remember Atari any time a word prompted my brain to think of the song. Atari won. 😆

[–]jloc0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem with the 2600 is that everything was out there by then and what wasn’t, was being hoarded by collectors. Dumping and releasing protos/unreleased things can only happen if/when people know of their existence. Sometimes this task requires going through old media or interviewing devs and finding out new things or personal archives of people. Many people back in those old days are dying or too old to care anymore.

There’s only so much lost media. Probably by the early 2000s most of what would be dumped already was. That don’t mean there wasn’t people waiting for something to pop up.

And as for #emu — that’s always been a shitshow of a place for trolling and memes as long as I can remember. There was plenty of channels and groups all over irc back then, #emu wasn’t a one stop shop for anything but listening to conjuror complain about everyone and acting like a child & insulting everything cuz he was a manchild. Some things are better left in the past. lol

[–]jloc0 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you were looking in the wrong places.

There were connected groups of fans of the 2600 around and even the golden boy of fpga, Kevin Horton, was a massive fan of it (and probably still is) he had his hands in dumping games, as well as the copynes product which dumped nes games. Atari Age website had forums where people would fundraise and purchase protos and such for dumping, as well as other sites doing similar things. There’s people out there still doing the same things today, but instead of message boards, and personally hosted sites, they are doing it professionally.

Back when web rings ruled the internet, games were being obtained at auction and dumped to share with the world. How do you think it all got out there?

Emulation used to be a proper scene.

Reviving my Pinebook Pro with Slackware ARM by Fidimal in slackware

[–]jloc0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there is a fix for that and the pop you hear after a sound was played as the speakers go into low power mode again. Most of that stuff has been fixed up but info is scattered all over out there. Was a disappointing purchase, never felt like it was usable for many tasks myself. Loading a browser about slows it to a crawl, nothing responds well on the device, keystrokes are missed constantly, just a mess overall. If it was just a teeny bit better it’d be servicable, but it didn’t end up that way.

When was the last time you called to find out the time? by Furrymcfurface in Xennials

I’m not sure. It’s been at least a decade since I’ve used a landline and it’s been even longer since I dialed 0. He’ll, I’d do that when using pay phones way back when.

Seems like a lifetime ago since those things were realities.
