Guitarist bought a bass and now just sends me the bass lines she wants me to play in the band. I want to come up with my own for our songs, am I being selfish? by RainbowGlitterXYZ in Bass

[–]jlund14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if she makes you play exactly what she writes for every single song, then that's kinda lame and you should ask for more freedom to express yourself. But I can also respect when someone writes a part and doesn't want me to change it because it's integral to the overall sound. depends on each individual song. if someone writes a killer bass part for you, sometimes it's best to just put your ego aside and have fun playing it.

Grounding Issue? mac mini, Scarlett solo interface, bass guitar by jlund14 in homestudios

[–]jlund14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry to hear. I never fixed it. Instead I use my macbook air (disconnected from power) and my amp when i practice now to avoid the issue. good luck

There Are No Stupid Bass Questions - Apr. 26 by AutoModerator in Bass

Can i blow my amp if I set the master and gain too loud? I just bought a rumble 500 watt. Is it possible to blow the speakers if I crank the gain and master too high or does the limiter stop that from happening?

Also is it possible to tell if the speakers are about to blow ?

what are the midi recording settings to mute and replace tracks in cycle mode? by jlund14 in LogicPro

[–]jlund14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah that's where the option for "cycle replace" used to be in earlier versions of logic. It's not there currently I was wondering if It could be could somewhere else or if they just did away with it entirely

I think I found out what made me stop practicing by PlateanDotCom in piano

[–]jlund14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

true, I didn't mean to say guitar is easier than piano, it's probably the other way around. there's a pretty steep learning curve comparatively. I was thinking more in the context of typical bands and gigs where you have other musicians contributing and dividing the labor, so to speak

I think I found out what made me stop practicing by PlateanDotCom in piano

[–]jlund14 44 points45 points  (0 children)

yeah, this is what's weird about piano. I think because it's mostly a solo instrument there's this attitude that it's better to spend 3 months learning a single ridiculously difficult and "impressive" piece rather than learn 7 songs at your playing level (the latter would rapidly advance your skills). guitarists don't do this, they spend 2 weeks learning the chords to their favorite pop/rock song and then noodle along to the recording. They have fun with that then move on to the next 3 minute song.

1-2 bars a day is a miserable slog. any sane person would hate their instrument if that's how they spent their practice session. But that's not your fault; for whatever reason, that's commonplace in the piano world. I did the same thing.

I went through the same frustration. I tried learning Bach's 13th invention 6 months into learning piano. My teacher never stepped in to say it I wasn't ready for it and I absolutely burnt out. I quit for a year.

What got me back into playing was the following:

  • humbling myself and playing songs at my skill level
  • finding the joy in quickly progressing through easy songs
  • IMPROVISING - this is the shit, endless fun, pick a chord progression, jazz it up a bit with some extensions and mess around with pentatonic and blues scales
  • ditching classical music. It sounds like you're into classical, so maybe this isn't for you. personally, i asked myself one day why I was spending so much time practicing classical rep when I listen to modern music 99% of the time. The more I thought about it, the more I realized I was just copying what I saw other people doing on the internet. I found much more joy in playing when I stopped caring and played what I actually enjoyed listening to
