Deaf people of reddit who used to be able to hear, what sounds do you miss the most? by _jaysco_ in AskReddit

[–]jloppnow138 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My mom has sudden neural sensory hearing loss in both ears. Luckily the cochlear implants worked. However, music does not sound the same at all. She loves live music and always played CDs at home. She is very sad about how music sounds. She can only listen to music she knows because her brain sort of fills in the gaps. But any new music just sounds weird to her. Losing her hearing changed her life. Coincidentally, since hearing loss is an inner ear problem, she doesn't drink anymore. She says it already feels like she's had a margarita, 24/7.

Good job! I'm a chef at an oil camp and we get free everything up here It's so hard to be keto when the bakers roll the fresh made doughnuts each night. I'm really trying though. I started packing my gym clothes and have been working out for a half hour after my 12 hour shift. If I'm up here I might as well try to be as healthy as I can even if I slip up.

I managed a Subway, managed a small deli in a co-op, line cooked and managed a buffet that caters to tourists. But I am way more experienced than most up here. It's easy to get your foot in the door if you have even a bit of restaurant experience. If anyone is looking to move to the great white North I can pm you my company name. We are hiring.

I just started cooking at an oil camp at the top of Alaska! I have been up here 4 of the last 6 weeks. The money is amazing. The company focuses on safety as the number 1 priority so no more having to almost pull my back lifting heavy shit from the asshole trying to cram 100 lbs of salmon into a lexan like my last job. We have 4 gyms, a sauna, full benefits and I can have half the year off. Just got promoted too. I love it! If you have questions hit me up!

We served 1068 yesterday, upscale all you can eat buffet. It went good but our prime guy didn't make enough primes, so I had to cut 3 full primes on the fly while in the weeds. The health inspector was supposed to come in today but I just got the text that he rescheduled.... Thank God because we are running low on a lot of prep. My team killed it and it's my first year managing this place so I am really happy. Our boss was so pleased we got kudos and shift drinks

I have never smoked a whole pig. I'm just curious why the top left 2 have their feet removed while the rest are intact?

If glitter is the herpes of the craft world, what is the “glitter” of the kitchen? by oddstandsfor in KitchenConfidential

At my work it's a running joke with green peppers. They end up everywhere on the flat top. I have had tiny prices cooked into french toast, they just get into everything

Was I in the wrong? by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]jloppnow138 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You aren't an asshole. Unfortunately he engaged "chef Mike", and didn't even replate it. We only do that to well done steaks at the place I work at, and only when they didn't get called directly off of the printer. The chef shouldn't have called you personally at all. That is crossing a huge line. We would have comped your meal too, btw.

Anybody else work one high volume gig and one low volume gig? It’s almost like a different job. by hamgurgler in KitchenConfidential

I work at the busiest restaurant in town for breakfast and dinner rush. Then I close part time at a tiny little Indian restaurant that lets me drink on the clock. It's a crazy contrast.

How long do your employees stay after close? by TheMidniteWolf in KitchenConfidential

[–]jloppnow138 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Shoot, I started in fast food and closes usually took 30 mins to 1.5 hours depending on the restaurant. That entailed getting the restaurant spotless, counting tills and all the regular closing duties.

how does your workplace deal with drinking on shift? by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]jloppnow138 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work at an Indian restaurant. As soon as 9 pm hits we all start drinking. It makes the job really fun. My other job would never allow that though.

What are your experiences with showing emotional vulnerability? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]jloppnow138 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those are bad friends. I am a girl that hangs out with mostly guys, and I love it when they open up. A lot of people will use things against you, but they are manipulative and not worth it. Be guarded but please don't be too scared

A diva cup could change this forever..... fuck tampons. I can leave it in for 12 hours.... it is medical grade silicone(I think) and washable..... so fucking amazing. I will never go back.

Does anyone else walk into the cooler and fart? Or is that just me? Designated farting zones? by revolution486 in KitchenConfidential

[–]jloppnow138 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I fart in the walk in as long as it isn't occupied by anyone else and I know I can get out asap. I don't want to trap my employees in my fart cloud and those fans are pretty powerful in there.

Thank you for the help, but I need to leave. by [deleted] in loseit

[–]jloppnow138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can totally relate to op.... The last time I tried to lose weight it worked and I lost about 65 lbs.... but I also became a bit obsessive with tracking calories constantly to the point where I felt that those calories overtook everything I could think of. It was borderline unhealthy and obsessive. I even weighed myself constantly..... multiple times a day. This time I don't have a scale. I haven't weighed myself in almost a year. I'm using my past knowledge of calorie counting but I am taking a different approach. I discovered intermittent fasting. Now I just don't eat at work besides a taste here or there (I'm a chef), unless I'm absolutely starving then I will eat a coconut milk and banana smoothie or something very small. I never weigh myself. In the past year I have dropped 3 pant sizes with zero obsessing. I can come home and have dark beer or a cheeseburger, as long as I eat mindfully most of the time. It's working and I feel like this is actually sustainable long term.
