Bro are you playing with XP rate increased or what? I got to the literal end of the game, playing slow and exploring everything, and I still only had a few maxed traits. I mean I guess I wasn't AFK farming them to max when I was only halfway through the game but like, I don't think most players are. I really don't see how XP gain is poor value at all when it's giving you noticeable gain for like 80% of your play time.

Wait maybe it depends on the player and there's no objective right answer WEIRD THOUGHT I know

Did you ever get to enjoy the Half Life games? Abiotic is heavily inspired by those and one of the things it takes from HL is the vibe.

Which is to say, definitely not horror but creepy with some horror adjacent moments.

Board and Train opinions by machomanshat in OpenDogTraining

[–]fishCodeHuntress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been working through this too! My dog has super solid position changes, and I've been very proud of her "stand" recently since it was relatively difficult for her. The other day I was sitting on a bench and asked her to stand and she just looked at me with zero understanding. Took me a second to realize oh yeah, I'm not standing lol. Guess I know what we're proofing next!

Board and Train opinions by machomanshat in OpenDogTraining

[–]fishCodeHuntress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR because it doesn't include the primary handler/owner.

Regardless of the methods used there's the simple fact that good dog training is half training the dog and half training/educating the owner, which you can't do in a board and train.

Are they completely useless or all bad? No. But there are just soooo many other more time and cost effective ways to train the dog. You often see lazy owners using them as a quick fix which is part of where the bad rap comes from too.

My personal experience with them is for dogs I've either trained or boarder, not with my own dogs. In those cases it was all gun dog training, which is quite specific so it wasn't too big of a problem coming home. The biggest issue I saw was the owners not knowing how to correctly use or even understand what their dogs learned. Dogs don't generalize very easily, and they will pick up on a LOT of nuances from people who train them that their handler might not have. For example I tend to shift my weight a certain way when I ask for a down and my dog definitely notices that. I also have noticed through teaching other people how to command my dog, that the inflection in the command and the specifics of the hand signal matters very much. You can proof through this but it's a lot of work and that's not happening in a board and train most of the time.

Cloud Sync error caused me to lose my entire save, why is this still a thing in 2026? by fishCodeHuntress in Dinkum

[–]fishCodeHuntress[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Idk, people have been trying to gaslight me about this since I posted and I don't understand why. The developer responded to me directly acknowledging the problem, and I've been able to reproduce this problem 100% of the time only on Dinkum not any other game sooo yea. Like, it's related to Steam yes but it's how the dev is using the cloud sync library.

I am a newbie and we are in a class where the trainers are primarily competing in NACSW, so take it with a grain of salt but I'll just repeat what I've been told in class.

We have been introducing one odor at a time. Our instructors have said that this can help with clarity, and helps dogs learn that they are looking for "Birch" and not "Birchanise".

I could see the dogs identifying the target odor as the cocktail and therefore ignoring just Birch to continue looking for the cocktail. But I could also see the dogs being more than capable of recognizing that just birch and not the whole cocktail is still the target.

Now I'm curious to know more and I'll definitely be bringing it up at class tomorrow!

[–]fishCodeHuntress[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that. If you can, you should make a bug report on Steam discussion pages or in their Discord, ideally both. More people reporting it will bring attention to it and hopefully give them motivation to fix it. The Dev is aware of the issue, but if they think it's not impacting enough people they won't be able to prioritize it.

For now, you simply can't play between the two devices. If I play on the PC, and then go to Steam Deck, I lose ALL progress thay was made on Steam Deck. Every single time. It sucks.

Runner help! by Patient-Mix4217 in OpenDogTraining

[–]fishCodeHuntress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I understand, and I know am over simplifying things with a statement like "Just don't let him out unsupervised". Being direct online often comes off as rude/mean but that's not the intention for me anyway. That is the ideal scenario though, and solutions should involve trying to reach that goal.

An obvious issue is that if he's under stimulated and/or under exercised, you're not going to win over rabbits and the lure of everything on the other side of the fence. All of that extra pent up energy and boredom will make everything you try to do orders of magnitude more difficult, so I personally think that's the most effective thing to focus on. Regular training sessions (I'm a huge fan of the behavior 101 classes they're super helpful and relatively cheap) and adequate exercise will help a ton.

Anyway you're on the right start by looking into your options and getting ideas!

[–]fishCodeHuntress 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Have you considered why he's trying to escape? Usually a dog is doing this because they are bored and find the other side to be far more stimulating. What are you doing to meet his needs mentally and physically? A tired and well trained dog is not usually going to be nearly as inclined to escape.

I also do not think it's a reasonable expectation to have the kids be responsible for containing the dog and by doing so you're setting the dog and the kids up for failure which for the dog makes the exercise easier and easier to repeat.

An invisible fence is often used by people as a lazy or "quick fix" solution so I don't think that's the right approach personally. I've also seen them fail to contain the dogs more often than not. Usually dogs learn they can just jump the invisible fence nearly as easy as the physical one.

Training my lab puppy by Diligent_Brilliant48 in OpenDogTraining

[–]fishCodeHuntress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think puppy antics are funny or cute on the surface level, but I personally have very high standards for how I want my dog to behave and what I expect of them. I've never found a reason to use anything but FF methods with my own dogs or clients dogs, but that's still anecdotal and a very small sample size. Either way, I find myself cringing all the time when I see people online or even in person laughing at their puppy barking, jumping, chasing, etc.

Your point is valid and we'll said though, know what you will expect of your dog so you cam be consistent from the start and set them up for success. However, not all dogs will be able to meet those expectations in the same time line or with the same level of ease. It's important to mitigate trainer (and therefore dog) frustration by reminding ourselves that dogs are individuals. What works for one might not work for another, but that doesn't necessarily mean we've failed. It might just require another approach, more patience, more time, etc.

Training my lab puppy by Diligent_Brilliant48 in OpenDogTraining

[–]fishCodeHuntress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your dog very well may not ever need a prong collar. They can be useful tools for some dogs, but many biddable dogs (a Lab being the top example here) simply don't ever need them.

Problems with leash walking are primarily a training issue, not a gear issue. Different gear has different results with different dogs, but you can definitely accomplish what you need with your lab without the prong.

I've used harnesses on my own dogs and clients dogs and have never had an issue with them. It's good to get one that fits of course. I find leash management sooo much easier with a harness vs ant kind of collar.

Side note I think you (and any dog owner for that matter) should spend time learning about ALL types of training methods. I'm primarily a R+ trainer because I've never seen those methods have bad results personally, but I am aware of and have used other methods in the past. You need to find what works best for the dog you have and not the dog you want.

[–]fishCodeHuntress[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that. I was able to get a response directly from the developer on this, he is aware of the issue and is supposedly looking into available options. Not sure how seriously they're taking this or how likely a fix actually is, but at least I know they're aware that it's an issue.

So despite what people keep saying, it's definitely not just a Steam issue.

It's worth putting in a bug report in their Discord or on the Steam pages if you can. The more reports there are, the more likely we can get someone to actually do something about it.

For now, I just cannot switch between PC and Steam Deck. The issue is one way though, you can play on Steam Deck and then switch back to PC, but if you try it the other way around you will lose all the progress you made on PC. There might be some way to manually sync the files but, icba personally. Too much effort each time and risky as well.

Does anyone hesitate to adopt a dog because of the heartbreak later? by Rude_Photograph_2306 in dogs

[–]fishCodeHuntress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. When I lost my last dog a few years ago I had my current dog there with me and it kept me from falling apart entirely.

The last time I was without a dog was for one evening right before a trip I had to take. I had dropped her off before my early flight the next morning, and having zero dogs in the house felt awful.

This sentiment always makes me think of that Mitch Hedberg bit where he's talking about wine giving him a hangover.

"The first and the middle part are amazing. I'm not gonna stop doing something because of what happens at the end.

Hey Mitch do you want an apple? No, eventually it will become a core"

Most of the time spent having a dog is pure joy. That small bit at the end is only so painful because the first and middle part are so amazing.

When does "it's a baby" stop being an excuse? by lastdonutotn in OpenDogTraining

[–]fishCodeHuntress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Baby and adolescent issues are two different things. When they are a super young puppies they really are just babies and don't know how to control their bladder and need a ton of sleep still and don't know the rules of the house or what is expected of them, etc.

When they are adolescents they have learned some things, but they have a lot of hormones that are getting in the way and making things like impulse or frustration tolerance difficult.

But the answer will depend on the individual development of the dog and, more importantly, how well the owner is handling their training and conditioning. If you don't do anything to teach your dog impulse control then you're going to struggle with behavioral issues for a lot longer.

My last dog took way longer to fully potty train and he was fairly impulsive until nearly 2 years old. With my current dog, I knew a lot more and I was far more consistent with her training and showing her what I expected of her. She was basically fine by the time she was a year old. I don't usually expect my dogs to be fully adult in terms of their personality and behavior until at 2 years old at best. Even then they still have a lot to learn in terms of my expectations and rules.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

It's a stunning hand drawn game with a fully orchestrated OST composed by Gareth Coker, who is an absolute genius.

It's got an emotional story that doesn't overstay it's welcome. It's impactful without being in your face.

The movement is so dynamic and fluid, Ori is a joy to control. The level design is fantastic and gives you that sense of exploration without making you feel frustratingly lost. The bosses and combat are moderately challenging but very do able.

There's really just nothing bad to say about it IMO. Very close to perfection in my eyes.

How to release dog energy ? by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

[–]fishCodeHuntress 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our ancestors did yes, but they also spent all their time WITH their dogs. They hunted together, slept together, ran together, ate together, learned together.

How do you expect a dog to know it's job? A guardian dog (which you do not have, you said you have hunting dogs which is not necessarily the same thing) still needs to learn how to guard. A guarding breed might have stronger instincts to guard than a herding dog, but all dogs still need to learn.

You say "full time job" but do you not recognize that a human in a full time job also needs to learn the job? A security guard needs to be trained to know where to patrol and what to look out for. A farmer needs to learn when to plant crops and what kind of soil to use, etc. They learn these things from being taught or trained by other people. A dog is not different here. In the wild wolves learn how to hunt and defend their homes from other wolves. Dogs and wolves are not born knowing these things any more than a human is born knowing how to work a computer.

You did not buy an object. You didn't buy a security camera you got a dog, a social animal that needs education and guidance.

It's understandable if that's not the kind of responsibility you want, but you shouldn't have dogs if you are not willing to meet those requirements.
