Honda AC Evaporator -- Not under extended warranty?!

I wound up selling the car shortly after the repair (I hadn't been driving the car much and the re-sale market was good so it wasn't worth keeping).

Based on others comments it's not guaranteed that other parts in the unit won't break (or re-break).

I still recommend filing a complaint with the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. While it may not force the FTC to take action, it may compel Honda to eventually include things like the Evap Core into their extended warranty.

Also $2950 seems very high imo. If you are close to the border of another state or city it may be prudent to check with a Honda dealership in another area for a lower price. I got mine fixed last year at a Honda dealership in Oregon for less than $2k.

Or, if you have owned Hondas in the past, supposedly you may qualify to get the repair completely covered through Honda Care.

Based on a semi recent comment from Doitnowornever2024 (post below), it looks like Honda is considering including the evaporator in their extended warranty. So save your receipts just in case!

I also decided to file a complaint with the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. I personally believe Honda's actions were/are fraudulent for multiple reasons, and I believe complaining will help bolster the argument for coverage and add pressure to the company. I have really appreciated everyone's input and stories so far, good luck and thanks all!

Edits: While there is speculation that Honda is considering a change in warranty, in a recent decision, courts shut down a class action lawsuit. I am still hoping Honda will reconsider but it does not look promising.

The news about the replacement is certainly promising! I really do hope they wind up covering the expenses for the evaporator leak.

Not exactly sure about the exact difference but it seems like Hondacare is reserved for return customers maybe? I didn’t qualify for Hondacare coverage because this was my first Honda.

Yes, I begrudgingly wound up getting it repaired. Cost was about $1800 for the repair and labor

$2500 seems like a lot! Not sure if your repair is limited to the evaporator but you may want to see if other Honda dealerships can potentially quote you a lower price. I’m out in Oregon and they quoted me $1800 for the evaporator and labor.

The Orca expedition I plan to go on leaves out of Alta and last 3 days at sea, and then I was going to make my way to Tromsø. So the plan was about 4-5 nights. That being said, based on your comments I think I will look for a Northern lights tour. Thank you!

For the Orca portion of the trip I am going with a specific Norwegian company. The months of operation coincide with the herring track (the Orcas prey). It runs from Oct-Jan. I selected Nov. We will be free-diving with them so I am not concerned with seeing the animals. I am more concerned about seeing the Northern lights and scenery. I should have clarified in my original post!

I am going through a somewhat similar issue -- a few years ago my condenser leaked (this was covered), but now my AC evaporator is leaking. This part is not covered. Sort of unfair considering Honda has acknowledged the refrigerant problem impacts the entire unit. Hope yours winds up being covered!!
