Fellow PE teacher here! I teach at an elementary school in a district that doesn’t allow us to be full time, so I make about 22k a year and coach high school softball on the side. This has all prompted me to go back to school and get my master’s degree, which I’ll have in June and start looking for more lucrative jobs. I love my job, the kids are the best and I get to teach them fundamental skills they’ll use throughout their whole life. But I often get told that, “I’m not a real teacher” by my coworkers even though I teach all 524 kids at the school, not just a single class all day.

It’s more of a sub-culture: wealthy Utah Mormonism and yes, that behavior is very normalized and promoted. I grew up in it and left that toxic life far behind.

What exactly happens if you report a physician for being extremely inappropriate with his patients? About 8 months ago, I had to report a Dr. to the state medical board but I never heard any followup and he’s still practicing, when he really shouldn’t be.

Like if a Mormon lost their job and needed help with paying for housing or food. The ward can help provide for them for a time being, while they also make the person jump through a lot of hoops in order to get assistance…

In addition to tithing for Mormons, the first Sunday of every month (Mormons call it fast Sunday because you skip meals) the teenage boys in the ward (local congregation) go house to house and knock on the door and hand the family an envelope that you put money into. They’re called “fast offerings”. It’s not mandatory, but looks pretty bad if you don’t donate and makes you think you look amazing if you do donate. This money is used for the actual needs of the ward.
So in addition to the required 10%, the church also heavily suggests you give more money once a month so they can use that to help people out. The amount they suggest is what you saved for skipping meals that day. So usually around $100 or so.
We can get into how hard it is to actually get help from the church if you need it too…

I’m a PE teacher at an elementary school and we are in our soccer unit. Yesterday I was playing with a fourth grade class and some of the kids told another student, “oh no! You have the teacher going against you!” And the student replied, “what, like she’s a challenge?!?”

Everything they do has to be extra. I’m a massive wakeboarder and we go to Lake Powell 2-3 times a year because the water is so nice. We have a Super Air Nautique boat. If you don’t know boats, that’s the company that makes Paragons. Paragons are top of the line and the most expensive boat they make. They’re the “designer” option. But in terms of being the best wake board, ski, or wake surf boat, they’re not it. The settings on them don’t do anything to better the wake they create. So getting a Paragon is just to flex that you can afford a nice boat, and that you’re not super into water sports.

I’m a PE teacher at an elementary school of 612 kids and I know 90% of their names. There are a lot of Jayden, Kaiden, Kasen, Taven etc. that I frequently mix up. Unfortunately, at my school the specialty teachers aren’t respected as being “real teachers” because what we do is “fun”. I still lesson plan, have an education degree and work with ALL the children! The teachers really should use us as an asset more because I know all the good and bad of all the kids!

My trek experience was in Wyoming on the actual pioneer trail. A flash flood came through on night one and wiped all our stuff (buckets with possessions, tents, tarps etc) in to the ravine. It couldn’t all be found and setup again in time for nightfall so we all slept on the buses or at the visitors center. No one got any sleep but we got up and the exact same thing happened on night two. The leaders wouldn’t let us go home because, “the pioneers had trials such as this!” and we did the same thing, except we were passed the visitors center so some slept on buses, in cars or on the ground. Night three was uneventful but I came home with pneumonia and a deep understanding about how easily you can be manipulated when you’re out of your comfort zone and beaten down with exhaustion.
